The Drew Sutton Era Begins in Cincy (Update: Well that was quick)
According to Fay, Burton has been sent down and Drew Sutton has been called up to the Reds. Everytime I try to attach the link, my post gets screwed up, so I'll just copy it.
Here is part of that text:
"Sutton is the player the Reds got in the Jeff Keppinger trade with Houston. Sutton was hitting .254/.388/.492 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 130 at-bats for the Louisville. He spent time on the DL with mono right after the Reds got him. He can play all four infield positions and he's a switch-hitter."
So, is this the first of several moves? The team may be hovering not too far out of first, but as has been pointed out here, this team is also hovering not too far out of last. I don't think anyone seriously thinks this team will contend for the World Series this year. So, its time to start preparing for 2010. The next month will be interesting.

Why was there so much hype for a .250 hitter in AAA?

get past the batting average
his OBP is .388 and his slugging is .492 in Louisville. Thems pretty good numbers for an infielder.

This is a good move
These talented kids come up from LVille and oft time come on like gang busters until the league figures them out. We could have used this guy last nit instead of Richar. With the kind of OBP/SLG Sutton has Dusty will surely bat him 8th.

On an open thread a while back, I picked Sutton as my position player call-up. Now I just need Justin Lehr up here.

If things go south, we'll see all the AAA guys.
Taveras, Gonzo, Nix/Gomes will ride pine as Heisey, Sutton, Stubbs, and whoever else is good starts playing. Rite?

Why are so many Reds Reporters willing to bag the season?
First of all, as the 2006 Cards proved, just getting to the post-season gives you a reasonable shot at contending. With a healthy Volquez this short series rotation would be scary.
Second of all, if the Reds can end a million years of sub-.500, there might some fan interest.
Third, despite what is said so often here, generally, outside sources are less than enthusiastic on most of the higher level Reds prospects, except Homer and Stubbs and, since they are more objective, I’m more inclined to go with them.
Lastly, the Reds are a seven game win streak from grabbing first and keeping it. When EdE comes back and they trade for a bat, when Jay gets his BABIP up, and now Joey is healthy, the Reds are actually closer to first than last. It is way too soon to play Drew Sutton over established, productive veterans*
*there’s your out clause! There are damned few productive hitters on this team

if...when...if
welcome to Reds baseball of the aughts!
The general feeling I see about the Reds system is that they have no major prospects, but they have a ton of depth. The only place I see in their system where they lack a potential starter under the age of 25 (not star, but starter) is shortstop and catcher, and Cozart could be a good defensive specialist. It definitely helps that they had 3 major prospects come up last season. Having Cueto, Votto, and Bruce mean they don’t need a major star in the immediate future. If they can get some seriously solid hitters in guys like Frazier, Heisey, and Stubbs, plus maybe one or two others who might put it together, that is very productive minor league system.
I don’t mind if the Reds trade some of the youngsters for this season. I’m just not convinced that there is help out there where they need it. If they can get a good shortstop or a major bat without clearing out their farm system, then go for it. Otherwise, trying to fill holes with marginal help is exactly what they did in 2006, and I think that set the organization back more than anything.

Hey.
Did Sutton get an RBI in his first major-leage at bat or something?

Why down on Rosales still? Again it is hard to to get the majors and even harder to stay!!
by areuserious on Jul 6, 2009 12:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We're a finicky bunch
If a player comes up and underperforms, we complain. If the same player comes up again and sets the world on fire half of us will sing his praises while the other half wait for the other shoe to drop. It IS incredibly hard to get to the majors, and good on Rosales for doing so.
Me personally, I don’t care if a one armed platypus comes up as long as he hits. The problem with Rosales was that he’s hitting two points higher than his weight thus far this year. That doesn’t mean he won’t come up and hit .300 eventually but from here on my comfy couch, I’d rather have Sutton.
Oh and lastly, we make fun of everyone at some point. Except Votto. May God have mercy on the poor sap’s soul who makes fun of Votto, ‘cuz that’s MY MAN GIRLFRIEND!

good point
Votto is pretty much hands off, especially after his personal issues this season. Jay Bruce seems to be getting a bit of a free pass, however, as he has certainly regressed at the plate this season. And I might add that there seems to be a Janish clique here. I think all of the other positional players get both back pats and ass smacks.
Case in point ash loves her some EE and I constantly poke/jab her when he has errant throws. She tries to get back at me whenever Adam or Micah face adversity. Most of it is in good fun and born out of the frustration of our being Reds fans for the past twenty+ seasons.

Votto sucks
The guys is on steriods. he’s a juicer…plus he won’t come out of the closet. I mean in this day and age a real man is gonna stand up and say it" I’m gay and damn proud of it" Plus he’s always so circumspect, obviously he’s a faux academian – part intellectual snob and part golfer, that’s right fumor has it that he plays golf and washes his own dishes. Why we have a loser like this on the team is beyond me. so I called up Bob and asked him:
Mads: Hey Bob, why do you have dufus like Votto on the team
Bob: Hey he’s fime young man and future hall of famer"
Mads:" Hey I’m talking about VOTTO not Brandon Phillips"
Bob" That’s racist"
Needless to say not only is Votto a cancer but now Castellini has identified him as racist….
