2nd Gathering of Displaced Reds Fan Club in DC
Last time we had five people gather at Momo's on U Street. It would have been more, but we had to move from Solly's because they got rid of their Extra Innings package, and several people told me they showed up at Solly's after the second inning, when we moved.
Anyway, come and watch the first place (hopefully still) Reds with fellow fans on Wednesday, May 20 at Momo's on U Street (the address is 1300 something). They take on the World Champion Phillies at 7:10pm.
Next month's gathering? At Nationals Park! To see the Reds live! The Reds from Cincinnati! Three days in a row! The game on Thursday, June 11 oddly starts at 4:35, so we'll have to get together for post-game drinks.

I have a post going up this afternoon that explains my mood with this team
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Does it come complete with a Lost recap?
"I've actually never had a drink before, tonight I might try it out. We'll see."
—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, on turning 21
I'm still picking up pieces of my brain from that episode

My sources said something similar.
Methinks we have the same sources.
"I do and the [hu] of some person am me and others the woman it loves."
that's quite possible, but i won't reveal my source

the show outgrew the character of kate austen two seasons ago
but they didn’t kill her off and now the character is actively making the show worse. The plot has no good purpose for her besides dragging the whole thing down.

I said to my wife last night
“Is Kate even worth all of this trouble?”
Personally, I’d rather have Juliette.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
I accept there are going to be soap opera aspects to the show
because, hey, you’ve gotta appeal to a wider audience, but I will be damned if I accept characters making life and history changing decisions based on silly soap opera motivations.
And Juliette is a prime example. What an interesting and mysterious character when she was introduced. Only she became a mere femme to play against Kate, and so she became a thin character. I still can’t figure out why the hell she decided to do anything she did last night. Pure Kate territory.

agreed
I find that Sawyer is the only logical character in that group still. I felt Jack’s change was inconsistent and like you said, Juliette’s actions were baffling. Kate has no depth and her motivations are pointless and erratic. I think Sawyer’s story, while a bit soapy, still made sense for his character.
What confuses me is the connection of the two stories last night. That 70s Story seems fairly irrelevant. I know it’s not going to stay that way, but they just opened a whole new can of mythology last night and did very little to connect it to seasons 1-4 outside of Jacob’s brief appearances in the characters’ pasts. Again, I’m confident they’ll get to it, but I’m disappointed they didn’t do a little more on that last night.

i just wish the producers
had the balls to just let the show be a full-on sci-fi/fantasy show and let the Jean Teasdales of the world go find their pop-psychology dramas somewhere else.
I think the ultimate problem with Kate’s character, honestly, is that she just isn’t believable to begin with as a “type.” By which I mean she’s the kind of idealized character you often find in modern films and action television shows, but, because she’s such a stretch in terms of real-life verisimilitude, the writers are terribly limited in what they can do with her that seems plausible. This becomes more and more evident over a longer story arc.
I also think that Evangeline Lilly is a limited actor. You can actually see her mentally check out of scenes that don’t involve mushy relationship stuff.

hey, have you read the Flannery O'Connor book that Jacob was reading?
I keep saying that I’m going to read some of these books that Lost keeps pointing to, but I find that I don’t care much for fiction.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
nah
I’ve actually started reading a lot more than I used to. Once my son made it hard for my wife and I to get into any new TV shows, i started picking up books to read while he gets put to bed. I just find non-fiction easier to read for some reason. I guess I don’t read for escapism (that’s why I watch the Reds!), so I prefer to feel like I am learning something.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
yes
it’s actually a collection of short stories. the title story is about a son whose callousness toward his elderly mother (for self-righteous reasons) is exposed as morally repugnant.
I haven’t really thought about what the writers intended this to mean with that easter egg beyond the broader strokes of compassion and forgiveness.
Of the Lost fiction, I’d suggest Valeris or some of the other high end sci-fi books that have appeared. They’re easier to breeze through.

I just went through and looked at the books from the ABC Lost Book Club
and it turns out I’ve read several of them already – many are high school reading requirements. I don’t know if I’ll get around to reading any of the other ones. I just wanted to know if there was any insight in the Flannery O’Connor book.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
plenty
O’Connor should hold a lot of interest for us as a counterpoint to much modern philosophy because she quite literally believed in evil. Not as a name for a social pathology or as a disposition that can be explained away by psychology, personal history, economics or differing perspectives. She believed there was an active font of evil possessed by humans living in a “fallen” state.
So, naturally, she also believed in redemption through acts of grace. What’s interesting is that her acts of grace often come by way of quick, brutal moments of violence or transmogrification of the flesh. Moments that seem rather more vicious than the vague, malaise of evil they come to resolve.
I think you can probably see a Lost connection in that stark, Old Testament philosophy. And with short stories, you can dip in and out.

well
I definitely got the impression that Jacob and his counterpart had a good v. evil vibe going on last night. Perhaps it’s the white and black they were wearing in the opening scene.

Oh and the whole Jacob-Esau, Bad Twin stuff was evident last night too
They went all biblical on us last night.

I think it had to be that way
Kate wouldn’t have tried to bang the bomb. She would have begged for one of the two men to save her and then whined when it wasn’t the one she wanted.

if Kate were to have fallen
i was hoping her big fat head would land on the bomb and set it off. i think im going to write to the show and see if i can be a writer.

I believe the last time I heard that
Was in 2006. I was driving back home and listening to the radio. The station identification came on and said, “You’re listening to 700 WLW, home of the first-place Cincinnati Reds!” And I smiled so big and was pounding the roof of the car. What a great feeling! And then they promptly lost 7 of the next 8 on that West Coast trip to kill the season. But we’re in first place again, and this time we’re doing it in the west!

help me out with that
I can’t get my engine revved up yet, and it’s because of 2006. I’m having fun watching the games, but I’m not totally into this team yet.

I'm on the fence
My enthusiasm is tempered from past meltdowns but their style of play has more staying power this time around IMHO.
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....
I say enjoy it while it lasts.
A couple of injuries…a couple of guys coming back to earth…Gonzales and Edwin back in the line up on an everyday basis who knows what will change the course from winning to losing..plus this team is a RH power bench player, SS and a LF away from stability.
I don’t expect them to be in the play offs, but I’m sure having fun following them as they continue to play winning baseball.
I don’t care about those teams from the past…what they did or did not do is immaterial to the fate of this year’s Red’s team.

True enough
But that won’t stop me from comparing the next Ms jch to the previous ones and running for the hills at the first indication of trouble. :)

I won’t be able to come to the meet-up, I’m graduating the next day. I guess that makes me a fair-weather fan. But If I’m in town in June, I’ll definitely be there for the games.

I'm out...
Chico’s Bail Bonds (my Monday/Wednesday night softball team) are defending a 2-0 record against Advance Office Installers at Canby Park at 6 PM. Bring your own personal protection for the trip to/from the park, not responsibile for vandalism to your car during the game, plenty of cold light beer available post game.
I hear the third baseman is a Punch and Judy type, but can really flash the leather (in addition to being a handsome devil!).
If at all humanly possible, I will be in D.C. for 1 of the games that weekend.

Good place in DC to watch the game Saturday?
I’m going to be in DC this Saturday and I wanted to stop into a sports bar to check out the Brewers/Reds game. I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best place to go. Is Momo’s my best bet?
Momo's is a good bet
Nellie’s is another sports bar on U St. As far as pure sports bars go, there’s very few in the District. It being a Saturday evening, you might have trouble finding a good spot to watch the game. In Northern Virginia, I would recommend Bailey’s (Ballston Mall), Summer’s (Clarendon), or Crystal City Sports Pub (Crystal City). Need someone to watch the game with?

Another word about Momo's
Momo’s is also a DC United bar, and United will be playing a game at the same time as the Reds game. There’s sure to be a viewing party on the second floor. That leaves the first floor open, but Game 6 of the Cavs-Magic game will be that night too. You might be able to stake out a TV, but be aware that they’ll be at a premium.

Thanks
Thanks for the advice! I’m actually picking up my best friend in Columbia, MD and heading into DC by Metro, so Northern VA isn’t an option unfortunately. A friend of mine is having a House Warming Party not far from Momo’s, so I was going to duck in and pregame the party. If I don’t have any luck there, is Nellie’s close? The more the merrier for watching the game—if we can’t find a TV, though, we probably won’t stick around!
Momo's is between 13th and 14th on U. Nellie's is at 9th and U.
I don’t have any plans, so maybe I’ll wander up that direction anyway. Reds game, United game, $2 cans of Schlitz at the Velvet Lounge, Ben’s Chili Bowl and Jumbo Slice, and I think Isis and Pelican are playing at the Black Cat that night. Good times abound on U St.

I wound up at Momo's, watching the United game (which also ended in a depressing fashion)
I didn’t see the Reds game on there anywhere, nor at Nellie’s when I cruised past outside. I hope you found a place to watch it and had a good time in DC.

Ended up staying in MD
… we stopped at the Green Turtle in Columbia and they were very helpful in making sure the Reds game was on for me. Thanks again for the advice, though. After what you had said, I figured I had little to no chance of catching the game anywhere in the city! Can’t wait for next week—heading down for all three games. Would love to meet up with the rest of the Reds fans.
