Lifeless: Reds offense, downtown St. Louis after dark, Anne Frank. Reds lose 5-2.
Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Skip Schumaker. He went 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Key Plays
- Arroyo got into trouble early when he walked Skip Schumaker to lead off the game, then gave up a double to Colby Rasmus. Pujols grounded out to drive in a run.
- Bronson got a two base hit in the third, but shit, Willy Taveras and Jay Bruce wouldn't believe a double and left him stranded.
- The Reds faked like they wanted to win the game in the fourth inning. Brandon Phillips led off with a double, and Ramon Hernandez singled to put runners on the corners. Nix hit a sac fly to score one, and Hernandez took second on a botched hit and run, getting the elusive stolen-base-by-a-painfully-slow-catcher. Alex Gonzalez singled him to third, where he scored on Adam Rosales's hit that was misplayed for a two base error. The Reds led 2-1 and after an intentional walk to Ryan Hanigan had the bases loaded with one out. Bronson Arroyo stepped to the plate... and grounded into an inning ending double play. And that was it for the Reds on offense.
- In the fifth inning, Schumaker singled and scored on a double by Pujols.
- Everything blew up in the sixth. Bronson hit Yadier Molina with a pitch, and he moved to third on a single by Joe Thurston. Nick Stavinoha then doubled to plate them both, and came around to score himself on two wild pitches by Carlos Fisher, our Frisch's Big Boy Big Play of the Game.

Other Notes
- The Reds did not get a hit after the fourth inning.
- Jay Bruce is 1-20 on this road trip, and Willy Taveras is 3-23. Taveras also missed a fly ball in the sixth, leading some to believe that his hamstring isn't fully mended.
- Ramon Hernandez stole his first base since May 6, 2007.
- Jared Burton pitched the final two innings in his "return" from Louisville, even though he never actually went anywhere. Tonight he gave up no runs, one hit, one walk, and struck out three. Hopefully he's turned a page.

Jared Burton is a bitch. Lars Ulrich, on the other hand, is indifferent. And a bitch.

Arroyo
When is Arroyo officially going to change his name to Yo-yo?

Arroyo didn't pitch that poorly
he struggled, but a little help from his defense and he leaves with that game as a tie or 3-2 at worst.

I’d go for a little one on one…

The Fay
says it’s gotta be Maloney:
Homer Bailey pitched very well Louisville tonight — eight shutout innings, four hits, two walks, eight strikeouts. He’s 5-5 with 3.79 ERA. But the that fact that he threw 117 pitches tells you that he won’t be starting for the Reds Saturday.
That means it’s left-hander Matt Maloney — unless the Reds have something unforeseen planned. The bullpen is too worn out for a bullpen day. The start also falls on the turn of Zach Stewart, the third-round pick. He’s been putting on zeros at AA. But I’ve got to think it’s Maloney.

Um, the headline
wow.
Probably for the first time this season, this loss is on the outfield defense. Nix’s misplay of Pujols double made it no doubt that Skip would skore. And Taveras’s terrible play on the flyball that should have been caught directly contributed to two runs scoring (Thurston and Stavinoha).
Then again, the offense couldn’t get any hits off of a guy that hadn’t pitched in over 2 weeks.

Well, obviously there was no recent scouting report on him.
Has that joke been used yet?

re: the headline
I feel like I ought to be offended by all 3. But mostly the first one.

Thta's because there is no offense
Taveras — can’t hit
Bruce — maybe can hit
Phillips — can hit
Hernandez — on the downside of a long career. can still hit
Nix — re-tread
Rosales — Quad A utility player with a nice arm and a glove of lead
Hanigan — career minor leaguer, back-up catcher
A-Gon — defensive player
The only two hitter in this line up right now are Phillips and Hernandez. Bruce is struggling so much I think Congress should consider a law making the breaking illegal in his AB’s. Make him his changes, cutters, and fastballs and he might produce.
The early success of this team was predicated on good starters, great bullpen work, and Joey Votto. It was neither a deep team nor a particularly talented offensive one (the improvements in defense and ending black holes/sub-replacement level performances in CF, C, and SS were supposed to make the team better). However, young and shallow teams need luck: to stay out of injuries, to get unexpected years from contributors, to find a diamond in the rough, and to not have other contenders run away from them. The Reds are in an injury funk right now (I’m betting Volquez will have Tommy John, but I’m a pessimist), but they still have three starters and a decent pen. I’m hoping they hang around long enough to get Votto and EdE back and add an OF bat (or SS). If so, they could steal the division.
But, anyway, there will many games to come where a Brad Thompson clone eats them for dinner, because, dang it, they can’t hit with this line-up

I'm having a good day! Can't type, can't hit reply button. get abused by Colin
Won’t be complete until Charlie or BK “asks” me to stop posting
Tim...may I call you Tim?
Fuck old Colin,,,your typing is understandable and your commentary is on the money,I would reiterate that the Reds have some offense sitting on the bench in Jonny Gomes. I can see no reason with Votto out and Bruce struggling that Gomes shouldn’t be in there everyday along with Nix. either put Gomes at 1st or in LF. In another post i suggested that Owings play first base until Votto is back as well.
I proposed the following line up and batting order:
Jerry Jr. 3B
Gonzo SS
BP 2B
Nix RF
Owings 1B
Gomes LF
Bruce CF
Ramon C
XXXX P
And when Wily gets better and starts hitting and EdE comes back well then change it up again. But we need some big bats on the field and we need them now.

Yes, you can call me Tim
or anything else for that matter. I would like to see Gomes used at first, as well, since it would seem he would have a higher slg% than Ryan. Still, counting on Gomes is just like counting on Nix (who has surprised) or counting on Hairston. Until Bruce comes around and a hitting EdE returns, we are going to be seriously scuffling ( I doub I need to add that there is no guarantee EdE is going to come back hitting, but I believe he will and, damn it, that’s good enough for me.
