Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Excuses and Half Truths and Fortified Wine: Reds lose in faith-questioning fashion

Lord, I'm discouraged.

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Rafael Furcal.  At press time he was 3-5 with a homer, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.

Key Plays

  • The Reds did not hit.  They did not pitch.  They did not field.
  • The Dodgers did.

Other Notes

  • Homer Bailey hit Manny Ramirez in the hand, causing him to leave the game.  Manny went to have it examined, and it's possible that he'll miss some time.  Kudos then to Homer for fulfilling the wish of all the morally outraged journalists out there who were furious that Manny only missed fifty games.
  • Jonny Gomes hit a home run.  It was one of only two hits for the Reds (through 7).
  • Ryan Hanigan is 1-13.
  • Joey Votto came up to bat three times with two outs and the bases empty.

  • top of the 7th 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 RHE
    Cincinnati Reds 0 1 0 0 0 0     1 2 2
    Los Angeles Dodgers 2 2 5 0 3 0       12 12 0

I can see you're not going to agree with me, so let's move on. - Bill Maher

Game ended 12 - 3 with Drew Sutton getting his first MLB hit and RBI

and Votto hitting a homer.

I couldn’t participate in tonight’s game thread…but I must say I was sorely saddened by Homer’s showing.

The team played even more lacklusterly than in last night’s debacle.

There is something amiss with this Team, I guess it is just plain and simple a lack of enough talent to susstain even a .500 season.

They remain 5.5 games behind St. louis, but the way they are plating it might as well be 15.5 GB.

I picked them to finish last in the RR predictions

Looks like they’re going to make a run at it.

Ugh

Homer Bailey was gawd-awful.

2.2 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, O K, 1 HR

Plus two wild pitches and a HBP.

I think Micah Owings’ job is safe.

Homer

I thought he made some good pitches early and got squeezed into 3-ball hitter’s counts. The the wheels clearly fell off when he was trying to do too much.

If he could only get his breaking pitches in the strike zone, we’d have something.

agreed

he did make some really nice pitches but that home plate umpire had a strike zone the size of a pizza box. seems like it messed with his head so he grooved a lot of pitches down broadway. he’s still quite a ways away from putting it all together—which is fine cuz he’s so young…

Yeah it was ugly again

it’s really a bummer too. How can he go from pitching like he did to the Phillies, one oft he most potent offensive teams we’ve face, to this?

That last sentence is the most true and depressing thing I have read

But, I guess just like Crash said:

Look, Nuke, these big league hitters are going to light you up like a pinball machine for awhile. Don’t worry about it. You be cocky and arrogant even when you’re getting beat. That’s the secret. You gotta play this game with fear and arrogance.

I hope Homer stays cocky, but he cannot throw his stuff at 3-2. He has to set his very straight fastball up with his off-speed stuff and then attack the zone with fastballs. Last night, his curveball was up and he stopped throwing it, making him a fastball/baby splitter pitcher. Not a recipe for success, unless your fastball dances.

that makes sense

and Homer seems like he has enough attitude and confidence, but it seems lacking sometimes. When I watch him pitch, he looks nervous before every toss. He takes a deep breath before each one. When you read about his hunting and such, you’d think he’d be really assertive up there. I hope he comes around. Unfortunately, I do’t see that happening for a while.

Ouch

Can someone explain to me why Jacoby has a job? Our guys consistantly lack a plate strategy every at bat.

Won’t happen, but replacing this staff with the staff in Louisville… Rick sweet can coach, Ted power produces pitchers and also actually shaves and wears a uniform…

d'oh!

Dustbrain: "They’ve got a good lineup over there and they were tattooing some balls pretty good. “You know you’ve got a good lineup when your eighth hitter’s hitting .320-something. I don’t know If I’ve seen that ever.”

I just wanted to add my standard "hit em'" line for teh day

Wolf went straighter after Gomes, on the foot, after Manny was hit. The LA article I read said soemthing like “that’s baseball”. Last week, though, Bronson accidentally hit Ryan Braun on the hand, actually I think he hit two batters, and there was no retaliation that I ca recall. Not saying there is anything wrong with retaliation, but it is not necessarily standard procedure.

Should be for the Reds. They need to go after somebody tonight!
