“We go on the road with some momentum,” Bruce said. “We plan on coming back in first place.”
- Injury updates: The rain yesterday kept the teams from taking infield and batting practice. Brandon Phillips and Edwin Encarnacion were particularly frustrated by this, as BP was supposed to engage in full pre-game activities and EdE was supposed to take ground balls for the first time since he went on the DL with a chipped bone in his wrist.
Fay says EdE will take full batting practice in a few days and if all goes well, he will then be sent out for a rehab assignment. So perhaps we'll see him back sometime in mid-June?
Phillips did take some ground balls from Billy Hatcher early in the afternoon and looked just fine. He should be back tomorrow in Milwaukee. Edinson Volquez threw a full bullpen session and felt great. He'll come off the DL on Monday and start against the Cardinals. - Randy in Chattanooga, a friend of RML, had a chance to sit down with Carolina Mudcats lefty Travis Wood the other day after his 7 innings of shutout ball against the Lookouts. He worked out with Cy Young winner and fellow Arkansas native Cliff Lee over the winter. Looks like it has helped him.
- Danny Herrera is a Pitch F/X Idol. THT takes a look at Pitch F/X and change ups and both Danny Herrera and David Weathers show up.
- Jeff at Redlegs Rundown asks who you think has been the best of Walt Jocketty's offseason additions so far. He makes the case for Ramon Hernandez and Arthur Rhodes, but Willy Taveras and Laynce Nix could be right up there as well (he also mentions Owings, but he was technically aquired last season). What do you think?
- NL Central News
Carlos Zambrano threw a fit after a close call at the plate where Nyjer Morgan apparently slid around his tag for the tying run. Carlos blew a gasket or two, hurling the ball into left field. "I was kind of disappointed," Reed Johnson said. "I thought it was going to go up into the stands. The wind was blowing in today." Zambrano could get suspended for 10 games.
Pirates closer Matt Capps took a line drive off his pitching elbow a few days ago, but lucky for him it didnt do much damage. He said, "If you'd told me Monday I could pitch by the coming weekend, I'd have said you were nuts."
Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle is calling for manager Cecil Cooper's head. Clack at CFB points out that Justice was in favor of the contract extension Cooper just received two months ago. Man, it must suck to be a 'stros fan right now.
The Brewers have scored 12 runs in their last 6 games. Hopefully our pitching can keep it up and keep their hitting down.
Bernie Miklasz thinks the Cardinals are going to need to make some moves this summer to stay in the race, but he's skeptical that enough will happen.

That Zambrano fit was ridiculous
he doesn’t need a suspension, he needs to go into timeout like the little baby that he is.

Zambrano is a big baby.
But that umpire should have turned around and walked away instead of going face-to-face with a raging-mad player (whose ejection very well could turn the game). That ump stepped toward CZ a lot of times. That’s an ump confrontational for no reason. Let CZ walk after you a bit until the coaches pull him away. The ump doesn’t need to argue the call with CZ, he can just let him rant.
15G suspension for Carlos – 15G in AAA for the ump.

zambrano shoulda been ejected
in no other sport can a player react like that to a call and have a prayer of remaining in the game. Zambrano did get in his face.

This is a recent development
And Angel Hernandez is the worst. The best official in any sport is one who knows they’re in charge and don’t feel the need to confront players.

So true
I am so tired of umpires who feel the need to be respected. Guess what? What you say goes, whether someone respects you or not is of no consequence. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing a dude get tossed for not picking up his bat, or a ball get called a strike just because the batter headed for first, or vice versa because the pitcher took a step toward the dugout.
Nobody ever bought a ticket to a baseball game to watch a fucking umpire, except maybe his mom.

THIS
The umpires today want to be respected so badly, and they don’t get it. As an umpire or official in any sport you don’t “earn” respect by showing your manhood in an argument. You are already the authority figure and should act as such.

FWIW
He Who Shall Not Be Named (a former pitcher, then a YES announcer, now with the MLB Network) says it’s the young/new umpires you really have to watch out for. They’re the ones who feel the need to establish their authority, and they tend to have a quick hook, compared to veterans.

JONNY GOMES!
Actually, I’m incredibly surprised at how well all of the new guys are playing. I wasn’t expecting much from any of them, and they’ve all played great. Couple that with big years from guys like Jerry Hairston, David Weathers, Francisco Cordero, and our awesome starting pitching and BAM! Six games over .500.

this right here, today, is a very important day for me
today is the day i submit my mea culpa for all the Hairston bashing i did all last season and through the off-season. he’s been great. his .352 wOBA is downright Bruce-like (.362) and he’s been great in the field everywhere he’s been asked to play. i still dont think this is a sustainable level of offense from him (he’s slugging .481) but he’s been worth every single penny of that measly 2 mil he signed for. so im sorry Jerry. i shoulda believed in you more.

How soon do we forget the Bako/Ross/Valentin mess? I think that Hernanigans have been a bit too heavily weighted on the former, but if Ramon can keep this up for ~125 games then he’s an absolute steal. Stability out of the backstop is phenomenal. Erasing Freel f’real is even better.

if the Reds go 5-5 I would be happy. But they have a real chance to put some distance between themselves here. 10 games against all our division’s contenders. Is 7-3 possible?

best Walt move
Griffey for Masset. I believe the Reds/Sox split the remaining part of Griffey’s contract. So the Reds saved around 4 mill/ picked up a young arm with a live fastball/ removed from the roster a player that at this point in his career his barely at replacement level.
I still believe one of the worse moves will be the Taveras signing. Willie looks to me like Hopper but signed to a 2 year deal taking ABs away from Dickerson and potentially blocking Stubbs for a year.
by davidmac84 on May 28, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's why I like Ramon more than Taveras
They both have been outstandingly valuable at their positions, but there’s no guarantee that this is just a one year thing, if it even lasts the year. Hernandez isn’t tied to us next year (though he has an option for $8.5 million – yikes!), and as good as Taveras and Rhodes have been, who knows what that second year will look like.

I initially disliked the Taveras signing
because he appeared to be Hopper with a pedigree. But he seems to be superior to Hopper (though often by a narrow margin) in all facets of the game.

While I agree that Taveras should be running more
I really do not have a problem with Cherry bunting. His down the third base line special seems to get him a hit as often as an out.
While there is a lot of bunt-hating, and rightfully so, it should be noted that when fast people lay down bunts, it really does pressure the defense, and crazy things happen. We saw that scenario last night with the virus.

Interesting tidbit
From Hall o’ Famer Hal. Since his appearance in Toronto where he gave up 10 runs in 1 inning, Bronson has the most wins (18) of any pitcher in the majors, other than Roy Halladay (20). The dude’s a solid piece of the puzzle.
by Brendanukkah on May 28, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He's 18-7 with a 4.04 ERA since that start
What’s most amazing to me is that he’s only had 2 no decisions since then.
Of course, it also helps that he’s had 5.18 R/G in support in that span as well.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
by Slyde on May 28, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Last year I went to
an end of April game where Bronson went 3 innings 10 hits 8 runs- every pitch looked flat to the point where I was tempted to grab a bat and take my chances with putting one in play. I really thought he was done that we were headed towards Eric Milton chapter 2.
But Bronson has proved me wrong- and when you look at his periphal numbers he was actually pretty consistent from 2007 to 2008 with a stellar 2006 to start his Reds career. He has been a better than league average starter all 3 years with the Reds worth in excess of 30 million from 06-08 so it has been a real solid signing.
But if one of the AAA guys really got fire I still wouldnt mind trading Bronson. He’s coming into his expensive contract years- and I am still a little suspicous that in 2010 or 2011 he may fall down to Eric Milton levels if he loses a little velocity of his fastball.

i still dont think the reds should be ready to do this
Owings still has dubious potential. Volquez and Cueto are solid so far, but still need more seasoning.
Plus, it seems in general with pitchers that injuries always pop up. Huge ones sometimes too. If Owings, Cueto, and Volquez all have a solid 2009, then maybe you trade Bronson. But what could you get for him? I don’t know if the Reds could replace his value to the team right now.
by cokane on May 28, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if the reds are in contention
trading Arroyo doesnt make sense-unless you had 2 pitchers really dominating in AAA- and that doesnt seem to be in the cards this year.
If the Reds fall out of contention- I would definitely trade Bronson. If he keeps pitching in this range- he could bring value like the As got last year from the Phillies in Outman and Cardenas.
by davidmac84 on May 28, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think his high amount of decisions has something to do with his innings pitched
he tends to go deep into games garnering him a win or a loss, except when he is knocked out in the 2nd and has single handily lost the game for the reds.
