Game 49, Thread 2: Hush child, Yovani Gallardo can't strike you out any more

Yovani Gallardo was kicking our ass (9 strikeouts in 5.1 innings), but now he's gone.  Begin the comeback!

Guys?  The comback?  You gonna begin it?  Any time now...

The Reds can still strike out against Mitch Stetter, apparently

And wow Cherry, two of those pitches were WAY out of the zone.

They looked good. Damnit!

That’s referred to as swinging out of your shoes. He’s trying to hit another home run.

by ol Pete on May 31, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He's been doing it for 3 weeks.

Rarely before in his career, or even before in this season. Hell, even I’ve only done that once in my life. You never see other MLB hitters doing that.

by jsl413 on May 31, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Its not all that rare

Ty Wiggington had a great one last season where he ended up on his back.

by ol Pete on May 31, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Wiggninton isn't that bad I guess.

Oh well. I give up. He needs to stop falling down.

by jsl413 on May 31, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying you're wrong

but isn’t he both hitting more home runs and raising his average?

by ol Pete on May 31, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

There was one

did he hit a grand slam recently or a walk off? Anyway, the MLB network guys loved it and showed it a bunch of times.

i just realized that the reason they called it SPECTRE in James Bond

is because that’s the term used in the opening line of the communist manifesto.

that was crap. even though he went, it was still crap.

I never heard the thing about the manifesto. I’m not sure I buy it.

by ol Pete on May 31, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

the first line of the communist manifesto is this:

“A spectre is haunting Europe — the spectre of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies.”

its pretty simple

when Votto and Bruce go, so does the team.

otherwise its gonna be a lot of L’s.

I don't think these are games we can expect to win

Arguably our two best slugging hitters are on the DL, it’s a 1 vs. 5 starter and the best-hitting team in our division. The last two loses were far more frustrating.

Masset --> starting rotation

Owings to the pen, Burton and Lincoln should be sent packing.

agree'd on burton and lincoln

i’m not sure we want to mess with masset since we have a good thing going there. owings really hasn’t been that bad as a starter – remember, he’s our number five. i know we’re spoiled by having three number one type guys and bronson, but if i’m not mistaken, owings is about league avg, isn’t he? i mean for a number five guy? or actually, a number four guy?

by Daedalus on May 31, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if I buy Masset in the starting rotation

He’s like Jeremy Affeldt in my mind. Someone who could start, but who has really excelled out of the bullpen, and I’m not sure there’s a need to mess with that. Also, Owings’s bat is much more deployable if he’s not in the ’pen.

by Brendanukkah on May 31, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love to see what he could do in a spot start

You might be right, but I think it’s worth a try.

Also, I don’t think Burton’s as bad as he’s been but he has options. Not sure who would come up in the somewhat unlikely even that both Lincoln and Burton were off the 25 man

did fisher get sent down when masset came back

because he should be up here right now. he did really well. he deserves a chance.

by Daedalus on May 31, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he was still around at least until Volquez was activated

in which case I was hoping against hope that Burton would be sent down.

I guess Owings really wasn't that bad today against

a really hot team. 2 runs is really sad especially when Gallardo doesn’t even go 6IP.
