Reds lose in 14 innings; Cubs are nearly as bad
Well, considering the Cubs payroll is approximately $65 million more than the Reds, I guess they got their money's worth.........barely. The Cubs aren't much better than we are........and we got all kinds of guys injured and what not.
Dusty pulled all the wrong punches today. Horrible. The offense is anemic. I'm pretty embarrassed to be a Reds fan right now. How many times in extra innings did they get the leadoff batter on and not score?
We have great pitching until you get to Lincoln and Burton. Burton was lucky. I think Dusty mailed it in when he sent Lincoln out there. And what kind of management keeps a guy like that??? Castellini, Jocketty and Dusty are really stinking up the joint.
Other than signing Hernandez, what good moves has Jocketty made? Tavares and Lincoln were weak signings.
Embarrassing to lose to a pathetic team like the Cubs. Geez, if we had spent $65 million more, I guarantee we'd win the division. They can't even hardly contend.

The Diamondbacks blew a huge lead for Dan Haren for the seoncd time this week.
That was hours ago. They’re still playing now. 6-6 in the 15th.
Just noticed this
From the Fayplacement:
Edwin Encarnacion (chipped bone/left wrist) has had a little setback in his rehab and will have an MRI on Monday, Baker said. Encarnacion remains sore after hitting and working out the past few days. “That’s a very delicate area,” Baker said. “A lot of little bones in there. He might have over-hit. But how do you know what’s over-hitting until you do it?”
Dusty also got kind of testy when asked about the lineup.
"I get tired of hearing that, I really do," Baker said. "First it started, how come Nix ain’t playing every day? … Whoever’s doing good, how come they ain’t playing that day? It don’t work like that. We’re a team and everybody’s gonna play.
Except Janish…
Dusty also stated that Taveras was his CFer.

Right now Chris Dickerson is my CF

i just don't get that
if a guy is on a hot streak, you play him until he cools off. you don’t play a .200 hitter when you’ve got a guy getting hits every day for the position.
that’s what winning teams do, anyway.
I guess Dusty
doesn’t believe in “playing the hot hand.”
Or maybe he thinks the .200 hitter is due!
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
So
I’m watching the Dodgers-Phillies game on ESPN. They were fretting about what was going to happen to Juan Castro when Manny gets back.
They interviewed Torre, and he said he’d make sure Castro got into a couple of games a week, even if everyone stayed healthy.
And knowing Torre…he will. I didn’t appreciate that about him when he was in NY. In fact, I was often annoyed at how he handled the bench. But he understood that every guy on the roster had to get regular playing time, if they were going to be any use.

I think you mean Juan Pierre

I was about to say
Manos de Oro, say whaaaaa?
Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?
The Padres
I think they may have lost in even more heartbreaking fashion than we did.
The scrappy, hustling David Eckstein hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 9th, sending it to extra innings. Nine extra innings.
They finally put Josh Wilson on the mound in the top of the 18th. Wilson, the infielder. Who last pitched in a blowout against Cincinnati (when he was a D-back). He gave up three runs, and the game.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Travis Wood/Homer Bailey
both pitchers give up zero runs and are working on 15 inning plus scoreless streaks.
Unlike last year where Homer was horrible both at MLB and AAA- since his 1st 2 starts- Homer has been lights out at AAA. I find it very encouraging he has bounced back from his call-up and then call-down with strong performances.
Once Volquez comes back- the Reds will have 4 dominant pitchers at the AA/AAA levels with still a pretty young MLB rotation. Which way will Walt go- deal one or two of the Minor League starters or deal an Arroyo or Harang to open space for Maloney or Bailey in the rotation.
Geez
If we spent $65 million more, I guarantee we’d have awesome recaps.

Dude Rock, With All Due Respect...
…there are a couple errors in your post:
1. Mike Lincoln was signed by the Reds in February 2008. The GM then was Wayne Krivsky, not Walt Jocketty.
2. Regarding your characterization that Dusty mailed it in when he sent Lincoln out there inb the 14th inning, there were no other relievers left in the bullpen except Masset, who worked two innings yesterday. All the other relievers had already been used.
Beyond that – what good moves has Jocketty made? Well, to begin with, he got rid of Dunn and Griffey and signed Taveras. The signing of Taveras allowed Jay Bruce to move to right field, where he’s a tremendous upgrade over Griffey defensively. Almost anybody with a pulse would be a defensive upgrade over Dunn. So along with Hernandez and the return of Alex Gonzalez, all of this has transformed the Reds from second worst in the NL in Defensive Efficiency Rating last year to second-best in the major leagues so far this year. Oh, and one of the guys he got for Griffey was Masset, who is currently 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP – he’s basically been lights out from the bullpen. He also signed Jonny Gomes and Laynce Nix to minor league contracts and now they’re both on the major league roster. Nix had three hits today, and it was Gomes’ sac fly in the eighth that sent the game into extra innings.
By the way, the team that “can’t hardly contend” is currently tied with the defending division champs in the NL Central standings, despite the fact that they’re missing their first baseman and third baseman and arguably their best starting pitcher, and their second baseman’s playing with a busted thumb. I know it’s been a long time since the Reds have even finished above .500 but, isn’t it refreshing to see them jockeying for position in the standings with the Brewers, Cubs, and Cardinals instead of the Pirates?
OK, I’ve said my piece, now I’m outta here. Go Reds!
JK
Moving Griffey was timely
Moving Dunn was beyond unfortunate. Just think how his additional offense would have contributed to this team with their upgraded pitching, Votto and a stronger bench. Losing Dunn prolly couldn’t be helped but God he is an offensive machine. And the jury is still out on Wily…he was hot for a while but I’d just as soon see Bruce or even Nix in center field if we still had Dunner that is. Even with Dunn’s loss Chris Dickerson is showing that he is significantly better as a CF (than as a corner guy)and at this time is out fielding, out throwing and out hitting Wily. Also for me the jury is out on Gonzo…he’s playing decent defense and starting to a hit a little but for my money he’s not that big of a positive for the team. I’d as soon see Jannish or Cherry at SS.
Masset is a good addition, signing Nix and Gomes and Hernandez are also good moves, but having a competitive pitching staff is the most important upgrade that this team has experienced. Pitching has made the Reds competitive more than anything.
It is inexcusable for scientists to torture animals; let them make their experiments on journalists and politicians. Henrik Ibsen
Griffey trade
was an insanely bad trade by Kenny Williams. It was ridiculous in the 1st place to think Ken could help any contending team. If the Reds saved million dollars in salary relief(in actuality I think the number was closer to 4 million) it was a great trade. To get a young pitcher that tops out over 95 on his fastball was highway robbery.
Likewise Walt traded 2 months of Adam Dunn for a very good 5th starter right now whom also is a pretty solid PH. Another Great Trade. Hernandez-Freel Trade- another A move by Walt. Signing of Rhodes Genius.
The bad moves Lincoln 2 years- not so good. The worse move is still the Taveras signing. Dickerson is better at every aspect of the game than Willie. Willies OBP is now at 318 below is career average and just like at the start of the season- I believe Taveras has a real shot to have a OBP under 300 and put up numbers pretty similar to Corey Patterson.
Yeah, the more I look at it, Tavares and Lincoln were bad signings.
Hernandez and Rhodes might be the two best signings. Laynce Nix looks like a diamond in the rough, but I hope it’s not just a small sample.
Masset was a good acquisition for KGJ. I never thought he would be, but when I watch him pitch, I’m impressed with his nasty stuff.
lincoln was resigned this offseason
by walt jocketty
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand
Mike Lincoln was signed for 1 year by Krivsky for like a tryout and he made the squad. Jocketty re-signed him this offseason to a 2-year contract for $4 million.
I guess I blame management and the manager for even having Lincoln on the team to send out in that situation. It’s just a blow to the rest of the pitcher’s who held the lead. But I understand your point.
I like Walt. I like this team to a point. I’m behind the youth movement. But it’s been forever since we’ve looked like a contender, and when you get a taste of it, you want more. I’m usually patient, but I just don’t think we’re that far behind the Brewers, Cards and Cubs. I think, when healthy, we have the best pitching. Cards have a better e.r.a. than us, but I don’t think that will hold up……either that or it’s the way Lasorda handles his pitchers vs. how Dusty handles his. In other words, aside from Lincoln and Burton, I think the rest of our staff is the best in the NL Central.
I was amazed Walt was able to unload Griff last year. I wasn’t that impressed by Masset at first, but now I love watching him pitch. His stuff is nasty.
Also amazed he got Owings for Dunn. Yes, two good moves.
But he did sign Lincoln, and I’m not very big on Tavares. I’d be just as happy with Dickerson out there and his incredible defense. Watch Tavares at the plate……..he has no clue about the strike zone and swings at terrible pitches. And his defense is questionable. He was brought here because of his speed and he’s been nothing but injured which has negated exactly what we needed from him. It was a questionable signing at the time, and still remains so.
Nix was a good find. I guess Gomes was too, but no other team really wanted him anyway.
Krivsky signed Harang and Arroyo to multi-year deals a few years back. Krivsky signed Cordero a few years back. Krivsky traded for Volquez. Krivsky DID NOT trade Cueto away and here he is. The starting rotation is all Krivsky.
I am very fired up about our double A club. Heisey, Frazier, Alonso, Henry, Eymann, Cozart, Wood, Stewart………and Fairel in single A. Stubbs in triple AAA. Homer in triple A. We have some good things going on in the minors. Hopefully they can help fill holes in the near future.
No quick fix
I was disappointed by the game today as well. I’m sure the other drivers on the road wondered what I was doing as I listened on the radio. The problem is that there is no way to solve this problem right now. It’s just a weak lineup. It’s even kind of weak with Votto and Encarnacion. There’s no one in Louisville who could help with the offense. But deep down I’m okay with this because I didn’t think they’d be this good right now anyway. And I think it’s a poor choice of words to call the Cubs pathetic. They have underachieved, true, but they are still a good team who is also a bit banged up as well. I think it speaks better of the Reds being able to compete well with them both at a time when they are missing key players as well as coming off of a tough road trip. And as for Lincoln, it was a good signing at the time. He had a pretty good year last year, but hasn’t been able to get it going this year. But I hope he does.

Okay. I’ve calmed down a bit and I might be more reasonable.
Lincoln was much better last year. By my memory, he actually had a stint in the middle of last season for like 2 months where he was nearly unhittable and got his stats to respectability.
I thank Kenny Williams for taking KGJ off our hands and actually giving us, possibly, our future closer, in Masset. The dude had nasty stuff. Seriously.
I also agree that Jocketty did pretty well to get Owings out of Arizona. While I’d like to pursue better options in the 5th starter role, I do appreciate Owings many talents. I wouldn’t mind seeing him going down to triple AAA and working at LF and LOOGY.
Face it. The loss of Votto has affected every area of this organization and we’re still in contention. While I sympathize with Joey’s problems, I had high hopes early on with his production (which has been pretty consistent all season) and really felt that his combination of production with the pitching we had, would put us into contention. Without Joey, I have become very negative, and the Reds are making my concerns legitimate.
Bruce is in a funk. Nix isn’t getting any pitches to hit now. The bullpen has to defend a lead nearly every night. It’s stressful on the entire team. While I respect their efforts, it’s falling short.
Factor in that Reds fans have been waiting a long, long time……………you can understand the frustration, and desire for management to make a move.
I may be a new poster, but my Father bought our first color TV for the ’75 Playoffs.
I’ve rejoiced and suffered for a long time.
That's all well and good
We’re all frustrated. We all want Joey back, healthy and productive. We all want some of Jay’s hits to finally start falling. It’s been a rough couple weeks, but nothing to be flipping out over. Perspective, dude… rock.
a right-handed LOOGY?
you want him to go to triple AAA and start throwing left handed?

It looks like they are turning Stewart into a starter
All of his games have been as a starter this year. And he’s basically been lights out.

I saw that
I remember dougdirt mentioning that even though he was starting they still see him as a reliever they just wanted to refine his offspeed stuff. That might have changed and I wouldn’t have a problem with them keeping him as a starter.

Awesome game yesterday, the Hanson kid for the Braves is GOOD no matter what his line says. Oh, and there’s this:

I shall return. And I shall do so with fantastical stories. Hugs and kisses from GA, bitches. :)
