I'd like to see some numbers on this

but he allows too many baserunners to be an effective jam-getter-outer. If Burton didn’t suck this year, this is the perfect place to use him, but I’d rather have just seen them go with Rhodes for more than what was basically an intentional walk.

im the biggest Micah rooter here

but putting him in cold against a closer who throws in the upper 90’s isnt the best game plan.

he hit a Ryan Franklin ball 10 ft over the fence. Remember Franklin? he’s not imtimidating..

but Adam has a .824 OPS this season, with 2 HR and almost a 10% walk rate.

Well

A) A double into the gap would’ve worked just fine there
B) You’re never going to convince me Rosie has more power than Owings
C) That was the first time Rosie’s been up with a game on the line, as Owings showed last weekend he can handle that situation.

by chesirecat on May 16, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

there were three very acceptable times to use owings

instead we got at bats from harang, dickerson, and rosales..

you may be in awe of rosales’s first fifteen games, but there is no doubt that owings is a better hitter than Harang or Dickerson

Use your best PH in your highest leverage situation

Blech

This game really put an ugly ass cloud over the Reds’ recent winning ways. Why can’t the Reds ever go to the West Coast and actually do something right?

yeah this is still at least a .500 west coast trip

i’ll take it.

Against Arizona and San Diego?

Fuck that, if this team is actually any good, they should have no trouble winning both series. And since they already swept Arizona, I guess they’ve gotta win the next two in San Diego, since tonight was an abomination of a performance by Harang, Dusty, and everyone with a bat not named Joey.

by Geki on May 16, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Harang's performance was not an abomination

Not quite what he’s capable of, but not bad. Blame Dusty for not PH’ing for him in the 7th, blame Dusty for not yanking him sooner, blame Dusty for not bringing in Cordero, blame the other old dudes for letting the runs score.

Yeah...

But we looked so ugly tonight against one really bad team. But I guess you have to lose somehow.

It’s just irritating that there’s absolutely no room for error in this division right now.

by manichedgehog on May 16, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Well tough AB for Rosales

Although I believe that Owings is probably a better fast ball hitter…still Rosy has been in the middle of this winning streak (unlike Alex Gonzales)…Rosales was just over matched.

.

Not a very good night for Dusty Baker from a tactical point of view..but hey we can still get 2 out of 3 from these turkeys…

Exactly.

I’m sick of this waste of time with Gonzales.

by Brian B on May 16, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

But no!

Gonzalez won’t stand for being benched. Just like he can’t stand for going on the DL. He did it last year, and he’s not doing it again, goshdarnit!

Dusty’s preference toward washed up old dudes with something to bitch about is getting old.

Truer word were never spoken more truely

You’ve got to have your best fastball hitting PH in there – I believe that Micah Owings is that guy, not Rosales.

not Joe Nathan

At least not tonight. Brett Gardner, oft criticized for being unable to hit even a fastball down the middle, tripled off him. This after he hit an inside the park homerun and a single earlier in the game. He was only in the lineup because Johnny Damon got ejected…and went 3 for 3.

Gonzo has been on the 'outside' for a long time now...

I just don’t see how he is that great of a fit for this team. Hairston was all over the place, diving for balls and so would have Rosales had he been in the game. That kind of effort pays off in the long run…like over 162 games.

I too am weary of Gonzo, but as hedgehog aptly points out….he’s ‘earned’ another start.

by Madville on May 16, 2009 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

According to Dusty

You just can’t replace A-Gon’s defense. Bullcrap. Hairston showed he’s much better than Gonzalez is now. Gonzalez isn’t half the SS he used to be, and he never could hit.

Unforunately, even though Gonzalez may be in our doghouse, he’s still sleeping at the foot of Dusty’s bed.

by manichedgehog on May 16, 2009 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

you can't seriously be blaming Gonzalez for the loss?

1 for 2 with a walk and 2 RBIs? I bet any team would be happy to get that production from their SS.

by BubbaFan on May 16, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

We're not

but that “hit” was a ball Giles lost in the lights and then had bounce off his glove. And that walk was an IBB so that the Padres could get to Harang.

by chesirecat on May 16, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

no error on the play?

Usually if it bounces out of your glove, you get an error.

Hairston is not a started, but Janish could be

I think EdE’s absence will be felt increasingly over the next several series. The Reds can cobble something together at short, but without a real 3B and another RH power bat they’re not afraid to get injured on the basepaths they just don’t have the personnel.

Fya has comments from Dusty...

and as usual, he makes no sense. First he goes on about how Harang is his ace:

Aaron’s my ace. He hates to come out and you hate to take him out.

And then he blames the bullpen collapse on the fact that those relievers hadn’t pitched much recently:

Neither one of them has gotten much work lately. We’ve got to a way to get them work and keep them strong.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.
