Red Reposter - 6/2/09
- Good news about Volquez from Hall o' Famer Hal. He says Volquez only experienced tingling in his arm, pinkie, and ring fingers on one pitch, and was lifted as more of a precaution. He's headed back to Cincinnati today for a full evaluation, but Hal believes he'll be back on the mound for his next start on Saturday against the Cubs. So take heart justin, looks like you wont have to miss your boy Matt Maloney's first major league start.
-
Jared Burton was demoted before the beginning of Monday's game to make way for Edinson Volquez. Burton says he understands the demotion because he knows he wasnt pitching well. He has a 6.33 ERA in 20 appearances.
-
Chris Dickerson is the yin to Jared Burton's yang as Burton has lost confidence in himself and struggled, Dickerson says boosting his confidence has helped him get back on track. "I was mentally paralyzing myself with negativity," Dickerson said. "That was no way to play. I wasn't having any fun and was putting too much pressure on myself to do well. As long as I go out there and be myself and let things naturally take over, I will have success."
-
Dusty Baker says he's not worried about Joey Votto.
He says he hasnt spoken to Votto since Friday but he knows he'll call when he's ready. "He is one of the most respectful players I've had, easily. He's wonderful on and off the field. He's a pro like I'd like to have my son be. A great example." -
Rick Hummel at the St Louis Post-Dispatch
says Dusty Baker really earned his pay with that win last night. I wholeheartedly agree. It aint easy to pull out a game like that with Jerry Hairston sick, Willy Taveras out with a sore hamstring, your best hitter Joey Votto on the DL, and your starting pitcher leaving after 1 inning. Kudos Dusty. -
Jeff at Redlegs Rundown wonders if last night was the biggest win of the year
so far for these Reds. And with Arroyo facing Brad Thompson tonight, who hasnt pitched in over 2 weeks, and Cueto facing Kyle Lohse on Wednesday, he has high hopes for the rest of the series. -

The Baseball Analysts: 2009 Draft Day Spotlight: Tanner Scheppers
This is the guy that Baseball America thinks the Reds will pick in the draft, though it's doubtful that he'll be around when the Reds pick. Personally, I'd be just fine with any of the polished college pitchers coming out, like Kyle Gibson, Aaron Crow, Alex White, or Scheppers. -

First...pitches of all time
That makes me cringe every time I see it. Poor guy.
And oh, look – an article mentioning the “surprising Reds.” been there, done that..!

I was only able to get 6 of the 8 players who have stolen 90 bases
the other two were tough.

He's gotta be a Palin fan also.
Plus there’s this also. “Nothing gets me more excited than a Nor’Easter dumping three feet of snow.”
Also, I can’t wait till he gets promoted also.

But he knows how to get the message to Dusty
Personally, two is my favorite spot to hit in. I can bunt. I think I can hit situationally pretty well and obviously can run a little bit and get on base but also drive some runs in. Two would be my ideal.
I thought his explanation for his improvement was pretty interesting. Bully for the coaches.
I worked with our (roving) hitting instructor, Ronnie Ortegon and with Ryan Jackson our (Mudcats) hitting coach on just my timing. During spring training Ronnie kept telling me that my timing was late. You are not getting your foot down in time so finally he told me just to go way earlier than I thought I had to. Well it was probably with three or four days left in spring training that I started getting my foot down in time and all of a sudden I was just starting to see the off-speed pitches. My biggest problem with strike-outs for sure was right-handers, sliders away and because that I am seeing the ball better now I am able to lay off that pitch a lot more. The biggest thing is just my timing, getting my foot down in time to see the ball. Obviously when you see the ball you’ve got a better chance, hitting the ball and taking more pitches that are not strikes.

Like that Dusty said
that he’s confident Burton will get it on track, and it’s only a temporary situation. Also hopeful since he’s talking like as soon as EdE comes back, he’s the starting 3B.
