W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - John Lannan 3-5 3.68 1.44 36 29

Today is the day you've had marked on your calendar since since August 11th of last season.  Today is the day we get to see once and for all who got the better of the Adam Dunn for Micah Owings trade.  Barring some lineup snafu, these two should face each other a couple of times today.  The winner gets bragging rights FOREVER!

John Lannan has actually pitched fairly well this year, but has seen the Nationals go just 3-9 in his 12 starts.  He walks quite a few batters and doesn't strike out many, but he's managed to post an ERA under 4 for the season, so he's doing something right, even if he's just being lucky.  His luck doesn't carry over to his record though as he's been done in a couple of times by his bullpen and a couple of times by lack of run support.  He's sort of like the Aaron Harang of the Nationals.

Owings hasn't exactly been consistent this season, but then what else would you expect from a 5th starter?  He's currently riding a personal 4-game losing streak, but honestly he's only pitched poorly in 2 of those starts.  The big problem for him, as it is with all of the Reds pitchers, is that he can't bend too far without breaking because the offense leaves him no real room for error.  Hopefully today will be different and we'll see some action with the bats for once from the Reds.

The game is at 4:30 today, for some reason.  It's not on local TV, but I'm guessing you can catch it on MLB.tv if you have the option.  Otherwise, just tune in to Marty and Jeff and hope for the best.  Oh, and there is rain in the DC area again today.

Hanigan has gone 2 for 7 with two walks against the Nationals...

but he has to sit today so that Rosales can play. The lineup from Fya:

Hairston Jr. 5
Taveras 8
Phillips 4
Gomes 7
Hernandez 2
Bruce 9
Gonzalez 6
Rosales 3
Owings 1

Does Dusty ever actually make sense?

From Fya:

LINEUP CHANGE: Ryan Hanigan was out of the lineup Thursday. Ramon Hernandez was back at catcher and Adam Rosales played first.

Hanigan caught all 12 innings last night in a game that ended nearly 1 a.m.

"Plus Rosales hadn’t played in a couple days," Dusty Baker said, "and Ramon and Micah (Owings) work well together. He’s pitched better than his record. We want to give him a chance to win."

Let's talk about this for a second.

The Brewers can hit, but have only one good starting pitcher (Gallardo). How long can that hold up? Their offense, last I looked (which was a week+ ago) is not that much better than ours statistically.

The Cardinals have Carpenter, who will win games till he gets hurt again, and hit-or-miss guys throughout the rest of the rotation, awful infield defense, and a bad bullpen. Their lineup is incredibly inconsistent this year, even Pujols is slumping more than usual so far.

The Cubs are injured and just generally not producing very well this year and look to be a .500 team so far.

The Astros and Pirates are bad.

Who will be least bad? If the Reds continue to get pitching (which is fairly likely), and Votto and Encarnacion produce as we expect them to (assuming they play a lot of the rest of the year) and Bruce gets his average up to .250 by year’s end, (and they acquire a big RH Bat) could it be them? Or am I being too homerish.

by jsl413 on Jun 11, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if we can count on Edwin for anything

All four teams have as good a chance at pulling it out. You can also include Pittsburgh if you’re feeling saucy. They’ve scored as many as they’ve allowed so they really should be right there.

by Red Menace on Jun 11, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you're being too homerish

Your premise is basically that the good things for the other teams won’t continue and the bad things will, while the opposite is true for the Reds. Seems pretty homerish.

The Brewers actually have 1 good starter, 2 decent starters, and Suppan + Parra. And I disagree that their bullpen is overperforming. Obviously Hoffman’s not going to go scoreless all year, but McClung is the only pitcher whose ERA is way over his peripherals. On the other hand, Villanueva’s ERA is much higher than it should be.

And the Cubs are going to make a run some time this summer. They’ve got too much talent to not do it. I’m not saying they are going to win the division, but they are the only team in the division that has both good pitching and hitting, though they’ve been hurt and underperformed. If that changes at all, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 15-5 type run out of them.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say about Reyes

actually i'm here with my dad

so i’m not really enjoying the night life, as i would if i were here with friends. I just feel awkward going out to a club or bar with my dad, so yeah, no night life.

not that i'm complaining

i’m glad i can do this with him, this is his first time overseas, and it has been a great time, just different than when i went to italy and china on college marching band trips, or cuba as a study abroad with 8 other american students.

The Astros are on their sixth.

78 pitches for Owings already

Anyone else think that if Maloney does well on his next try or two he might be able to keep a starting job and Owings moves to the Pen?

by wishfuldrifter on Jun 11, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's a good question

As far as a #5 starter is concerned, he’s not bad… but if Maloney may be a bit better… then again he could utterly suck his next time out

i'm thinking if maloney does well in his next few starts

it may be a while before we see Volquez, as they may choose to be more cautious with their bullet throwing young right hander, and not feel pressured to bring him back.

Me too.

See you down there! And if anyone else wants to meet up, we’re at Bard’s Burgers in Latonia. Come down, we’re probably the belligerent group cheering on the guy eating the enormous burger.

You know we're going to see Lincoln today

It’s getaway day. Dusty is in no mood to try to win a baseball game.
