Bronson Arroyo vs Brad Thompson

Partly cloudy. Game time temperature around 85.

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Bronson Arroyo 7-3 5.12 1.37 32 22

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Brad Thompson 0-1 4.30 1.23 6 2

Bronson Arroyo tries to keep the good mojo going as the Reds try to follow up last night's win with more of the same.  Arroyo has pitched 24 innings over his last 3 starts with a svelte 1.88 ERA, seeing his season ERA drop nearly 2 full runs in that span.  At 7-3, he is tied for the most wins in the National League, and he's one of 5 pitchers with at least 10 starts who has gotten the decision in each of his starts.

The Reds could use a good 7 or 8 innings out of Arroyo tonight after throwing five relievers out on the mound in last night's game.  Since Jared Burton isn't likely to make it back to the team in time for tonight's game, the pen could likely use some rest tonight.

Brad Thompson will be pitching tonight for the first time since May 17th.  No, as a matter of fact, he was not on the disabled list, but thanks for asking.  He simply has not been used by the Cardinals since then.  I guess they were saving him for this big game but they couldn't do the math to figure out when to stick him in the rotation so that his start would fall on this day.  Tonight will be Thompson's first start of the year after making 6 starts last season, including 2 against the Reds.  For some reason, TLR seems to think Brad Thompson should start against the Reds.  Who's to argue with The Genius?

With the Brewers losing last night, the Reds are just 2.5 games out of first place.  A win tonight will put them in a tie for second place with the Cardinals.  You have to get to second place before you can get to first.  Tonight feels like a good night for making that first step.

As bad as it sounds

This could be great for Reds fans…. if the Reds can find ways to win without Voltron and Votto… think about how great it will be when they come back and we keep winning

One of my good friends is a StL fan.

After we beat them yesterday, his reaction was similar to Brandon Phillips’ post-Brewers series reaction.

“Bullshit.”

Why is it bullshit, Nate?

“Because you guys suck. We’re better than you.”

We’re 3-1 against you this year.

“You guys suck.”

I'm pretty sure Burton never left the team

Willy Taveras 8

Jay Bruce 9

Brandon Phillips 4

Ramon Hernandez 3

Laynce Nix 7

Alex Gonzalez 6

I don’t have any big problem with it. He has more protection there, at least. Maybe he’ll change his approach. I don’t like Gonzales so high in the order. Hanigan has been great.

I'm thinking that if Willy gets on that means more fastballs for Bruce

Bruce can hit fast balls… and maybe a good night at the plate gets him some confidence to slow down and figure out the breaking stuff

And THEN they decide to intentionally walk him? Why’d he throw the strike?

Travis Wood with another solid start tonight

Amazing improvement in his location this year. Only 46 hits in 65 innings. He just needs to improve his control for next year.

If Maloney can’t get the job done(not sure he has it) to be a change of pace lefty, Wood is the next in line.

Why the fuck is there a hit and run on with Alex Fucking Gonzalez at the plate? Who the hell throws Gonzalez a strike with the first pitch? He’s going to swing at it. Pitchers know it. What the fuck?

They lack talent on their pitching staff, minus Pujols and the potential of Rasmus, they don’t have much talent on offense.
