MLB Draft - Day 2 Open Thread
Mike Leake was the Reds 2009 First Round pick. Hopefully he'll have more success than most of the pitchers the Reds have taken in the first round in the past. That's not asking for a lot, I know.
We'll do the 2nd day of the draft over here in the fanposts so that the thread doesn't get buried under the day's activities. Hopefully Thundering Turtle will be along to drop some knowledge for those of us who aren't so smart in the ways of amateur baseball.
You can catch up with yesterday's activity here.

Boxberger
Everything I’ve read about Boxberger says he’ll be forced to the bullpen if he can’t improve his control. Does that line up with your opinion/what you’ve seen?
by D-Rock on Jun 10, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes, pretty much.
As the season progressed, however, the bullpen talk began to subside as Boxberger looked more like a starter. I’m not big on selecting RP high in the draft and the Reds might well have taken two in their first four picks in Boxberger and Donnie Joseph.

Well, I guess that may be half right
It looks like he’s been part of a “catching tandem” with Tim Federowicz (according to his bio on UNC’s site), and DHing some too, so hopefully we’ll see him in at least one of those capacities.

Fleury briings a solid LH bat
and catch-and-throw skills. A first-year starter, he threw out 33 percent of attempted base stealers this season while handling a top-level pitching staff. Fleury wioll take a walk. He’s patient and has some power. Although Fleury lacks a standout tool, he is a sound all-around player who was impressive in the Cape Cod League.
Scouts report Fleury is a real leader and handles pitching staffs well. His arm is at least solid average, probably a tick above.

More on Fleury:
He is 6-1, 202 pounds, 21 and from Marietta, Ga. He is a Braves fan, or was until today. His dad played SS at Cornell.
Fleury posted a line of 12-59-.315 .404 .578. He struck out 63 times and walked 37. He had a very strong .991 fielding percentage.

Tuttle is a bit of a project, but could be worth it.
He signed to play SS and pitch at North Carolina State. He is 6-2, 195 and is considered signable. Tuttle had a significant jump in velocity this spring, consistently throwing 90-93 and often 95-95. He has reached 97. Tuttle offers a sweepy, sinking slider that is very promising. His curve is slow and below average. His change is below average, too.
We Are ... Marshall!
by Thundering Turtle on Jun 10, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions 3 recs
Tuttle's delivery needs work.
He throws across his body, causing his command to be inconsistent. He lands on a stiff front leg, sometimes forcing pitches up. Pro coaching should remedy those problems. If he delevops a change, he could be a terrific pick.

Serrano is a second-team All-American
and the player and pitcher of the year in the Summit League. He is 6-1, 195 and a senior, so should be an easy sign.
His line was 9-1, 2.50 ERA. 86 1/3 IP, 132 K, 25 BB, .196 BAA. His 13.77 Ks per game ranked second nationally. Serrano appeared in 20 games, making nine starts. He was good against strong competition, throwing well against Arkansas, Arizona State, Rice and Wichita State. He is intelligent and a transfer from Cypress JC.

Fellhauer is a junior, 21 and hits and throws LH.
He is compared to Lenny Dykstra because of his size and abilities. He is the best player on a very good CSFU team. Fellhauer plays gold glove defense, can come in or go back on balls, features excellent speed and range and has a strong, accurate arm.
Fellhauer batted .299 on the 2008 National Team. His grandpa played for the St. Louis Browns and his dad was drafted by the A’s. Fellhauer is a line drive hitter with little power, but has a quick bat. At worst he figures to be a foourth OF, but could very well be a starting CF even on a championship club.

From BA's draft blog:
A pair of versatile, athletic college center fielders went back-to-back at picks No. 209 and 210. First the Reds took Cal State Fullerton star Josh Fellhauer, and the Tigers followed by popping Oklahoma’s Jamie Johnson with the next pick. Both of these guys are outstanding baseball players with good speed, the ability to make consistent contact and excellent baseball instincts. Both were available in the seventh round because both are sub-six-footers, but both could wind up being steals.

Size mainly.
Some scouts profile him as a fourth OF. Even if he is, that’s not bad for the seventh round. He could try to improve his stock and come back as a senior, so there might be a signing issue. I haven’t heard that, though.

Another BA Top 200 guy,
Pearl is the top prospect in Washington. A converted 3B, this was Pearl’s first year of pitching full time. He profiles as a reliever. His inconsistenty drove scouts mad. Some days Pearl threw 93-94, while others he dipped to the upper 80s.
Pearl has a promising fastball and a slider that at times has shown great potential. He adjusts well, has a fresh arm and is durable.

Barnhart could be a tough sign.
He has signed at Georgia Tech and figured to go as high as the fourth round. Tenth-round money probably won’t do it, so the Reds likely would have to go over slot. He is from the same HS that produced supplemental first rounder Lance Lynn in 2005 and Drew Storen a first rounder this year.
Barnhart hits well from either side of the plate and shows power from the left side. He is 5-10, 180, a fact that bothers some scouts who don’t project him to get much bigger. Others are fine with that and project him to be a regular at the MLB level. Barnhart is athletic and moves well behind the plate, although his speed is below average. His arm is solid and his hands are good enough for a move to 2B. He is a hard worker and is intelligent.

At least a significant one.
Tuttle might go over, but appears signable within reason. Silva might want a little more than slot. Barnhart, though, will be expensive to buy out of Georgia Tech. Tenth rounders last year got between $75,000 and $100,000 for most, but as much as $600,000.

He’s probably a tough sign, as he has signed with Wake Forest. So much for all the little guys. Johnson is a thick 6-3, 230. He throws an 89-91 mph fastball and uses his legs well. More velocity is projected. His slider could be quite good. His curve needs work. Johnson features OK command.

Christiani is a 6-foot, 180-pound senior.
He consistently throws in the low 90s, but also consistently gets hit. He features a decent slider and change, so potential is there. Christiani throws strikes, sometimes maybe too many. A native of Linden, N.J., he starred for powerhouse Seton Hall Prep and was the 128th-ranked prospect in the nation as a HS senior.
Christiani went 6-6 with a 5.00 ERA this season. In 18 G, 11 starts, he had 1 CG and 1 SHO. He threw 68 innings, allowing 76 hits, a .281 BAA, struck out 69 and walking 19. He was better his three previous years but never stellar, although he was tough in the Cape Cod League.

Marrero is the brother of Nationals' prospect Chris Marrero.
Deven is regarded as a better all-around player, which says something as Chris was a first-rounder. Baseball America rates Marrero as the 123rd-best overall player in the country, high school or college.
Marrero (6-1, 180) easily can remain at SS, where he is silky smooth with the glove. His hands are above average and his arm is plus. He is regarded by scouts as “a baseball player.” Marrero isn’t a stellar hitter at present but projects well. His swing can get long, but it also projects for some power.
Marrero’s line was 8-25-.400. In 110 AB, he had 44 hits, scored 33 runshad six doubles and stole eight bases. He has a strong inclination to play at Arizona State, where he likely would start right away. That means he’ll need big money to sign.

Another Florida stud SS. Maybe the Reds will play them off one another to try to get one to sign. More to come.

No. 112 on BA's Top 200,
Perez is a better present hitter than is Marrero, but doesn’t have Marrero’s glove. Still, Perez is quite good defensively and features a 60 arm on the 20-80 scale, so he could stay at SS. He also is capable at 2B, so maybe the Reds just drafted their future MIF.
Perez (5-10, 165) has signed at Miami. He’s a smart player and has surprising pop from each side of the plate. That sometimes works against him, as he often tries to hit home runs rather than use the whole field. He isn’t expected to get a lot bigger and is a fringe-average runner.
Perez went 8-22-.452 this season, with 43 runs and 38 hits in 84 AB. He had 5 doubles, 1 triple and 34 stolen bases.

Valaika isn't the prospect that his brother is,
but he swings a nice bat. He led UCSB with a .343 average this season. A 5-10, 190-pound infielder, he went 6-45-.343 .411 .545 with 16 doubles, one triple and one stolen base in two attempts. A junior, he might opt to return for his senior season and improve his draft prospects next year.

He pitched very little this season after having surgery to remove calcium deposits in his elbow. He played 3B and hit .400, but his future is on the mound. He’s a Tennessee signee and likely will wear orange instead of red this fall.

out of high school in St. Louis. He was regarded as the best HS player in Missouri in 2007. He transferred to Grayson County CC, where his left-handed power has flourished. He’s strong and has leverage in his swing. He plays the OF, but is better suited for 1B. He has a strong arm, though, having hit 90 on the radar gun.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Jun 10, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Most Canadian baseballers are from around
Vancouver or just across from Niagara Falls. Monster is from 200 miles northeast of Vancouver in an area that doesn’t get much exposure. He was one year too old for the Canadian national team last season and is somewhat inexperienced. He does, however, have an arm. He pumps heavy 89-92 fastballs and scouts anticipate even more velocity. Monster goes all-out all the time, meaning he doesn;t pace himself and runs out of gas. If he doesn’t fix that, he’s destined for the bullpen.

Manz helped Chipola to a juco national championship

Poppert is an offense-first
shortstop and might move to 2B as a pro. A wiry 6-1, 190, Poppert hit well in the Cape Cod League, batting .288. This year for the Dons he went 1-52-.352 .416 .461. He was 16-for-19 in stolen base attempts. Popperts walked 24 times and struck out just 14. His 22 errors and .919 fielding percentage, however, suggest a move off shortstop.

A senior, Braun holds almost all of Corban's
pitching records. This season the 6-5, 190-pound senior was 2-8 with a 3.46 ERA. In 78 IP, he allowed 79 hits, struck out 61 and walked 25. Opponents batted .254. Braun is a high-character individual and is very athletic. He played three years of college basketball. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot and features a slider and a splitter. He didn;t face stiff competition often and when he did — NAIA power Lewis & Clark State — he lost all three times. Braun didn’t play summer ball, which led some scouts to question his dedication and others to like him for his fresh arm.

A 5-11, 190-pounder,
Gonzalez is from Cidra, P.R. He batted .429 with 47 RBI last season and has good speed for a catcher, as his three triples showed. Whether he remains behind the plate is to be seen, but he has enough talent to play the middle IF if need be.

Wrapping up, the Reds potentially had a very good day.
Perez and Marrero are excellent selections. If either signs, it will be a coup. If Cincinnati gets them both, this draft looks very good. Fellhauer is a terrific pick, too, and Tuttle shows great potential.
Yes, there are roster filler guys, but I’m thrilled to see the Reds take a chance on some high-profile middle of the diamond guys.
