SIS - Best sequels

I havent put one of these up for a while but Im getting tired of banging the same drum beat for the Reds and their lack of offense. I need a bit of a tension breaker.  I noticed in USA Today a little piece on Sequels that wound up being better than the original film. I remember seeing The Empire Strikes Back and not being impressed with it immediately afterwards (hey, i was like 10) but now its easy to judge it superior to the original Star Wars, imho.   I have a few others that I could make cases for but im going to leave the heavy lifting to RR Nation.

What say you, which other sequels are better?

I'm going to have to nominate The Neverending Story II: The Next Chapter ESPECIALLY considering it was paired with the supremely underrated Bugs Bunny short "Box Office Bunny".

Seeing as how I don't have a Sigourney Weaver shrine in my bedroom...

Dude, I was like 10 years old when I saw the sequel for the first time. A freaking walking Statue of Liberty!? The Titanic with a ginormous hole in the side!? Classic dailogue like “What was chasing you in the park? The park bench was chasing you!?” …I fell in love with it the first time I saw it and love it to this day.

I loved it when I first saw it...thought it was the best thing I'd seen since 'A Day at the Races"

Then the fabulous Mrs. M. and I introduced the movie to our kids..
they literally loved it so much that they had it mostly memorized and would reference it all the time among our family…and oft times when other were around the jokes went over many adults heads.

Please don't make me raise my voice...

Both films are excellent..but A Day at the Races is one of the most surreal and artistic charades of all times…

Now everyone knows that A Night at the Opera and Duck Soup are fan favorites and are included in a lot of prestigious Top Twenty Films of all time lists. .Their films progressed movie by movie starting from a vaudevillian approach and developing all the way to surrealism : The Cocoanuts (1926) and Animal Crackers (1930), really set the stage for the next three classics:
Monkey Business (1931), Horse Feathers (1932), Duck Soup (1933), All slapstick master pieces….
The next two films, A Night at the Opera (1935), A Day at the Races (1937), were produced at MGM and had the afore mentioned
sense of surrealistic hostility combined with existential humor. Both were bigger budget films and it showed.

Room Service (1938), was released by RKO Radio Pictures, returned to a more vaudevillian format and At the Circus (1939), MGM
and Go West (1940), by MGM, were lackluster at best.

The final four Marx Brother’s movies were tired and at time almost bitter
The Big Store (1941), MGM, A Night in Casablanca (1946), released by United Artists, * Love Happy (1949), released by United Artists and The Story of Mankind (1957), released by Warner Brothers – And although every Marx Brother’s film has its moments these efforts – well we coulda done without..

Groucho Marx maintained that the two movies made with Irving Thalberg at MGM (A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races) were the best that they ever produced, citing that their stronger story lines and more structured format allowed for more pointed social, political and satirical humor. As the Brothers played off of each other and were at times difficult to reign in, these two films ( which can be looked at as similar to late 1950’s and early 1960’s jazz played by Miles Davis with Coltrane, Cannoball Adderly, Gil Evans, JoJo White and later Bill Evans – The Kind Of Blue style): were formatted to allowed a tremendous amount of dynamic improvisation and interaction ultimately superior to the open ended slapstick of their Vaudeville Show and early movies.

I agree with Groucho..and though the random rag-tag – vaudevillian Duck Soup is hilarious – I vote for A Day at the Races (followed closely by A Night at the Opera) as their finest shining moments featuring the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur (3 elements which tie together their entire body of work). Geez this sounds a like like my life,,,,,,

As shown in this picture from Room Service

Clap, clap, clap

Well said sir. However, I still must protest.

I, for one, love the vaudevillian nature of the Marx Bros. (which is probably why I love Conan O’Brien so much) above everything else — this includes the social commentary, the snappy dialogue and the Kafka-esque nature of most of their films.

For me, the Marx Brothers represent a different time, a different place and a different culture. All of which are uniquely American but also distinctly ‘other.’ Also, in spite of all that, their films still seem fresh. And I think, more so than in any other film, ‘Duck Soup’ showcases that.

But above all, I believe it’s the most polished satirical piece on war and politics ever made — in any artistic format. Ever.

Remember, you’re fighting for this woman’s honor, which is probably more than she ever did.

For me, that’s the defining quote of Duck Soup, and in many ways, every Marx Bros. comedy. It hits so many angles at once — yes, it’s funny at face value, but dig deeper and you realize Groucho’s just smacked the world’s political structure squaw in the nuts. Even to this day, that line resonates and holds true. Truer than most anything else written in the past century.

So, Mads, I still must respectfully disagree. I love all the Marx Bros. films, but Duck Soup, for me, is their opus.

clerks 2 gets worse every time i watch it

somehow, rosario dawson is a worse actor than those SAG clowns who play randall and dante. she goes a long way in trying to ruin it for me. and the love triangle in clerks 2 seems really forced.

but the presence of elias saves the movie, and his interaction with randall is better than anything in all of clerks. plus theres a donkey show.

i guess what im saying is i like clerks 2 slightly better, but i think those are two of kevin smith’s worst movies.

As Than brought up Clerks and Clerks 2 … do others consider all the ViewAskewniverse stuff as semi sequels? What about some of the early Tarantino flicks in which characters (or names) are referenced from other movies?

You, sir, have never seen Daredevil or any 'Punisher' film, especially the one staring Dolph Lundgren.

And don’t forget Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., starring, yes, David Hasselhoff

Yes, that last one was made-for TV, but still, terrible.

But for whatever reason I watch it if it’s on tv. Damn you Colin Farrell. “More peanuts, please.”

Colin Farrell's portrayal of Bullseye is the only aspect of that film that I liked.

The only.

Also, I refused to see Elektra. That looked like a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGE pile of crap.

desperado

i liked it better than el mariachi, which i just remember as a cheap mexican shoot-em-up. desperado is superior in that it was an expensive mexican shoot-em-up with selma hayek.

the new star wars movies got better as they went on, i think. phantom menace was essentially a silly kids movie, attack of the clones was ok, i suppose, and the third one wasnt bad.

i agree with jmgard about xmen 2 and dark knight, but i didnt find anything appealing in any of the spiderman movies, so thats a wash for me.

On a slightly different note...

Is it really necessary that there be remakes of movies like “Footloose” and “Fame” and whatever-else-is-in-the-works? Are there no more ideas out there? Meh.

Ace Ventura 2

I’m not saying it’s better than the original; it’s certainly less iconic. I just like it better.

Why the dislike?

I disagree, obviously, but I’m wondering where the critique is

by Cy Schourek on Jun 18, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was a style piece

that stole all of it’s style from other films and added nothing new. I understand the desire to crib from Wes Anderson visually, but Johnson actually uses the iconic Rushmore retro eye goggles TWICE. (Not to mention gratuitous use of Cat Stevens and Nashville period Dylan).

Other than that, there was no narrative drive, even with a pretty clear structure laid out by the characters themselves (which Johnson still managed to fuck up). Even the use of titles as chapter markers didn’t always actually correspond to what was happening during those chapters.

My critique: Mark Ruffalo was the interesting character in the film, but it focuses all its energy on the standard-issue, boring-ass “angst” of Adrien Brody, who, lets face it, sucks. It’s not his fault that his god-given looks limit his range from melancholy to wistfully melancholy, but he’s just saps the comic energy out of everything he’s in. His character should have been axed. Give me Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz involved in some sort of scheme. I’m agnostic on the pixie-ish Japanese chick.

I wanted to like Brothers Bloom because I thought Brick was pretty cool, even if it didn’t quite work. But it was just totally disappointing

Well taken

I really liked Brick and it could easily be argued that I just willed myself into liking Brothers Bloom. I thought that, as Brick was a take-up on Film Noir, Brothers Bloom was a take-up on Indie Films (there’s a Slate article somewhere on how “Indy” is a genre now, and Wes Anderson has a lot to do with it).

Basically, three-piece suits and Panerai watches are pretty kick ass. I thought the movie did a good job not taking itself too seriously, and just being a riff on indy films with Adrien Brody playing, well, Adrien Brody.

I thought it was all good fun until the last 20 minutes, when it looked like someone in post-production tried to make it into a Serious Movie. No, you don’t have bad guys dressed like Diamond Dog in Serious Movies. As a summer comedy, it was really cute and self-referential: an indy film’s indy film. That’s the way I’ll remember it.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go watch the Cardinals lose to a pitcher that’s younger than me.

Both pale in comparison to the original of course, but I figured this might count.

It sounds like they are trying to cast some hot up-and-coming actors from the Middle and Far Easts to play some key roles.
