Farmers Only: Maloney got rocked, good pitching in Sarasota and Billings, and a surprising retirement
- Matt Maloney got lit up as Louisville lost to Syracuse 8-5. Matty gave up 8 runs in 4 innings of work. Ramon Ramirez was good in relief, only giving up 1 hit in 3 innings, and Logan Ondrusek put up a perfect inning in his AAA debut. Darnell McDonald was 3-for-5 to lead the offense, and a Kevin Barker grand slam almost brought the guys back. For the guys who have recently gotten some callup talk, Drew Stubbs was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Chris Heisey had the night off. Up next: Louisville takes on Toledo at 7:05. No starter listed. Ben Jukich is next in line, but if that changes, you'll be the first to know.
- Carolina got blanked by Chattanooga 3-0. Lee Tabor gave up 2 runs in 5 innings, and Ramon Geronimo and Enerio Del Rosario both pitched scorless relief outings. Carson Kainer had two of the Mudcats 5 hits. Up next: Matt Klinker takes on 'Nooga at 7:15.
- Sarasota shut out Daytona 1-0, behind an awesome start by Luis Montano. Montano gave up 6 hits in 8 shutout innings, and Mace Thurman pitched a perfect 9th for his 4th save. Devin Mesoraco drove in the S-Reds only run with one of his two hits, and Dave Sappelt had two hits as well. Up next: Zach Ward takes on Daytona at 7.
- Dayton tied their game in the 9th, but gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to lose to Kane County 3-2. Josh Fellhauer was 3-for-5 with a HR, and Oscar Castro started the game, giving up 2 runs in 5 innings while walking 5. Up next: Dayton takes on Peoria at 7, with no starter listed.
- Billings held off a Great Falls rally in the 9th to win 4-3. Shea Snowden had a great start, pitching 6 shutout innings while striking out 7 hitters. Yorman Rodriguez continued his tear, going 2-for-4 with a HR. Up next: Luca Panerati takes on Great Falls at 9:05.
- Pitching was the theme for the GCL Reds as they won against the GCL Rays 8-1. Alexander Smit started the game on a rehab assignment and pitched 3 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. Not to be outdone, the next pitcher, Mitchell Clarke, pitched 3 hitless innings too, striking out 4 and walking 1. Marcos Molina took the no-no into the 8th, before he gave up a hit and promptly induced a double play. Theodis Bowe continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-5 with his 14th SB in 19 games. Cristobal Rodriguez went 3-for-4, and Billy Hamilton and Henry Rodriguez went 2-for-4. Up next: GCL Reds take on the GCL Orioles at noon.
- Roster Moves: As mentioned in the FanShots, Sarasota starting pitcher Rafael Gonzalez was placed on the Voluntary Retired List. No word as to why yet, other than his recent struggles in the FSL.

Rafael Gonzalez
That is kind of surprising. He’s only 23. I suppose spending six years in pro baseball and still struggling in A-ball is a bit demoralizing, but still…it’s not a bad job, in a lousy economy.

Minors Complaint
It has irritated me for quite a while that Rookie League, and even some A teams, do not post photos of their players on the teams websites. I like to be able to put a players name and stats with a face. Given the fact that it has become so easy to take and post photos digitally, I don’t think this is too much to ask. Hell, even most high school teams post photos of their players these days. Goddammit, I’d like to know what Mariekson Gregorius looks like without having to Google him.

I'd like to see wider distribution of player photos in general
Every year, they have “photo day,” when they take photos of the players for promotional and baseball card purposes. A few of those those photos are released to various media outlets, a few appear on baseball cards, a few become the players’ Gameday photos. And the rest fall into a black hole, never to be seen again.
The ones that are released to the media are so random. Two years ago, only three Reds players got their photo day portraits posted to Yahoo/AP. Arroyo, Milton, and Lightenberg.

yes
but those weren’t official portraits. those were photos taken by the players themselves, given access to one of the enquirer’s photographer’s gear.

Agree with you wholeheartedly there
It’s up to the individual teams to take the pictures, and from there, MiLB.com to post them. Some teams, like Billings, do a good job of getting them up. The GCL Team, not so much. Dayton had theirs up at the beginning of the year, but the new players on the team don’t have them.

If I may provide some context....
Things like taking photos are not handled by the parent club’s personnel, nor do they care about it. GCL is a separate case as it is strictly a player development league. You won’t find any more than 5 or 10 “fans”, tops, and there’s no promotions, probably no actual stadium, no concessions, nothing. It’s run strictly by the major league organization and the only personnel there are the ones necessary for business and player development.
At the higher levels, the MLB club provides the players and equipment while the business front office, each one separate from the MLB club, provide uniforms, concessions, gameday staff, promotions, etc. It is these people — the promo directors and minor league front offices — would take it on themselves to take the photos. Some teams don’t want to pay a photographer to come in and take mug shots because it’s simply not in the budget. Some teams, my employer included, just buy a camera and take them themselves to post to the website and send to MiLB. So if your players don’t have mugshots, you might try writing the front office of the respective club and requesting them. If you’re close by, you might even offer to do them for free or extremely cheap and I bet they’d be thrilled with the offer. It’s not a Reds thing, but the independent front offices of each minor league club.
The exception is GCL, those are probably never going to get taken unless they’re in spring camp.
And this explanation has gone on too long already.
unless front office strays from their M.O.,
i think it’s pretty much a lock that Old McDonald is first in line if we call up an OF. too bad we don’t have NoHo—i was a big Hopper fan.
we have to make a roster move to make room for him. we can move Richar or Lincoln to the 60-day and option Rosie or Sutton—probably Sutton.
I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rosie go back down
Dude can’t hit his way out of a paper bag right now.

To be fair
Being inside a paper bag makes it hard to see what kind of pitch is coming at you, or if there is even a pitch for that matter.

yeah, he may never succeed up here too.
I wouldn’t be surprised either but I was just thinking about versatility and I wasn’t sure of Sutton’s ability to play 1B.
I think Sutton
can play first (to a limited degree) and outfield. But I am not 100% on that
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.
They mentioned that on the telecast last night
In the Baseball Cube’s fielding stats, he’s only played 2 games at 1B up through 2008 and none in the outfield. As far as this year goes, I don’t recall him playing anywhere other than 2B, SS, or 3B in his games in Louisville. That being said, I’m sure with his skill set, he’s capable of playing the outfield or 1B, but expect to see some dumb mistakes since he hasn’t done it before.

He's played 6 games at 1B in Louisville this year, no games in the OF (BBRef.com)

Ok
So Thom calling Sutton the 4th OF is pretty much ridiculous then, right?

For anyone
The fact that anyone, in the media or not, is looking at Drew Sutton as the 4th outfielder is kind of ridiculous. He hasn’t played an inning there in pro ball.

He came over after spring training was already over
