RR BURGER TOUR - ZIP'S Wed 6/24
The Burger Train is once again getting ready to depart the terminal. This week the stop will be Cincinnati's venerable burger legend Zip's. There are many folks who swear that Zip's has the best burger in town and I sure didnt know that the restaurant partnered with Bleh-Avril and Sons. It's been a while since I've been there and I'm interested to determine where this local legend ranks vs some of the other places we've already been. Im pretty sure that jch will volunteer to take down The Train Wreck(seeing as how he's our resident food mauler)

Love Zips.
We’d take the kids there when they were young. I remember when they were around the ages of 10,7,6 and 2 we’d go on Friday nights. No matter how noisy or rambunctious they got no one hardly noticed. Zips was already noisy and rambunctious. YUMBO BURGERS DUDES.

meh
1) there is no such thing as happily married. there is happy and there is married. two completely separate entities. ask Jon and Kate.
2) Winnipeg and Ghana are not “safe”. Our boy is proficient on the Internets and can speed text. Has either D been added as his facebook friend? If so, im afraid its a fatal wound. Many, many women strenulously vow that if loving jch is wrong they dont wanna be right! And its those long-distance, emotionally charged electronic communique affairs that create the strongest bond. I’d highly recommend getting those two lassies back in town asap.

Quick rundown
Zip’s has a good burger, no doubt about it. Not in the same class as Terry’s but good nonetheless. My only complaints would be that it’s DARK in that place and M.C. Escher designed the men’s bathroom.
I was third to arrive behind obc and Ash, and was followed soon thereafter by BK. We claimed a table after some arguing over how many seats we needed since I was under the misconception that Mads would be joining us. We settled in with a couple of beers after Ash asked the waitress three different times for a draft selection. She’s going senile right before our eyes, I tell you.
We ordered as follows, with piccy goodness:
I had a plain burger with Cheddar on a regular bun because I’m a big wuss:

obc had a byrger with Swiss on marbled Rye bread and all the dressings. I have to admit it looked pretty good:

Now on to the wise/brave ones. I had never been to Zip’s before so I didn’t know you could get cheese on your fries. BK did, and was kind enough to share. Much better than the regular fries IMO. He had a burger with American on a regular bun, but with some of the dressings:

As we all know, Ash loves her meat, so she went big girl on us and ordered the Girth Burger with American cheese. For the unacquainted the Girth Burger is a burger topped with a split mett. I had to take a bite even though it had condiments on it. It was pretty good.

As we finished up and contemplated further plans ($1 beers at Million’s, w00t), an old friend walked in to join us. Mads himself came strolling in and promptly showed us up by ordering two cheeseburgers and fries:

I would compare the burgers favorably with Arthur’s or Quatman’s, they were handmade from good meat, and juicy. I would have liked to order mine medium instead of well done, but what are you gonna do? I’d definitely go back.
Afterward we went to Million’s where I sucked at pool and beer was cheap. Good times had by all, as always.
If you’re a local RR there’s really no excuse not to come out and join us sometime. We don’t bite, although there might be some licking involved if you’re lucky.

news and notes
*the bathroom is truly indescribable. Imagine a potty on a plane but more cramped and separated into two rooms.
*the first beer was skunky draft Stella
*The marbled rye was an inspired choice. It really made the burger stand out as being different than most places. I, too, would prefer a medium rare burger but medium well is still ok.
*the best part about ash asking for the beers on tap three times is that the draught beer selection was written on the wall right next to us. it took me a good 40 minutes to find the sign.
it was dark, as in Mammoth Cave dark in there.
*ash deleted the 27 photos i took of her playing with her iPhone.
*Millions had one lady on site whom we debated about. The attire the herd of women at the end of the bar wore was quite the discussion topic. In the end BK and I agreed upon whom was the most appropriately attired woman in the joint. We also enjoyed quite the cackle at the dudes whom comprised Douchebag Entourage v3.0. The best was the bandanna-ed fellow who wore a striped shirt and plaid shorts. stay classy, mt lookout!

At the Displaced DC Meetup at Momo's last night
I had a burger to feel like part of the club. I ordered the bacon blue, which comes covered in blue cheese. I asked for medium rare, but it came out decidedly unpink. It also seemed to take forever. Another Reds fan, Chris, ordered a burger the same time as me, when it was 0-0. The burgers didn’t show up until it was 5-1, and the game was well out of hand. Still, the blue cheese added a nice zing to the taste, though a juicier burger would have made it perfect. I continue to be impressed by Momo’s food. Daedalus and Gray can let you know about the Somali dishes on the menu.
We didn’t have dollar beer, but buckets of Budweiser American Ale were $12, which isn’t too shabby for DC. Everyone at the table ordered a bucket. The company was good – a real pleasure to meet Gray – and so was the food, even if the game was shit. They were also showing the Minnesota-Milwaukee game, and we occasionally hurled insults at the Brewers fans in the corner. Then the Brew Crew scored two runs on some terrible defense by the Twins in the 8th, and Todd Coffey ends up with the win. Not the best night to be a Reds fan.
I didn’t have a camera, so no fun pictures.

at least as far as production and research. Miami’s history department is a degree factory, OSU and U.C. were the only two public schools in the state of ohio not to be chastiised for producing too many history ph.d’s. Of course there are more to universities than history programs.

Ahem
I attended several universities over the years and can tell you without prejudice that certain colleges at OSU are exceptional…however many of the students are not much more than fodder for the $$$ machine, Miami on the other hand has a few exceptional departments (Anthropology, Religion, Ping Pong and Tri Delt Rush seminar 101 to name some) the student body in genmeral was compiled of the dullest group of smart kids I’ve ever been around. The University of Wisconsin was really challenging intellectually but classes could be large, there was an artistic and political fire in the air and the students for the most part were very bright. Urbana University (summer school) was an absolute joke. The most academically rigorous school was Ohio Wesleyan…good little music school, fine English dept, and many many many attractive rich co-eds.Again the students were very bright and well off, but as interesting and imaginative as the general Miamian was dull and blank.
The Fabulous Mrs. M graduated from Miami so you know there were and are exceptions to the rools.
Took a class at USC at Berkley on Sound Recording which was cool, but everyone there was very into being very into being…you know what we’re talking about…right!

About the last paragraph, Mads, I do know what you're talking about
and I fucking hate those people.
Eighty-five percent of the f*ckin' world is working. The other fifteen percent come out here. A f*ckin' playground for the cocks*ckers.

i think i'm looking at it from the perspective of graduate level
OSU being a large money machine has several excellent grad schools. It is of my opinion that smaller schools like Miami, Ohio Wesylan, Oberlin, ONU (Biased I know), Kenyon, Antioch etc, are superior undergraduate programs, students get more opportunities to work with professors, go to conferences, things like that but large schools are better grad schools, because they have more money for funding.

although after seeing my girlfriends experiance at Pitt
i think it might be one of the most underrated universities in the country, it is a top flight college at both the graduate and undergraduate level, in many departments.

yeah. But it's in Pittsburg
Pitt and Case Western will always have a tough time getting kids, because there ain’t a lot of folks that want to start their careers in Pittsburgh or Cleveland. A teensy-tinsy minority go to grad school, the rest have lives to get on with. And not a lot want to get on with it on the North Coast

just one department (SMALL SAMPLE SIZE ALERT)!
Pitt has an excellent graduate history program, with renowned profs and they place their students well. Their chair is one of the foremost Cuban History Scholars.

Otterbien? My mom lives there...

http://www.otterbein.org/stmarys/STMarys_home.htm
Mom is (as you know) 98 and she recently fell and broke her pelvis. This is the 2nd time she’s done it – this time is more serious but she’s handling it great. I went up to visit a couple days ago (right when she did it, ) she’s in a small traction set-up and she can’t get out of bed so she’s restless. we talked about the Reds and she pretty much has the same take that Slyde has…but she ‘says’ she done with them now – But I just talked with her on the phone and, of course she wanted to make sure that they were playing at 7:00 tonight. so Slyde you have a comrade in theory…but she’s just to much of a fan to completely give up on the Reds. She must be getting ‘senile’ as she told me that she likes Dusty, that he’s doing the best can with what he’s got….I’m checking her into the Alzheimer’s ward as soon as she recovers from this pelvis thing….well I guess it could be the morphine talking.
