2:28pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Blue Jays wouldn’t accept Jason Knapp as the centerpiece of a deal and instead insisted on obtaining Kyle Drabek. Sherman cites an executive who says the Red Sox have the best chance of obtaining Halladay now that the Phillies will acquire Lee.

I remember last year, the KGJ to White Sox deal was out of the blue. Maybe that will happen with Arroyo and we’ll get some surprising prospects out of that deal too

The Reds today announced the acquisition of OF Wladimir Balentien from the Mariners for RHP Robert Manuel.

Arroyo and Harang to Anaheim for Willits, Figgins, and the Rally Monkey. Call it “The Substance for Scrap” blockbuster.

If the Jays don’t move Halladay, does that make more likely that they’ll move Scott Rolen? The Reds are still interested in Rolen.

But why? Why don’t we ever hear the rationale for these moves? Is it a trade secret? No one seems to be able to press management to give even lip service to what they have in mind.

I know we’ve already hashed this out. I convinced myself this was an acceptable move last week, but with Edwin having a very successful return I don’t think it’s a stretch to think he could hit 25+ HRs next year and continue to be young, cheap and slightly above average. If Rolen gives you extra WAR on account of defense, there’s no way it will be worth the payroll bump.

2:04pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Giants are “definitely getting Freddy Sanchez.” The Pirates already traded Jack Wilson today, so they could conceviably lose their entire double play combo in one day.

2:14pm: Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are focused on their talks with the Blue Jays. However, Ryan Westmoreland and Casey Kelly are “off-limits” and the Red Sox want to keep Daniel Bard.

2:20pm: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Giants are in serious talks for Sanchez. The teams are discussing John Bowker, Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman.

They’ve gotten a King’s ransom in prospects the last two years and have made over their organizatiion to be more sabrmetrically-driven.

2:52pm: Kovacevic hears that the Giants are examining Sanchez within the hour. Is there a deal in place? Kovacevic hears ‘yes’ and ‘no.’

As many as eight teams are pursuing George Sherrill, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Two or three of the teams are actively engaging the O’s in trade talks.

The Angels are interested, as are the Dodgers, whose prospects appeal to Baltimore. Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Dodgers are focused on trading for Sherrill now that Cliff Lee’s off the market.

3:17pm: Langosch hears that Sanchez’s offer is for $20MM over three years.

Meanwhile, Kovacevic hears that the Pirates have absolutely “no deal” in place, though the Giants and Pirates have the framework for one.

The Indians have traded Mark DeRosa, Rafael Betancourt and, now, Cliff Lee. Who’s next? Executives tell ESPN.com’s Buster Olney that they fully expect Victor Martinez to be traded in the next 48 hours. In the words of one AL official:

“I don’t think they’d move one without moving the other.”

Martinez, 30, makes $4.5MM this year and will earn $7MM in 2010 if his team picks up his option. Most expect the switch-hitting catcher’s option to be picked up, regardless of which team he plays for. Indians GM Mark Shapiro told FOX Sports that he’s not under pressure to make deals for financial reasons, but some of Olney’s sources say the team faces pressure to cut payroll.

The Reds are considering sending Joe Morgan and Pete Rose to the Red Sox for Ted Williams. Rumor is that the Red Sox will have to kick in some cash.

3:31pm: Kovacevic hears that the Pirates turned down Sanchez’s offer. He proposed a deal that would have paid him $6MM next year, $6.5MM in 2011 and $7.5MM in 2012.

The Nats will likely consider dealing Joe Beimel, Willie Harris and Nick Johnson within the next two days, but Chico Harlan of the Washington Post says the team has incentive to keep Adam Dunn and hot-hitting Josh Willingham. Harlan hears that the Nats are asking a lot for either slugger and would happily keep both.

The market for Nick Johnson has worsened now that the Red Sox and Giants added first basemen. Earlier in the month, GM Mike Rizzo said he didn’t anticipate a particularly active trade deadline.

4:01pm: Rosenthal and Morosi report that the Rays are no longer pursuing Halladay. Instead, they’ll look for bullpen help, just a day after they considered trading relievers away.

The Yankees acquired minor league righty Jason Hirsh from the Rockies, according to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times. Hirsh, 27, started 19 games for the 2007 NL Champion Rockies, but hasn’t made an appearance in the majors so far this season. He’s allowed 130 hits and 35 walks in just over 101 innings at Triple A, striking out 59.

It’s a depth move for the Yankees and it’s unclear what they gave up to obtain Hirsh.

The Yankees also released veteran pitcher Brett Tomko, according to Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger. The Yankees designated the righty for assignment earlier in the month.

4:43pm: Kovacevic reports that the Giants’ doctors found no major problems with Sanchez’s knee and consider him day-to-day.
