Frustrating.

It's a high school (usually softball) strategy.
If a team is good you can pull it off. I have no issues with it in a close game like this. Especially when the team is so awful on offense.

I guess it's the same net effect to bunting
but this team is pretty inept on the basepaths.
You’re better off risking an out sending Joey to second – and thus getting out of DP danger – than guaranteeing one out by having one of them get nailed.

He shouldn't?
Two weeks ago when it was Pujols v Weathers, Dusty was beaten up for throwing Weathers. The next time, Masset got Pujols out. So, now the owner of a 2+ ERA shouldn’t pitch?
I agree, the reasoning behind bringing Masset in is just fine.
It’s Masset’s fault for throwing a meatball down broadway and letting Manny crank it to South America.

If you're going to take out Arroyo
Masset was the right choice. He’s been nails against righties.
The real story here is the same one since the beginning of the year – incredibly weak offense compounded by bad lineup construction, roster management, plate approach and baserunning mistakes. Basically, the coaching talent taking already-meager raw materials and sticking them into an incinerator.

If they are contending, and they want the prospect to be eligible for post-season play.
I don’t think the Reds have to worry about that, unfortunately.
They may also do that if it’s not a particularly good prospect. Then they don’t care about his options, or his arb clock.

We may be further away than we realized. Hanigan’s coming back to earth. There’s basically no outfield, with Bruce both lost and injured and Gomes unable to get a fulltime trial run. I’ve got 1B, 2B and 3B (probably) as the only certainties for production next year. That’s not getting fixed for 2010.

Votto is good, really good. And just as good looking in HD. That’s about it, sorry, I thought I had more uplifting material. However, for me that’s just about good enough to keep watching.
The other bright spot, I will provide typos on a consistent basis and the RR peanut gallery will provide the jokes. This should provde enterainment if the game gets really bad ;) Don’t even think I’ll start using “preview”
G’night all
Too bad about Bronson's ERA
He pitched great and has done so for the past couple starts. He got totally boned by a bloop single and an ill-advised fastball that someone else threw. The only silver lining tonight is that our boy can still pitch.
This team really defines low rent. The two free agents Walt sprung for who have any value are a reliever and part-time outfielder. That says it all. Heavy reliance on the coincidental emergence of minor league talent unpredictable value / a misguided, patchwork free agent strategy / an ineffectual coaching staff – these things show no signs of abating so neither does the parade of losing seasons.
Fuck you, Reds, for being so negligent with millions of dollars. You’re lucky I’m still clinging to fond memories of the early 90s stowed away in my brain somewhere.

Goes on to cite the return of Alex Gonzalez as a potential
catalyst for a “run.”
That Fay post was a pretty impressive charade. I know Walt’s the chief propagandist, but he’s out of his ever-loving mind to expect anyone that’s followed the team to swallow even an ounce of that tripe. We all know what the problem is. Getting A-Gon back, who will probably perform worse than Cherry offensively and Volquez – who will simply paper over the crappiness of Owings and Bailey – should do little to nothing.
Barf.

I think he was telling the truth
when he said “Nothing’s changed.”
I don’t think Jocketty ever really meant to make a run of it this year. His plan was always for next year.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Which only heightens the irony
Mentioning Gonzalez as a potential savior for the season is almost an explicit wink to fans that we’re playing for 2010. Gonzalez is going off the books and that payroll room better help build an 85+ win season.

The Reds
are just not a good team. USA Today blames injuries:
•What’s gone wrong: The Reds, who were tied for first place in the National League Central in mid-May, are in a full-fledged free fall. They entered Tuesday having lost 21 of 34 games since June 10 and were closer to the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates than to the first-place St. Louis Cardinals.
They have been smacked hard with injuries. Their projected opening-day lineup has played in 10 games, and every member of the starting infield except for second baseman Brandon Phillips has been on the disabled list. As a result, they have been outscored by 52 runs, more than twice the margin of any other NL Central team. Ace Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo combined for one win in June. Edinson Volquez, who won 17 games last year, went on the disabled list June 2 with elbow tendinitis and has won four games. And No. 5 starter Micah Owings (6-10, 5.33 ERA) has been erratic.
•What they need: A power-hitting outfielder, and that was before the Reds lost Jay Bruce to a broken right wrist that could sideline him until September. They also need first baseman Joey Votto to stay in the lineup. The Reds were 26-21 before Votto went on the disabled list in late May with stress-related issues he said resulted from death of his father last August. Now they rank 13th in the NL in batting average (.249), with Votto the only regular above .300.
They think the Reds still have a chance, albeit a small one. But looking at their summary…I don’t. I really hadn’t realized how bad it was.
We knew before the season started that the Reds would have be pretty lucky to be a contender this year. Instead, they’ve been unlucky. With injuries in particular. With so many starters spending time on the DL, including Voltron, Votto and Bruce…they really didn’t have a chance.

IF
Volquez, Votto and Encarnacion hadn’t gone on the DL and Bruce hadn’t gotten completely confused and then gotten injured, I think the team could be above .500 right now and in the race. They still wouldn’t have the talent necessary to sustain it. Volquez only pitches every fifth day and you know what you’re getting out of EdE and this year’s model of Jay Bruce – nothing that would push things over the top.
The injuries are a convenient crutch for management to explain away the season.

As I said
I don’t think Jocketty ever planned to contend this year.
However, I don’t think he expected the team to be this bad, either.
The Reds really have been been walloped by injuries. It’s not just Volquez, Votto, EE, and Bruce (though that’s bad enough). A-Gon, Hernandez, Bray, Lincoln…the list goes on. Even Louisville hasn’t been spared. Daryl Thompson, Wilkin Castillo, etc.
In any case, my point wasn’t to blame anyone. I’m just saying…the Reds have no chance this season, and should be setting up for next year, not worrying about winning now.

Oh, and before I go
Fuck you, Reds. You’re very quickly becoming the Bengals with a better PR machine.
