Bad news on Bray, Good News on Volquez, and no news on Votto

From the Excellent Reds Internal Affairs Blog by Reds Intern Jim Misudek:

LHP Bill Bray was examined today by Reds medical director Timothy Kremchek, who tomorrow will perform surgery on Bray's left elbow. Bray has been on Louisville's disabled list since April 16 with a strained left elbow.

Reds 1B Joey Votto became light-headed following yesterday's game at San Diego. Instead of flying home with the team, as a precautionary measure he was admitted for tests at Scripps Clinic at San Diego. He will be examined again in Cincinnati tomorrow. Votto missed 5 games last week with the flu and twice more left games with dizziness.

RHP Edinson Volquez today received treatment on his back without complaint. Volquez left Saturday's start with mild spasms in his mid-back. He is not expected to miss a start.

We knew about Bray, and it is encouraging Volquez won't miss a start.  The Joey Votto news is scaring the crap outta me.  Lets hope for some better news this time tomorrow.  Sounds like he must be a little bit better if they allowed him to fly back to Cincinnati today.  This team isn't the same wihout  #19 on the field.

Anyone with any medical knowledge of the flu followed by dizzyness?  Is it a common thing, or is this something different?  I hope it was the heat in AZ that got to him after the flu, and it's taking him longer to get over it.  Maybe some type of inner-ear infection?

I don't wanna be the one to say it, but...

I’ve had Votto’s symptoms in the same order as he’s had them, and the good doctor said “vertigo”.

Hope Joey V doesn’t have vertigo.

Vertigo is a symptom not a malady

There are a whole lot of possible causes.

by ol Pete on May 18, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Vertigo is treatable:

1. According to the American Academy of Neurology, the most effective treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) caused by ear crystals in the posterior semicircular canal, is a technique called the canalith repositioning procedure, or the Epley maneuver.

In this procedure, a physician or physical therapist assists the patient in performing a series of head and body movements, which move the calcium crystals out from the posterior semicircular canal and into another inner ear canal, where it is absorbed by the body. Another technique (called the Semont maneuver) also may be effective, but additional studies are needed.

2. Remove the tumor from the inner ear
3. Stop drinking ‘Old Grand Dad’
4. Biotech Homotoxology and Ayurveda combine to (in many cases) eradicate vertigo symptoms
5. REmove Alex Gonzales from the 40 man roster.

A little rest and recovery from the flu should do the trick for Votto.

Ok, so this is weird.

But I only recently learned that some people (white people) have goopy earwax. How do y’all deal with that?

Dude, I have that problem.

I have to get that shit flushed out every couple of years, even attempting to use the peroxide crap regularly on my own. It’s unpleasant.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

That's Racist!

And I don’t know, my earwax is rather flakey/gooey, never goopy. Sounds like it’d be a PIA.

I've heard that, too

Or rather, I’ve heard many Asians have a genetic mutation that results in dry ear wax.

I didn’t realize there were different kinds. I mean, it’s not the kind of thing that comes up in conversations.

Except here…

Wasn't there a Reds third baseman a good while back...

Had good power, struck out a good bit, played 3rd regularly for a couple years and then started having bouts of vertigo and was out of baseball within like a year? Better not come to that… ugh

Yep

I think you’re thinking of Nick Esasky.

I believe also that Joe Carter had it at one point in his career

And he played until he was close to 40.

Esasky was over rated and wasn’t really big into giving it his all — except when playing in Atlanta.

Yikes

No news sounds like bad news for Votto.

No diagnosis yet for Votto’s dizziness

Votto, who was out of the lineup again for Cincinnati’s series opener against Philadelphia, saw more doctors Tuesday, but declined to discuss his condition. All that is known is he has more doctor visits on the docket.

“Joey has undergone a series of tests at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego and here in Cincinnati, and we have more tests scheduled over the next few days,” Reds head trainer Mark Mann said in a statement released by the club. “After those additional tests, we will be more prepared to discuss the cause of his dizziness.”

In other words, no one knows yet why Votto has been dizzy.

To me, it sounds like they suspect, but don’t want to say anything until they’re sure.

And if it was just the flu or ear wax, they wouldn’t be doing more tests and keeping him from playing…would they?

Well he may be getting an MRI on his balancer bone.
