It's time to trade Harang!
It's time to trade Aaron Harang. Harang is 5-10 and I think he would happier somewhere else. He doesn't get much run support (one of the worst in baseball). Possibly Boston, the Yankees, or the Angels would give the Reds some young quality talent. And when July 31 rolls around and we're not in a better position, they should look into trading Bronson Arroyo as well. There's not alot of pitchers available this year, the Reds might get really good deals for them.

I think we should move Harang as well.
And not because he doesn’t get run support and it makes him sad. I’d trade him because he’s become an incredibly hittable pitcher who gives up a lot of homers. He’s an innings eater, but he’s no longer the top level pitcher we thought we had and I’d be surprised to see him put up an ERA under 4.00 this season or in the future, unless there’s an injury or mechanical problem caused by his injuries last year. He’s not the same pitcher he was a couple years ago, and while he still has value to the Reds, moving him for two or three good prospects and getting rid of his salary may be in the team’s best interest.

Yes, but
everything you just said means his value will be at an all time low right now, so I doubt we’d get 2-3 good prospects. Probably more like 1 good and 2 marginal prospects. And if you are talking about a salary dump, Arroyo should go first because he makes basically the same as Harang.
Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?

I think this is silly
If he had 3 or 4 years left on his contract, I think this would make sense, but he only has one guaranteed year left plus a $2M buyout in 2011. And the idea that he should be traded because he’s not as good as he was is foolish. He’s still a very good pitcher, one of the two best on the Reds. He hasn’t been helped hardly at all by the improved defense this year – he’s 5th from the bottom in DER for starters this season. The only number that I see that really concerns me is his line drive rate, but there is a margin of error in there (I recently read where soft liners have a tendency to be labeled LD if they fall in for a hit and FB if they are caught). Sure, his K-rate is down, but not so dramatically that I’d be freaking out and his walk rate is still excellent.
I just can’t see the Reds getting anybody for Harang that will dramatically help their chances next season, especially since with Harang gone, your starting rotation will be Cueto, Volquez, Bailey, Owings(?), Arroyo (?), and Maloney (?). I have very little confidence in that rotation taking this team to the playoffs.

Agreed
This team is not going to make the playoffs this year but they’re not that far off and they could have a team built for some long-term success with a few good moves this year.
Trading Harang should be one of those moves. He’s past his peak and he still has legitimate value. Exactly the time to trade a player if you’re not contending. He could bring back a piece or two that would help the next good Reds team.

right now, out for me would probably just be turning into a normal fan
that is, I’ll go to a couple of games, read the occasional news story, etc. I’m giving them until next season. After that, I’m no longer going to try to make their shit sandwich interesting. I’ve got better things to do with my time (I hope).

I couldn't really fault you if you left your mom's basement after next season.
But let’s says the Reds finish with only 75-80 this year and then again in 2010.
Now it’s 2011.. Dusty’s gone. Votto, Bruce, Alonso, Francisco, Phillips, Volquez, Bailey and Cueto are still here. We’ve traded some veteran pitching for some other exciting young players. And Walt is filling in the blanks for a run in 2012 and 2013.
It’s unfortunate that Harang and Cordero will have amounted to not much more than the pitching versions of Griffey and Dunn and it’s unfortunate that it will have taken such a long long long long time to get there but I like the 2011 (as described above) more than any Reds team I’ve seen in the new milllenium.
Oswalt will be gone, the Cubs will be in shambles and Votto will be >/= Pujols.
Hang in there, kiddo.

nope
there will be no hanging in there. I’ve been using the same logic you just posted since 2003. It basically amounts to crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. They have until next season or I will simply become Joe Average fan, complete with the mouth-breathing.

Re: "since 2003"
You haven’t had an opportunity to root for that much legitimate young (mostly home-grown) talent since 2003. (And even further back.)
You may not feel like rooting for them in 2011 but it won’t be because they’ll be a bunch of Ryan Freels and Matt Belisles out there.
by Fat Vegas Alan on Jul 21, 2009 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope
it’ll be because I’m tired of waiting. Eventually you have to shit or get off the pot. This season, despite the fact that I really didn’t expect much from them anyway, has made me realize that I’m tired of going through this every summer. I don’t want progress next year, I want results.
I know my saying this does nothing to affect what the Reds will actually do, but this season is the first year that I’ve been truly frustrated with watching the team. In the past, I’ve always let hope for the future ease my pain, but I’m ready for the future to be now. And I really hope that they do put a winner on the field. I don’t want to stop following the team closely. I usually enjoy it, but this year has been a drag.

I hear ya.
This team has good young talent and I’ve had some fun rooting for them to get to either 81 or 82 wins. (“Maaaaybe 85” I thought when the swept the ‘Stros back in May) But when it’s 645pm and you know the game is about to start with one of Willy’s sprinty groundouts it’s been really easy to just take the dog for a nice long walk on these mild summer nights.
And yeah, the Reds need support but no more than preschoolers need help learning to swim and ride bikes.

You don't want to rely on me loving the Reds forever and ever.
I was at Sunday’s game with the wife and while realizing that I didn’t really miss the knee-shaking cheesecaking “dance team” I did find fault with the Reds (and every MLB team, really) for never letting anybody but the biggest thickest hoss shoot free stuff into the crowd. “My kingdom for a team progressive enough to put the t-shirt cannon in the hands of a PYT!” (So you see, I’m probably just as likely to abandon the Reds as our boy in the basement.)
And even if the team’s every move did meet with my approval, ya’ll know I’m so unreliable that I might not even stick around long enough to

i don't know alan
in 2007 I was really excited because they had extended Harang and Arroyo, and I figured Bailey, Cueto, Votto, Bruce, would fill in nicely around Dunn, Phillips, EdE, and this team would be ready to rock and roll in 2009. I didn’t bank of spending wayyyyyyyyyy to much money on a closer, and Willy Taveras blocking out Stubbs, etc. Imagine if the Reds could have had Cordero’s money available to take on a bat.

by justin007000 on Jul 21, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But then Weathers would be our closer.
Also, your ‘09 Reds don’t have that much of Cordero’s money left to spend on another bat because you extended Dunn.
Anyway, I’m not really saying that you shouldn’t have been excited for ‘09 and ’10. Just that more exciting possibilities lay ahead. By the end of next season’s firesale, the Reds will truly be a hungry small-market team with a shrewd GM, a new manager handpicked by said shrewd GM, some (lots of?) money to spend, very few (if any) bloated upside-down contracts and a whole lot of young talent.
I realize that’s not good enough for many fans (and again- I’m not finding fault with fans ready to walk) but I’m telling myself that I’d rather spend my time watching and thinking optimistically about my lean mean hypothetical Red machine than doing what we’re doing here in late July ’08… hoping that our sad panda ace has another 300 innings left in his arm and praying that an on-again-off-again Arroyo can keep us hanging around .500 until August.

I'm ready to trade Harang and Arroyo
It’s not that they’re bad. They are typical #3, o 4 or 5 pitchers. But this club cannot afford to pay that much for these guys when we’re losing this badly.
And I don’t want to trade Harang because he gets no run support. But if he does get traded, I will be happy for him if he does get some run support.
by Dude Rock on Jul 21, 2009 8:37 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Run Support
The idea of trading a pitcher because he lacks run support is asinine. Wouldn’t it make more sense to trade the players who attempt to bat in and score those runs? And at that rate we should trade Arroyo and Cueto as well because all three are in the bottom ten in the NL in run support.
But I agree with Slyde. Unless you could get someone to insert into your rotation immediately (which would basically be a 1-for-1, which I wouldn’t do anyway), then you can’t do it.

I had a few years there where I just got too frustrated to care any more…during the mid-‘80s…Yawnsville…but I missed it and I came back…now i don’t invest so much of myself in the Reds but just enjoy the games and the comraddery (?) – I enjoy it all so much more now then i did back then

How does trading Harang improve the team?
Harang has made 20 starts this season. In 14 of them he has allowed 3 or fewer runs. In fact, in those 14 starts he is 5-4 and is averaging 6+2/3IP, 6H, 2.21ERA, 6K, 2BB. He eats innings and anchors the staff.
Who is going to give the Reds those 14 quality starts (to this point) next year? I promise you it’s not Homer Bailey, I guarantee it’s not anyone on the farm, and there is NO CHANCE that the Reds could pay or attract a free agent starter of Harang’s quality in the off season.
Trading Harang would be terribly misguided.
