Off Day Open Thread: All Star Representative Edition
Sorry about the lack of posts from the normal writers today. Work is kicking my butt right now, and you don't need BubbaFan to tell you that losing a job in this market isn't necessarily the best thing in the world. So, I have a hard time finding time to write at this point, but hopefully things will calm down in the next week or two.
These off days seem frequent of late. I suppose that's not a bad thing when the team is struggling, but it's shame to lose any sense of momentum after taking 2 of 3 from Cleveland and 3 of their last 4 overall.
Tonight's topic for discussion: Assuming Joey Votto won't get selected because of the time he missed, who should be the Reds representative to this year's All Star game in St. Louis? Here are some suggestions, but you can definitely go your own way:
Brandon Phillips:
- 3rd in WAR for 2B in the NL.
- Tied for 1st in RBI by a 2B
- 3rd in HR by 2B
- Defending Gold Glove winner at the position
Johnny Cueto:
- Tied for 5th in the NL in ERA and WHIP
- 4th in the NL in ERA+
- 9th in the NL in H/9
- Leads the team in ERA and winning percentage
- 2nd on the team in wins and strikeouts
Aaron Harang:
- 4th in the NL in BB/9
- 6th in the NL in K/BB
- 2nd in the NL CG and SHO
- 15th in the NL in Innings Pitched
- Leads team in SO and fewest BB/9
- 2nd on the team in ERA
Francisco Cordero:
- Tied for 5th in the NL in Saves
- Converted 18 of 19 save opportunities
- 6th in the NL in ERA+ (min 30 IP)
Willy Taveras:
- Leads team in SB
- All Star appearance might boost trade value.

Rob Duibble and Randy Myers both went one year.
And Norm Charlton should have!
Reds fan for 40 years!
imo, we have a handful of guys that could be declared top 5 at their position
but none that are really the best, or second best (sorry BP) at their position, except for Rhodes. Plus, Rhodes will murder anyone that claims to be a better set-up man. Oh, and widows, don’t expect flowers, Arthur hates flowers, iced coffee, and excuses.

Danny Ray!
Who’s the top story on Reds.com today.
And you aren’t imagining it. The off days are coming very frequently these days. I noticed it when I first looked over the schedule at the beginning of the season. (The Yanks’ schedule is very similar.) The end of May through June has almost every Monday off. A very noticeably empty block on the calendar.
I don’t like it. Mondays are rough enough; they don’t need to be baseball-less, too.
I spent this evening reading. Just finished “Baseball Great,” a children’s book about – believe it or not – baseball. It’s written by a former football player, Tim Green, but he obviously understands baseball, too. At least playing it. I’m not sure he understands how it works on the pro level.
It’s set in Syracuse. The hero is a 12-year-old boy who’s a star SS. The book starts with his dad, a former first round draft pick who never made it to the show, being released by the Chiefs. The author apparently changed his mind about whether dad was a relief pitcher or a position player. He’s described as a relief pitcher at one point, but later in the book, his batting average is touted. Whatever he is, he’s the team MVP. I find it kind of hard to believe the MVP would be released, even if he’s 31. And if he was, some other team would surely claim him.
The story revolves around the kid being put into a special baseball program and pressured to take steroids. Pretty predictable (it is a kid’s book). But I enjoyed the descriptions of the baseball games, and of Syracuse and its ballpark.

I think it should be BP
but I think it will be Cordero. Dude is the best well known and people love saves. Plus there’s always room for another pitcher.
On the other hand, who other than Utley in the National league deserves it over BP?
With his new plate approach and subsequently much better season, I hope he gets it.
Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?
i think it's O-Dawg
but i didnt look it up.
I voted BP too. i’d go with Cueto too, but i think you are right about Coco. chicks dig the save ball.

Lol
I dig the save ball a bit. I have noticed an odd thing, for myself, anyway. Pitching is great when you watch on TV, but, for some reason, even Aaron can become a little bit sexy when he strikes someone out when you’re there in person.
It’s probably just me lol
Not just you
I want a little bit of the 6’7" 265 lb Harangatan myself when he gets rollin’.

And jch.

LOL
I didn’t say anything about wanting a piece of the Harangatan, just noting that he was a little sexy.
Maybe it’s a KY thing?
He's your first cousin?

That was a good one
But no I don’t think there is any relation. I prefer to find international players sexy, though, it limits the potential for consanguinity ;)
Like, oh...
…Canadians? ;-)

What about Goth-rang?

He’s just like Trent Reznor ladies!

Oh my!
I don’t know what to say, but Bronson better look out, because he will have to compete with Harangatan in pitching and music.
That's what happens when you don't get run support.
You turn into a goth kid.

I went with BP
He’splayed well and he played through pain when we needed him too. He’s got a good bat and a good glove. I’m sticking with the ocasionally insubordinate BP lol.
I still say Votto
Has more than an outside chance and could get selected. I know he missed time but it was hard to ignore the way he was tearing the cover off the ball pre- and now post-DL. I won’t be shocked if he is out there, and really would like to see him.
If not him, maybe BP, but there are lots of worthy 2B-men this year. Cordero I don’t see making it. Would like to, but something tells me he’ll get passed over. Cueto has a great shot. Harang has none. If I had to pick one guy to be our rep, I’m going with Cueto.
The problem for Votto may be the depth at 1B.
If he had not missed a month, I’d say he’s a lock, but that layoff will probably give the other premier 1Bs the edge over him. Pujols is obvious, Fielder will probably go, and Old Man Manuel will almost certainly give a spot to Ryan Howard, especially since he’s from St Louis. I don’t see them taking 4 1Bs, and if they do, he’s still got to contend with Adrian Gonzalez and Berkman. Gonzalez may have an equally strong resume by virtue of his home runs this year.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Votto in the ‘last man in’ ballot thingy, in which case I’m going to vote about 1,000 times a day.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.
Wait we can ote for Joey V. in this?
I would of course vote for him, but I think Gapper might be right. No doubt he deserves it, I just presumed he was out of the running a this point. I’m more than willing to cheat the voting though lol
If Willy Tavarez makes the All-Star game I'll kick JCH in the dick.

Don't worry, I think you're safe either way
