BA predicts Reds to eat, er, take Crow.
Baseball America's first mock draft is out. BA predicts Cincinnati to select Aaron Crow, a RHP from the independent league Ft. Worth Cats.
Crow, you probably remember, starred at Missouri and was selected ninth overall last year by the Washington Nationals. The Nats failed to reach an agreement with Crow, who asked for $4 million and was offered $3.3.
Crow is a quality pitcher, having gone 13-0 with a 2.35 ERA as a junior at Missouri. He struck out 127 in 107 IP and was named Big 12 Conference pitcher of the year. Crow throws 92-96 and has touched 98. He commands well a fastball with hard sink and maintains his velocity. Crow's slider is a plus pitch, too, but he sometimes falls in love with it too much. Crow has a developing change-up he'll need if he is to be a MLB starter. While Crow's delivery concerns some scouts because of the effort involved, he keeps the ball down and works both sides of the plate. He reportedly has thrown well this spring for Ft. Worth.
The Reds haven't drafted a pitcher in the first round since Homer Bailey, selecting position players Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, Devin Mesoraco and Yonder Alonso since. Interestingly, Cincinnati had taken four consecutive pitchers -- Jeremy Sowers, Chris Gruler, Ryan Wagner and Bailey -- before the run on bats.
BA's predicted top seven picks are:
1. Washington -- Stephen Strasburg, RHP, San Diego State
2. Seattle -- Dustin Ackley, OF/1B, North Carolina
3. San Diego -- Grant Green, SS, Southern California
4. Pittsburgh -- Kyle Gibson, RHP, Missouri
5. Baltimore -- Alex White, RHP, North Carolina
6. San Francisco -- Donovan Tate, OF, Cartersville (Ga.) HS
7. Atlanta -- Zach Wheeler, RHP, East Paulding (Ga.) HS
Debate at will.

Crow
Last year I was strongly opposed to taking Aaron Crow. Didn’t like his mechanics, still don’t really, but last years draft had a few more top end players that we had to choose from. This year, I have Crow rated 4th overall on my draft board behind Strasburg, (gap) Ackley, (gap), Kyle Gibson and then Crow at #4. I would love to see Gibson fall to us somehow and I can still see several scenarios in which it happens, but if the Reds wind up with Crow I will not be upset at all. His arm is really good and while I don’t like his mechanics the best, its a risk I would be willing to take because his arm is quite good and there just aren’t a ton of safe high ceiling guys this year like there were last.

You're right on, Doug.
If you were the Reds, would you take Grant Green if he slips to them?

I would
he’s projected to stay at SS, right? Isn’t that, like, the Reds’ big need?
College hitters tend to work out the best, I think it would be agreat pick. But Doug and TT know WAY more about this than I do.

No to Green
I would pass on Green if he comes to the Reds. He is a solid gloved shortstop who is very aggressive at the plate and has shown little power with aluminum bats (3 HR this year, 11 the previous two combined years). That tells me he has a long way to go at the plate and I don’t like drafting projects inside of the top 10. Honestly, if we took names away and just showed some scouting reports, what separates Grant Green from a guy like Zach Cozart (current Cozart, not draft year Cozart) other than age? Not much in my mind.

Andy Seiler
over at minor league ball equated him to a sinking brick and projected him at #15 in his latest mock draft. from everything I’ve heard he sounds like too big a risk. those mock drafts are cool by the way, interesting reads.

Would Crow be able to jump to AA
after his year of independent ball?

That wouldn't surprise me,
if the Reds want to be aggressive with him.

Crow is precisely the guy i want this year
a mature arm that can move up the system quickly. i usually prefer to go with the BPA, but the Reds are pretty well stacked with nice position players up and down the minors. the pitching though isnt as abundant.
Turtle, i dont know what Doug thinks about Green, but im not so thrilled with him. im not convinced he is anything that Zach Cozart isnt.

I agree
mainly due to the fact that we could use a few more high end pitchers in the system, and since he’s essentially already had a year in the minors, he should move up fairly quickly.

Ha
Funny, I didn’t even read this post and came to the exact same conclusion. Great minds think alike I guess.

aha
yeah that’s funny. of course, im really starting to take a shinin’ to Cozart, so maybe having his doppelganger wouldnt be such a bad idea.
