"And with that, a mighty cheer went up from the heroes of the Diamondbacks. They had banished the awful Micah Owings forever! Because it was haunted."
Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Micah Owings. 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 hits, 4 K, 2 BB. The only reason anybody scored on him is because he hit a guy and was ejected, and then the bullpen let him score.
Key Plays
- On Sep. 12, 2008, Micah Owings is named as the PBTNL to complete the trade of Adam Dunn from Cincinnati to Arizona. Owings swears unholy vengeance.
- On May 12, 2009, Owings exacts it.
- Also, Brandon Phillips got some RBIs.
via FanGraphs
Other Notes
- Votto left the game in the 4th inning with what appears to be some kind of nausea or dehydration.
- The Reds equaled a season high for most earned runs scored off of Haren.
- Arthur Rhodes allowed a run on Felipe Lopez's double, but the run was charged to Owings. Rhodes still has an ERA of 0.00.
- Oh yeah, Owings was ejected after hitting Ryan Roberts in the 8th inning.
- With the win, the Reds are one game behind St. Louis in the Central, and have a better record than three other division leaders. They are five games over .500 for the first time since Aug. 25, 2006.
- Coco Cordero's 10 saves are the most in the majors.

Why was Owings ejected?
Were the benches warned or anything?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i was wondering the same thing
i mean, i think he obviously wouldnt be throwing at someone with a 3-0 lead at the time….was there something that happened earlier in the game to draw a warning??

From what I read on the 'Pit
Phillips seemed to take some exception to an inside pitch from Jon Rauch in the top of the inning. I didn’t realize Owings was ejected though, I thought he was just lifted. It’s all hearsay though: I’d given up and gone to watch Fringe instead… :-(

I am pretty sure he was lifted, not ejected
he sat on the bench for the rest of the game.

Uh....
Have you been watching this team for the past 8 years? Facing some new guy is usually a recipe for disaster. For some completely random reason I remember us getting smacked down by the world-famous Tim Stauffer in 2005. Before the game, I made the same assumption you do.

Regardless of how it's played out before
this guy tonight has over 8K/9ip and about 1bb/9ip over his minor league career. He’s dominated so far, but has only 6 games above A ball. He’s obviously got good stuff and good control, but is he ready for the majors?
Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?
He might be ready for the majors..
but is he ready for THE 2009 CINCINNATI REDS ?

Wow, I had forgotten about that
To be fair, there were so many of those, they kind of ran together.

MLB network
I was flipping between that and the Brewers game and still managed to see BP’s HR swing about ten times. It was classic back footin’ it. They were amused.
Joey – he starts if its the playoffs, probably gets an IV before the game, but May he should be watching the game from his hotel room.
Phillips
I didn’t see what BP did as showing Haren up. He just planted, took his uppercut, and then did his trot. He’s stargazed much worse than that after HRs (and flyouts). Not sure why Rauch felt the need to retaliate.
i dont think Rauch was retaliating
the pitch was hardly even inside. i think BP was feelin’ a little too big for his britches.

That is certainly possible
If only we had a foolproof system to defuse any tension, like maybe the pitcher tipping his hat if a ball goes too far inside. Then nobody would lose face.
It also occured to me that Arizona may have wanted to retaliate for the prior night, when Phillips went from first to third on a single half-assedly fielded by Chris Young. It was later in the game and we were up something like six runs.
thankfully Jonny Gomes wasn't up with the team
he would have distracted that into a ballroom blitz.

Couple of notes.
1) I was upset that Dusty pulled Owings after the hit batsman. Even more upset that he ended up scoring and it wasn’t a shut out. If it would have been a shutout, every Reds starter would have started a shutout this season. Harang and Arroyo with one and Cueto and Volquez with two a piece.
2) Did anyone else know that Hernandez could play first that well? The pick of Rosales throw out of the dirt and the diving stop of the last play of the game which would have certainly plated one were awesome. Truthfully, I think Hernandez deserved the JNMHSotG.
Education is what you get from reading the directions. Experience is what you get from not reading them.
Hernandez has been looking sharp at first base in all the games he's filled in
It says a lot when you lose Joey Votto and don’t even miss a step. It’s funny because the knock on him coming over from Baltimore was that his defense was terrible. It looks like he can make a fine transition to first when he stops catching.
And games like last night’s make picking the JNMHSotG really hard. Jerry Hairston and Brandon Phillips both had legit claims as well, but that’s the best kind of challenge to have.

Hernandez was money at 1st base
I’m perfectly content with him as the backup 1st baseman

that Hernandez just didn’t give a fuck in Baltimore, because it is such a dysfunctional organization.

Someone on Hal's blog
Suggested that when Gonzalez comes back, put him at 3B, let Hairston stay at SS (or I’d be willing to play Janish there too), and just keep Nix as your LF. I like it, except that I don’t think Sea Bass will give you the power you’d like out of a 3B. I’m not even that upset about him playing SS again. I just don’t want to screw around with a lineup that’s been giving us so much success.

Yeah but
With all the hemming and hawing Dusty and co. have done about what a fantastic shortstop Sea Bass is, they’ll never concede that he’s better off playing 3B.

what's weird
is that he made top plays on Sportscenter, and they only had like 4 baseball plays on their list.
