Don't you remember you told me you'd score for me baby? Carpenter feasts on Reds "offense" (but really hides it in his napkin)

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Albert Pujols.  He drove in all three runs, and winked at George Grande.

Key Plays

  • Albert Pujols hit a two run homer in the third.
  • Albert Pujols hit a double in the sixth that scored Colby Rasmus.
  • Laynce Nix homered in the eighth inning.
  • Following the last out of the ninth inning, Tony LaRussa gave D.J. Reyburn the rest of the $50 he'd promised him before the game.

Other Notes

  • Laynce Nix has three home runs in his last two games.
  • Both pitchers threw complete games, though Chris Carpenter threw one more inning but 20 fewer pitches.  Their chinstrap beards were equally goofy.
  • Besides Nix's home run, Carpenter only gave up two hits, both of which were singles by Chris Dickerson.  And both times Brandon Phillips promptly erased the threat by grounding into double plays.
  • This was Aaron Harang's 200th career start.  Would you have guessed that his career record is 74-72?
  • Jay Bruce went 1-27 on the road trip.
  • This is the first time since opening day that Harang has lost a game in which he gave up three or fewer runs.
  • The game only took two hours and five minutes.

Pujols?

I gotta say Carpenter. He’s unreal.

And Randy Johnson got the 300th win. I assume Daedalus was there to see it.

positive note

Carpenter’s ERA went up.
Harang had a solid bounce back game.
Could have been an okay road trip if they wouldnt have wasted 2 or more runs on the basepaths Saturday.

Still worried about Aaron

He didn’t walk many but his control still seems off. He left more than a few up up in the zone. I think he was a little lucky tonight.

next up

Hide the drink dispensers! It’s Zambrano vs. Owings. Zambrano will be going for his 100th win. (It was supposed to be tonight, but they were rained out.)

And on Saturday, it’s Ryan Dempster vs. Matt Maloney.

Dammit. I always get Zambrano.

Well, at least I can hope for an epic Z meltdown that includes 8 ER and an attempted tossing of the umpire.

my favorite Z game ever

was this one where he overthrew it to 3rd base on a pickoff (attempting to pick off Eric Milton, no less), allowing Milton to score. Also featured Dunn, FeLo, and Kearns home runs, Matt Murton showing why he was the Next Big Thing, and yours truly in attendance.

My favorite

Was Opening Day 2007 when Dunn hit two HR off him. You could actually see the mental meltdown. :)

I think we need to trade Harang

After 200 starts, he is only 74-72. He should have 120 wins after the way he has pitched. If he could get traded to a team with a bullpen and some run support, maybe the rest of the league would recognize how good he is because he is clearly wasting away with this team.

I gotta say Nix is impressive as hell so far

Get Bruce turned around – I don’t know, just make a video loop of when he came into the league and have it play on some of those video goggles. Also forbid him to swing at anything low and away for a while. Make sure Joey is getting first rate help. If all three of those guys got going, you would brutalize right handers.

Also, even with Gallardo pitching (and with all others), the Brewers either used intentional walks or the unintentional/intentional walk for Pujols. The best part is that he gets so desperate to hit that he starts swinging at crap and you end up getting a K or two. Gimme the Dusty phone and I’ll clue him in.

The Reds suck

I am losing all perspective and patience.

I don’t even know what to say about Jay Bruce; at least drop him down in the order. It kills the team to have an automatic out in the cleanup spot.

WTF BP? Really? Perhaps his worst game ever. I guess that is something to build on.

We cannot hope to contend without JV, EE and EV. Why, Joey, why?

I only look forward to games that Cueto starts.

Nice defense tonight, A-Gon. Ever consider getting a hit?

Hanigan needs a night off. Taveras needs a DL stint.

At least the Brewers lost.

hmmm not a good sign so far

if they win 2/3 from cubs it would be 4-6 on this 10 game stretch, which ain’t terrible, but it also ain’t what a division winner or even wild card team would do. This team might make it to 85 wins, maybe even 90 tops, but I don’t think the division is theirs this year. Just hope nothing crucial gets tossed away in some mad hope to win now, this team has a bright future.

What is frustrating

is that no one can really know if this team is a contender with 3 crucial players out of the lineup (not Taveras, Volquez)

We need to get all three back, fast.

I also would vote for Pujols as JNMHSG

Carpenter is good, but he only had 3 ks and that lineup suuuuucks.

Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?

Coldplay Lie

Chris Martin sang that the Reds had beat the Cardinals last night at the Coldplay gig so I didn’t even check the score until now. Liar….Unless he meant the night before.

He did not sing any other baseball updates as far as I am aware.
…Unless “Yellow” was some Votto dizziness DL update.

On the bright side of things

That was a real shitstain of a road trip, but we’re still only out of first place by 2.5 games.
