Trade Deadline: Things are Starting to Heat Up...for other teams
It looks like two big deals have already gone down today. First, the Pirates traded Jack Wilson and Ian Snell to the Seattle Mariners for Jeff Clement, Ronny Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock. It also has been rumored that the Pirates will be sending a "significant amount of cash" to the Mariners. As I said in the Farmers Only thread, the Pirates now have just $14 million in guaranteed salary for 2010. They've also traded 7 of their 9 2009 Opening Day starters, and Freddy Sanchez is on the blocks.
The other big deal is one where the Phillies have acquired Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to for minor leaguers Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson. I doubt this is quite like getting Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, and Brandon Phillips for Bartolo Colon, but this is still a very good haul for the Indians. I like this deal a lot for both teams actually since the Phillies now have an $8 million option on Lee for next season.
As for our Reds, I haven't heard a single peep on them yet today except that the Yankees are no longer interested in Bronson Arroyo. I'm back to being convinced that they won't make a deal before the deadline.
Feel free to make up your own rumors about the Reds here.

We get the pleasure of watching Cubs fans drool over an outfield of Alfonso Soriano, Willy T, and Milton Bradley on a daily basis in return…
I’d say that’s a pretty good haul.

Done
If the Reds don’t so something before the trade deadline, I’m done with the team. I’ve been a Reds fan for 24 years but my heart can’t stand more mediocrity. If the REDSMINORLEAGUES rumor that Castellini vetoed trades to move Arroyo over money is even partially true, then this team will be an also ran for the next decade.
There’s no way this team is a contender this year. Everyone not writing checks knows this.
Can't do it....just the Reds
I read every Reds blog that will write a post. I listen to the podcasts. Last year I even had my own Reds blog.
I can’t continue to invest, in good conscience, something that isn’t investing in itself. I’ll just be a baseball fan.

I think JP overplayed his hand
As good as Halladay is, there weren’t a lot of buyers if he wants to stick to non-AL East teams. The reported difference between what Toronto asked Philly and what Philly gave Cleveland is absurd. Then again, maybe ownership made JP take Halladay off the block due to fan backlash.

Specu-Fay-tion
If the Jays don’t move Halladay, does that make more likely that they’ll move Scott Rolen? The Reds are still interested in Rolen.
But why? Why don’t we ever hear the rationale for these moves? Is it a trade secret? No one seems to be able to press management to give even lip service to what they have in mind.
I know we’ve already hashed this out. I convinced myself this was an acceptable move last week, but with Edwin having a very successful return I don’t think it’s a stretch to think he could hit 25+ HRs next year and continue to be young, cheap and slightly above average. If Rolen gives you extra WAR on account of defense, there’s no way it will be worth the payroll bump.

The Indians have traded Mark DeRosa, Rafael Betancourt and, now, Cliff Lee. Who’s next? Executives tell ESPN.com’s Buster Olney that they fully expect Victor Martinez to be traded in the next 48 hours. In the words of one AL official:
“I don’t think they’d move one without moving the other.”
Martinez, 30, makes $4.5MM this year and will earn $7MM in 2010 if his team picks up his option. Most expect the switch-hitting catcher’s option to be picked up, regardless of which team he plays for. Indians GM Mark Shapiro told FOX Sports that he’s not under pressure to make deals for financial reasons, but some of Olney’s sources say the team faces pressure to cut payroll.
