What the Reds should do about their rotation.
Owings' 5.2 innings of relief has put a huge wrench in the rotation. What scares me is the rotation that is currently listed at Reds.com. Yesterday it listed Owings as Tuesday's starter, now it lists Owings as Wednesday's starting pitcher. I hope that is just because they don't want to write TBA. Here is what the Reds should do.
Tuesday:Cueto
Wednesday: Harang
Thursday: Maloney
Friday: Arroyo
Saturday: Owings
I would like to give Owings an extra day of rest, and Thursday's game is 12:35 PM, and he threw his last pitch Sunday morning at about 3AM, so that isn't a typical four days rest. Cueto and Harang would remain on normal rest with my plan. Also calling up Maloney gives the Reds the opportunity to skip Volquez this time through the rotation, which I think would be a good idea, give his back plenty of time to rest. Maloney started Saturday, calling him up on Thursdays would allow him to pitch on his regular rest.
Roster Moves:
DL Masset now, don't start LeCure tonight, instead call him up, and let him sit in the bullpen Tuesday and Wednesday night. Demote Lecure on Thursday and call up Maloney, demote Maloney after Thursday's game and call up Fisher.
If the Reds follow my plan they will give Volquez some time to rest his back, and decrease the chances of him agravating it, they will give Owings plenty of rest, so his last apperance won't be drag on his arm for a period of time, and it won't negatively effect Cueto, Harang, or Arroyo as they would all be pitching on their regular rest. Plus calling up LeCure will give them some length in the bullpen Tuesday and Wednesday, and Fisher has earned the call and both pitchers are on the 40 man roster.

Hey, Brendan
Do you still think Alexander Ovechkin is better than Sidney Crosby?
Just wondering…
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Absolutely I do
And he did outperform Crosby for the series, but it was closer than I thought it would be.

Really?
That’s not what the puckheads around here think. They think Ovechkin was exposed as one-dimensional, while Crosby showed he’s good on defense as well as offense.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Crosby's good at sniping goals and cherry picking around the net
Ovechkin’s much better at creating his own shot. And hitting people. And not whining to the refs.

I'm with 'nukkah on this one
I don’t watch a ton of hockey but I’d pay to watch Ovechkin over Crosby any day.

I hope you’re ready to put your cat back under the basket to pull the Reds out of this slump.

How bout they just start Bronson Thursday on 3 day's rest like he is always pining for
and then either Volquez or Owings has 4 days rest and the other has extra rest and no starter-related roster moves are necessary.

I like this idea
If you’re gonna risk anyone’s arm, make it Bronson’s.
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....
why?
we have a number of arms down in AAA that could make a spot start.

Bronson loves to pitch on three days rest
Why would we use 3 call-ups, as Justin is suggesting, when one would suffice? If we would not even DL Gonzo and now Masset, what chance is there we would call up three guys in a week sequentially for the same spot? The current rotation as it stands, due to the off-day, can meet the workload.
But we do obviously need to DL Masset and call up a body. I am as frustrated as anyone else by the Reds continuing to play shorthanded. It is ridiculous to carry around hurt players on the roster. As RLN or whatever pointed out, it is already like we have a 24-man roster due to McDonald.
I think it is hilarious that Masset could be retroactively DLed and almost immediately available for return. That says a lot about the ineptitude of the organization. The thinking is probably: “we are getting good innings out of our starters and having trouble getting enough work for our relievers. Do we want to call up a guy and have him sit there and get no work?” But something like Saturday could happen anytime. Or the bullpen could work hard one night and the next day Bronson could come out and go 2/3 of an inning. They are idiots for keeping Masset on the roster.

Bronson just threw 120 pitches yesterday
and im not so sure Volquez will be able to go when we need him. i think instead of Justin’s musical chairs, we could just bring up LeCure to sit in the pen if needed, and then give him the start later in the week if needed. or it doesnt even have to be LeCure. we just need an extra arm that could pitch out of the pen now, and we’ll likely need an arm that can start a game later.

what is wrong with the roster musical chairs?
it doesn’t hurt anything long term, these guys are all on the 40 man roster so it won’t effect their options or service time, because there option for 2009 is already being used, LeCure can probably get major league hitters out in long relief, Matt Maloney has more than warranted the call, and so has Fisher, plus it will make sure Volquez is healthy, I would hate to see him re-aggravate this injury and have it linger for a while. If the Reds are up front with LeCure and Fisher and tell them it is just a few days it really won’t throw their lives in chaos as Louisville is just 100 miles away, and I’m sure these guys can room with somebody on the big club. It isn’t like the real old days when AAA was in Colorado.

Agreed and confirmed that Justin is a more creative thinker than Baker and Uncle Walt.
Never Try and Never, ever Care - That’s the Madville Way
i also think that it wouldn't be bad to get a minor league pitchers feet wet
in a situation like this, it is kinda low leverage because he isn’t really pitching for his big league job, because Maloney will know that if he gets knocked out in the 1st or throws a shutout his next start will be for Louisville.

well i guess it will effect their service time
in that Lecure would get 2 days service time, Maloney 1, and Fisher the balance until Masset gets back.

i dont think there is anything wrong with shuffling the rosters like that
i think its more reasonable to believe that the Reds would take a simpler tack in approaching this situation. and knowing their recent history, one could even more reasonably believe they wont do shit about it.

Walt is kinda worthless for day to day roster managment, not that Sweaterpants three catchers was great roster management.

I don't like Bronson :)

I also...
… don’t like Bronson Arroyo, but that doesn’t mean we should Narron/Boone/Baker him.
We need to save that arm so we can flip him sometime between middle of June and the July 31 Trade Deadline….

I was being flippant
I think Bronson’s valuable as a #4, and even more valuable if he can be turned into a power-hitting LF down the road.

Question
how do you attach pictures into the text of your posts? i know you use the tree icon somehow, but it never seems to work right for me….can anybody help a brother out?
HAVOC...your everyday solution to clogged bases
When you click on the tree icon, a window should pop up, asking you to enter the URL
Just cut and paste the URL for the picture you want to attach. You may need to have the picture on its own webpage, or host it on a site like Photobucket. If you do that, just use the direct link that it provides.
