Game 87 Thread 2

Aaron Harang is struggling trying to do it all himself.  The offense, predictably, has done nothing.

Welsh, Harang hasn't disappeared for 6 weeks

The Reds are 4-4 since his last start. It’s just coincidental that he hasn’t gotten the win in any of those games.

When is it going to be enough for Willy Taveras?

If he plays a single game for this team next year, I’m out until the Reds are under new management. I can’t invest my time in this bullshit if this is the best the team can muster for 2 years in CF.

And at this level of shittiness offensively and defensively. I don’t care what his UZR says, he’s been shit in the outfield.

What's your point?

He sucks. He runs bad routes, compensated with speed and now that his speed is failing him – as a function of SBs and fly ball plays – he really, really, really sucks.

by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Jul 12, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is that it's easy to jump on a guy hitting 200

Nobody was criticizing him or the signing when he was hitting 300 and playing, in my opinion, good defense. If you really thought he was poor defensively back then, good for you. I just sense revisionist history.

by ken on Jul 12, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

As we discussed earlier

He was taking bad breaks, but generally able to run things down at that point. He has lost a bit of that speed now, but he continues to have horrible reads.

I think the umpire was actually pretty patient. He told Joey to get in the dugout repeatedly, and gave Dusty plenty of time to intervene. A lot them will toss a player as soon as they say one word about whether it was a ball or strike. Joey kept arguing, and nobody came out to drag him away until it was too late.

This can be a .500-level team this year with a few changes:

(1) Dump Willy, and go to an outfield of Nix/Gomes/Dickerson/Hairston/Heisey (or Stubbs)
(2) Go after a SS

Glad to have missed this game.

Unless some major changes occur this team will slide right into a 79 win year.
Any new word on Jay?
Pitching has been iffy recently (Caleb duly noted)Appears that Harang was hit hard again…and Davey weathers giving up the long ball..still scored 7 runs with Votto tossed ain’t bad.

Come on Walt do something.

Something needs to be done in the OF

Even if it’s just getting the gears in motion for next year. With Jay Bruce out and now Dickerson potentially, we’re looking at a double-AA production.

Weathers is probably overworked and should probably be phased out as the 8th inning guy – or, as a reflection of what that role should be, 2nd-best reliever.

For all the late hitting, there’s no real reliable HR guy now that Bruce is out so the chain of singles makes for an inefficient way to get back in games. It’s clear from his struggles that Bruce needs a power bat to complement him in the OF. He also needs to be replaced now so that the team doesn’t get into Pirates territory, yielding total apathy from the fans. So go get a bat before the deadline and see what Gomes can do fulltime. Nix is back to his career averages.

And Cozart/Valaika aren’t going to cut it at SS next year. I love Janish, but we’re learning he’s exactly what he projects to be – a defensive replacement.

The core:

Votto
Phillips
Bruce
Hanigan
Gomes(?)

Harang
Volquez
Cueto
Bailey
Masset
Roenicke
Cordero (hesitant to put him here, but I think he stays next year)

Everyone else should be up for grabs if they can get someone with a bat in return

Just caught a little of Votto's ejection

When I saw the fan reaction jwhen he was tossed, every neuron fired with rage. They acted like Manny Ramirez was getting tossed. I know they were glad our best hitter was out, but, I don’t care. I’m so mad right now but I can’t yell at the TV. My dog gets upset. It’s weird to have to pretend to be happy for my dog!

Maybe Votto will really lay into some of these pitchers and catchers now. Pete Rose time! I know he is generally viewed in the press as the polite Canadian but even Canucks can get mad. Kiefer Sutherland is a pime exaple. No headbutts please Joey! I am really upset about the end of his hit streak through. He’ll get a hit in every game after he comes back and break DiMaggio’s record. It’s about time another ndividual of Italian descent hold that!

I could really see Harang being traded in the next two weeks

and while I still don’t favor the move, maybe it would be for the best. He’s got to be beyond exasperated playing for this team and I don’t see his trade value getting much higher.

I know Adam Rosales kind of stinks

buyt I love him and glad he’s back. At least when this team really starts to crater he’ll be out there with his absurd socks. Maybe he will get to start on Lady’s Night after all! (if I think about the negatives of this game I might have to get the hooch).

Before I forget, Hal McCoy said he was shocked by Votto’s ejection and described his fight with the ump as “yelping”. Didn’t look like that to me lol:

http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/cincinnatireds/

It’s a shame Votto got tossed and so frustrated, but I could see it coming. Anyone who saw last night’s game could have. He was boiling over then and just barely held it in. We’ve all felt like that or seen people like that and know they are going to go off. If you care, you get PO’d. It’s too bad it had to happen in this game. I’m pretty sure Votto won’t do it again, but I like to see fight in people.

by Red_Poodle on Jul 12, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

I would say it's a pretty accurate description
He was mad as hell and couldn’t take it any more. He yelped at Welke. And kept yelping. Welke let him go longer than most umpires permit players to argue about balls-and-strikes. Manager Dusty Baker was late arriving to push Votto away. Just when he got there, Votto had one more word for Welke and was ejected – his first ever ejection.

His first ever ejection…does that include the minors?

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jul 12, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

even in the minors?

Never ejected ever? Too bad it had to come in a game like this. My only objection to the description was the “yelping” part. Made it sound like a husky puppy or something (I have a strange imagination). It certainly seemed more like a full grown husky type thing to me (no I didn’t get the hooch, but I did hit the Luigi’s ice).

Good news that Joey's expressing his emotions

Especially good that he’s not afraid to be angry…cause we all know how quick Dusty is to anger.
this team has been in an emotional malaise for years….it is time for some of these guys to pissed as hell and not take it any more.

Dusty cares but is too even tempered
Dick pole went for the George Grande Partial lobotomy proecedure
Chris Speier is too depressed to get angry
Nobody knows anything about Brook Jacoby
Billy Hatcher is easy going but can get real fiery real fast.

I am not even on the team and I’m pissed…
I know Bob Castellini has got to be fuming

Come on Red’s management, do something smart now…come on Walt show us why you’re so highly regarded…

All Star break is coming just in time.

by Madville on Jul 12, 2009 5:56 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with all that

I have a bad temper so I know I get angry too easily, but it really is annoying to see no one get fired up. Hairston has, which is one of the reasons I like him. I don’t mean they should get PO’d about everything and act like punks, but they have to fight back some. They have to show they care. I just hope Joey never gets tossed again because we can’t survive without him.

by Red_Poodle on Jul 12, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Mostly agree

but we don’t want the kind of unfocused anger Phillips puts out. He tosses his bat down every time he gets out and almost hit the Mets’ catcher in the head. He should be hustling to first instead. That’s obviously a minor gripe, especially since he’s been pulling his weight relative to the rest of the team.

I don’t see how Jocketty doesn’t make a move in the next two weeks. You can’t wait until the offseason to try and lowball around for a SS or LF. EdE will probably have the rest of the season to prove he shouldn’t be non-tendered, but at this point I wouldn’t be opposed if they could pull off a Rolen-type deal.

But yes, DO SOMETHING. Even if it’s a one-for-one, straight up trade like the Francouer one.

definitely agree about the unfocused anger

it doesn’t help and only hurts. The best way to deal with frustration is do better, but it’s good to know they care

by Red_Poodle on Jul 12, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I came here to bitch.

I was having such a nice day ignoring the Reds and enjoying the sun. Then a textual message chirped my cellular telephone informing me that one Adam Rosales had been called up? Please, Lord, just let it be for the one game only.

I might just have to murder someone.
