MLB Draft - Day 3 Open Thread

Sulbaran_medium

The Reds picked up stud pitching prospect J.C. Sulbaran with a 30th round pick last year.  Which late rounders this year will be the toast of Reds country?  Another guy the Reds took in the later rounds last year?

Here's the 49th rounder:

Pat_20white_6__medium

Yep, that's WV quarterback/utility player Pat White.  It just goes to show that you never know what might happen in the later rounds of the draft.  Rounds 31-50 roll out today, with the action kicking off around 11:30.  Hopefully TT will be around to drop some knowledge about the picks, and I'll try to at least announce who the Reds are picking if he's not around.  If you missed his excellent reports from yesterday, you can find them here.

Hey BK and Reds fans everywhere.

Or at least Reds fans here. I should be around a lot today, if you aren’t tired of me. Here’s hoping the Reds unearth some gems today.

Tired of you? Never!

You, Doug, and Kyle are invaluable with this stuff. Thanks to all of you!

That's 32, actually

31 was Adian Kummet, RHP, St. Scholastica. Anything on him?

Carlson is said to be smooth

turning the double play. The Reds drafted his DP partner Matt Valaika yesterday.

I'm rec'ing all of TT's knowledge drops so it's easier to find the info

If others could do so as well, it’s easier to find them when everything’s green. Just check out the Day 2 thread.

Stramp is a high-character guy.

He fielded just .933 last season, but has been better in the past. He played for his dad at Keller HS.

67.50 ERA

is that good?

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

Nearly off the charts.

Could have been a mid-rotation starter on the Reds 1982 club.

You're a round behind, man

Oops. I am.

The Mrs. brought me a sandwich. I’ll catch up on Adian Kummet in a minute.

Apparently it's a junior college.

Santos is 6-foot, 182 and a sophomore. He is a native of Santo Domingo, D.R. A RHH, he batted .453 with 45 RBI this season. He hit in the middle of the order and also played in the Coastal Plains Summer League.

Chris Burleson-SS-Southern Maine.

He’s 5-11, 185 and a senior. For his career he went 25-139-.350 with 72 stolen bases.

so, he'll fit right in

hangin’ with Laynce.

Day 4, we’ll be drafting all the extra Y’s, so the equipment manager can make enough jerseys.

A walk-on, Nurre turned down a scholarship from Dayton

to sign with Miami. He played little his first two seasons, but showed a willingness to play anywhere. He has outstanding makeup. He says he’ll need decent money to sign, as he already has a job lined up in the insurance business.

Barton has toured with the Canadian Junior Team,

playing in Florida and in the Dominican. He has performed fine against older competition. He is said to be a hard-working, blue collar guy and a great teammate. He has started and relieved.

Barton

Barton actually topped out at 92 this spring. Doesn’t work there, but like you noted, has the potential to go higher and work closer to where he is topping out at now. I really liked what I saw in his offspeed stuff. I hope the Reds pay this kid.

by dougdirt on Jun 11, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks.

Seems like a fresh-armed kid. The Reds have worked Canada pretty well the last three years.

I’d love to hear your take on the draft, Doug. You and I usually are pretty close, but I’ll be we differ enough to make some analysis fun. You do great work.

Carson went 3-4 4.44.

Maybe if he consentrates on pitching full time, that will help.

Bowen began the season as Mississippi State's ace.

He got a serious case of the yips and couldn’t find the strike zone. By SEC tournament time, he was holding a clipboard, charting pitches. Bowen has had success, going 3-3 with a 3.53 ERA last year in the Cape Cod League.

The Yankees just drafted Pat White.

Yep, that Pat White, the guy who played QB at WVU and now for the Dolphins. The Reds drafted him last year. The Angels took him out of high school.
