I would hate to play Walt in poker
What the hell is he going to do? Buy, Sell, or play 3 infielders in the outfield. I am convinced no one has a damn clue for one reason. Castellini. He is so sick of losing so much that he might add Rolen or Pierre just to have a shot at .500. One thing is absolutely for sure, Walt is pretty good at not tipping his hand. We are the only team this far back in the standings there is even a question whether we are buyers or sellers. I think that is impressive, although I would be alot more impressed if we had a winning team on the field.
Facts are facts, this is not our year. If you would have told the RR crew that Volquez, Bruce, Encarnacion, Votto, Gonzalez, Owings, and Dickerson would spend time on the DL...and EV, JB, EE, and JV would be gone for over a month.....we would have said come on Bryce Harper the next Cincinnati Red! That being said, the interesting thing about Bob's crazy and Walt's poker face is that this does give him room for negotiation with all party's (buyers and sellers).
I can see a situation in which the Reds get Pierre and Rolen(both with cash), and still be in great financial shape for 2010. Its all about how much money is exchanged and if it turns out to be a cheap add for the future. It really comes down to alot of tough decisions. Trading Cordero, Trading Arroyo(maybe with $), Trading Harang (maybe with $) and of course the prospects. Personally I think prospects are currently overrated, but that's my opinion.
One thing I am absolutely certain about.... Walt is a good poker player, and he is the type of person I want as GM. The type of talent he acquires, and means of which he obtains it will always be debatable (saber vs. traditional, etc.)....but I want this kind of negotiator running the show. (example everyone knew Krivsky wanted to trade Dunn and Griffey every fucking year, but he gt shit offers because he didn't play his hand correctly)
Thoughts on our current situation as sure fire losers:
1. Thank you Joey Votto for showing some god damn heart and getting kicked out tonight. As a former coach of high school sports, I think it is absolutely essential to know when as a coach you need to motivate the team and get yourself kicked the fuck out of the game. A confident good coach knows that he hired good/loyal assistants that will make calls 90% the as same as yours, so when the ump/ref makes a shitty/borderline/game changing call its time to man up have a little fun. I think its a little ridiculous that Dusty is such a fucking hippie when is comes to arguing calls, AND ITS THE COACHES FUCKING JOB TO MAKE SURE HE GETS KICKED OUT BEFORE THE PLAYER! JOEY VOTTO WINS GAMES NOT DUSTY FUCKING BAKER!
2. There is no way we are making the playoffs. Therefore every deal must make us better for next year. And yes I like Scott Rolen for 2010.
3. Walt is alot smarter than we all think for not getting Stubbs on the 25-man until rosters expand. This keeps another option year, which makes him more tradable(especially if you have concerns), and lets him develop more. And besides what's another month, we are still going to lose.
4. This is the worst Reds offense I have ever seen in my lifetime.
Peace out I am going to bed, later.

How old are you?
This is not nearly as bad as some of the teams I’ve seen the Reds put on the field.
The late ’50s blew chinks as did the early ’80s
Bob Boone Makes Dusty Baker look like a genius…you prolly don’t remember players like Don Blasingame or Eddie kasko or Chico Ruiz..let alone the naleless wonders that have passed through the Red’s clubhouse doors in most of the ’80s and 90s.
Right now we got a bit of offense with Votto, BP and Gomes…EdE has the fear of Rolen in him so he’s starting to hit. Hanigan can fucking hit. Wily’s picking up some hits, it is looking like an offensive contagion is about to spread through this team…Nix will get in on it and maybe even Agon (although I hope he gets his butt traded)…
Anyway I’d love toplay poker with Walt. He’s old and in the way now..hell he’s older than I am…Bob Castellini is in over his head – but don’t count that nasty fucker out…he got the city to buy his land for the stadium, got the city to build his stadium and has a lot of his money on the line…Bob just fuckin’ hates to lose…He has played the game according to the accepted ‘way to win at pro-baseball’….he’ll start jumping the traces pretty soon..in fact he may be behind the not bringing up anybody except Sutton and Manuel..becuase he is not a dumbass..he can’t help but see the stats…he’s businessman and businessmen exist or die wiith the correct use of statistical information regarding their companies…
This game ain’t over…I have more faith in Bob than I do Walt.

The offense is horrible, and I would bet is it arguably the worst. I think we are just a little more optimistic about their production because they are young.
Dusty’s not that bad, (besides the sub 0.300 OBP hitting 1 & 2) but I just think he’s too much of a pacifist sometimes.
I would actually love to play him in poker, I just think I would lose…..And I would bet most other people would also.

Dusty is exactly the kind of person you want to play in poker.
He never shuts up telling you about all of his wonderful life experiences and how you can never expect the unexpected. All the while he’s.. well, no. Wait. That’s it. That’s all he does.

Bob Bafoone has to be the worst manager I have ever seen. Jerry Narron even lookes like Einstein compared to him.

sympathize with your points but
Rolen is a marginal upgrade over Ed E at 3rd. Take that money and invest and greater positions of need (LF, SS)

yes
the problem with the Rolen deal is that there is no way the Blue Jays do it without the Reds taking on more salary. And it seems silly to spend money on 3B when there are much bigger needs around the diamond. Now if they clear out Arroyo’s salary, then maybe it will make a little more sense.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
But whom?
What SS is out there who makes a salary in the range of Rolen? There are only a handful of SS’s worthy of spending money on, and they are generally untouchable to their current GM’s. MLB is currently full of underwhelming, overpaid veterans or young, pre-arb studs who won’t get traded.
LF, on the other hand, is where we should put some $$, but which FA fits our need? Not really anyone, except maybe Jonny Gomes….

He switch hits. He has some power. He plays shortstop AND left field.
And he’s cheap.

He doesn't wear his socks high enough
and he’s just trade fodder for relief pitching. The Reds have established this already.
by Brian B on Jul 28, 2009 1:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think you can pick up a good shorstop for $6M a year
which is the difference between Rolen and EdE.
If the market is much like it was last season, I think you might get the top free agent shortstops (Scutaro and Tejada?) for that much. I think the Reds could even go heavy on defense at SS for relatively cheap and take a shot at John McDonald, or maybe Jack Wilson, though something about Wilson makes me think that he thinks he is worth more than the average shortstop. If it’s an all defense shortstop though, they can’t overspend on him because they will definitely need to get a big bat somewhere else in the lineup.
as for outfield help, if they want to spend some money, there are some older options (Vlad, Abreu, Magglio, Randy Winn, Matsui), or some younger options (Holliday, Bay) or they could take a chance on someone like Xavier Nady, who has been hurt. Ultimately, though, I bet they sign Rick Ankiel to more money than he’s worth.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Rolen can still pick it, no?
I think you can hide a worse fielding SS between Rolen and Phillips in a way you can’t between EE and Phillips. So maybe that is part of the logic.
I can see the Reds getting an Auriliesque (c. 2005/6) SS if they get Rolen. I would actually be very ok with picking up Rolen (contract is only through 2010) and someone like Swisher.
The real key for the team, in my view, is how they solve the SS position. I think there are a few different ways to solve it.
Oh, and not relying on Gomes for 600 PA of 125+ OPS next year.
And getting more out of the pitching staff somehow.
by Cy Schourek on Jul 28, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I have a feeling, though I haven't researched it, that it is easier to find a slick fielding/no bat SS
than a good hitting/no fielding shortstop. Hell, they could do it with Zach Cozart right now probably. The problem is that the shortstop needs to truly be good defensively and not just have a good reputation like Sea bass.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
I think the Reds need the latter much more than the former, though
they need bats, and I think they could hide an SS who isn’t much of a fielder (if and only if they get Rolen), as long as that SS could hit 20ish homers.
The question, to me, is who.
I think shortstop is a position where you always sacrifice bat over glove
I agree that they need a bat, but I’d rather try to hide bad defense on the corners than up the middle.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
I would agree with you 90% of the time
but think that this could be a time I don’t. The Reds could just trade for Hanley instead of Rolen and make this easy on both of us.
oh sure, if they could get a "best bat in the lineup" to play shortstop
then I’m all for it, regardless of defense.

Are you serious...
In saying that the Reds should get Juan Pierre in the offseason?
They already have him. He’s that guy in center that threw out two guys last night.
Although I think Pierre’s defense may not be as good.

Maybe if the money's right
For example if you did a contract swap with Arroyo and Taveras.
Arroyo – 2010 – $11 mil, 2011 $2 mil buyout
Taveras – 2010 $4 mil
$17 mil total
Juan Pierre – 2010 $10 mil, 2011 $8.5 mil
$18.5 mil total
And have the dodgers throw in some cash. I would make that deal.

Pierre is a much better player than Taveras
career OBP of 0.350

He may be slightly better, but he isn't $12.5 million better
Which is the difference in salary between the two for the next two years.

Really?
Taveras has a career OBP of 0.324. Wow. A whole 0.026 of difference.
So is Juan Pierre a “much better” player than Taveras? I would say that Jayson Werth is a “much better” player than Taveras. Juan Pierre is a “marginally better” player than Taveras, offensively.
With a salary difference of about $12.5 million, that means you would be paying approximately $480,000 for each point of OBP difference, and I think Taveras is the marginally better defender of the two.

The way I read Walt
He’s selling, but also wants to sell tickets. Bronson could go as could Aaron. I don’t see the Rolen deal happening without other player and money movement.
yeah, I subscribe to the idea that they are playing dumb and pretending to still want to win this year
so they can keep their price up on the trade market and convince fans to keep buying tickets.

Pete, I don't think these guys are trying too hard to sell tickets
Bob and Walt know that winning is what is going to really sell tickets.
I’m sure there’s some moderate promotional BS going on but nobody, esp. the fans are buying it.

Should Baker be fired?
Let’s start a poll to see how many fans believe Baker should be fired for total incompetency, for his total lack of understanding of how to use pitchers, for not preparing his players to play the game, for making dummit comments, ……………………….
If Baker can do all of these, we might as well get the equipment manager to run the team and pay a lot less?
What about any of the co(ckro)aches that Baker appointed to his staff? Why should any of them be retained? Hitting – team averages dropped with these fungo bats; Pitching – team ERA is rising fast. Probably only one pitcher (Bronson) with double digit wins this year, the least for any team in the majors in history. Base running (1st base/3rd base) – just check how many players get picked off and got caught stealing. What do we need these coaches at the corners for? Execution – just check if the Reds are leading the majors in errors and have the least double plays. How about the high LOBs? ……….
