You are GM Walt Jocketty
First I want to start off by saying, I think Walt has done an outstanding job so far as GM. Obtaining Ramon, Willy T, and Collossus have been excellent moves so far, and I think they are the big part of our current success.
That being said.......I have a 2 players on our current 25-man roster (24 currently) that I think could be greatly improved upon.
The first one has the following numbers which seem respectible : 2.31 ERA with 0.88 WHIP, and 0.150 AVG against left handers. This seems respectable until you realize that he has pitched 11.2 innings, with 5.2 being against LH and 6.0 BEING AGAINST RH who are hitting a whopping .346 AVG with a 2.33 WHIP!!!!!! This does not even include the inherited runners he enjoys pushing around the bases. I understand the reason for his current roster spot, you need a LH specialist, but you have LHRP in AAA who pitched 47 innings of 2.87 ERA in the bigs last year. He also has 5 innings of no runs 0.6 WHIP going for him at AAA. And he gets everyone out, so you don't have to worry about your manager misunderstanding his role, or him losing a 14 inning game, or losing a game against the fucking Cardinals. In short DANIEL RAY "VOTE FOR PEDRO" HERRERA IS A BUM, BRING UP BILL "FORMER 1ST ROUND PICK" BRAY.
Next we have a battle of RH outfielders. One is a RH OF "hitting" 0.231 for the Reds, and can't lay down a fucking bunt to save his life. I don't care if you bring up a pitcher, get this guy off the 25 man. Seriously we have Owings, and at least a pitcher could lay down a bunt. They could also bring value when Badroyyo decides to start throwing batting practice. OK so we have 2 guys in AAA that could out play this BUM.(actually all Bats OFs could, but ANYWAYS) Hopper is hitting .315 and is 8/9 in SBs and is a great bunter. Gomes is hitting 0.242(BOOO) but has 6 homers(YEAH). In short, DUMP DMAC AND BRING UP HOPPER. DFA THIS BUM, I BET MY LIFE SAVINGS NOONE PICKS HIM UP.
Walt make these chages before going west!!!!

I'm behind you.
Danny Ray should go, Bill Bray should be here, I’ve been saying this since day one. Our little cholo needs to lean on down to AAA, and we should bring up a potentially dominant guy in Bray up in his place. Yes, Billy will probably get hurt at some point, but better to have it happen in the majors than in AAA.
And McDonald absolutely needs to go, and I don’t care what we put in his place. I’m not sure Hopper is really much of an improvement on McDonald, but Gomes or the right-handed version of Laynce Nix would be just spectacular.
Except, you know, Billy is on the DL right now in AAA, so he's not dominating anything at the moment.

Bray will be up
Although I like Danny Ray- He just needs some confidence to throw strikes. Otherwise is numbers are solid. 8+ K rate 3.11 FIP- is periphal numbers are better than Bray last year.
But in his role you can not afford him being consistently behind the first batter he faces.
Bray just needed to show he is healthy I really cannot imagine if he continues with any type of strong performance that he wont be on the Major League roster in 2 weeks.
I would also dump McDonald- and no organization wil pick him up. But I would add Gomes as the RH bat for the LF platoon.
Whoa, dude. Calm down.
Herrera isn’t even the worst reliever on this team.
…and you really think Hopper would be an improvement over McDonald?
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Actually, Hopper is hitting really well in Louisville right now
He has multiple hits in 7 of his last 10, and has brought his average up to .315. Then again, he isn’t really walking much or slugging, so he may not be useful off the bench either. Still… he has 8 SB which is more than Willy T…

Just to clarify
I’m not advocating bringing him up, I’m just saying he may not be worse than McDonald. Then again, I’d DFA McDonald and bring Gomes up if I was Walt.

agreed
Herrera is not the worst guy in our pen. (And no, that’s not counting Janish.) Given that Bray is on the DL once again, I have no problem with keeping Danny Ray around.
NoHo vs. Crabman is kind of a wash. Though I think Hopper is a better defender.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Herrera is obviously the worst reliever on this team
Herrera is a bum. I coach a Jr. high wrestling team, my starting 145 lber could crush him. How is he not the most frustrating pitcher to watch on the planet? He’s a soft tosser that can’t throw strikes. He might as well throw fucking underhand. At least Lincoln has the best curveball I’ve ever seen when he’s on.
Seriously I don’t care what we do with Herrera and his mustache, but he needs to be off this roster. Bring in Roenicke, Bray, Bailey, Ramirez, Maloney…..I don’t care I just know I scream at Dusty every time he enters the game.
Hey, I hear “Mine that bird” needs a jockey this Saturday, let’s send his ass to Pimlico!

McDonald is pretty one dimensional offensively
and not a great fielder. I wish he were doing better but really he hasn’t shown us much to keep him at the MLB level..
We all know NoHo…mediocre bat, great bunter, decent baserunner, average fielder, OK arm.
Unfortunately we really don’t need a guy like Norris on this specific team. We need a RH bat off the bench besides Micah who can drill the ball out of the park or at least off the wall – off the bench. Gomes can do that (he too is pretty one dimensional.and I know there are roster issues here). I see no reason to keep Donal;d McDuck on the 40 man. no one is going to pick him up and despite his limitations Gomes does have the needed power and he’s been in a pennant race too.
I think Herrera needs some seasoning but until Bray is ready Daniel will have to get his seasoning under the gun.
Right now the only guy I see who needs go anywhere is McDonald. the team is winning, they’re playing with passion and energy. Gonzo should be DFA’d until he’s for sure ready to play. don’t bring him back until he’s 101% healed. Jannish is doing OK..in fact he is a better fielder than Gonzales. EdE also doesn’t need to be rushed back. Rosy is erratic but he sure brings a fun nerdy-kid-like goofiness to the team and so far that has been good.
Good-by to Darnel and hello to Jonny.
The only other guy that really worries me is Cordero. But me thinks we are stuck with a $46M slightly better than average closer.
I mean the team is winning. For how long…don’t know…but even when they lose like today they usually find a way to stay in the game or get back in the game. That’s what winning teams do.

To be honest
I would rather have a guy on the bench that gets on base 35% of the time and hits no home runs, than a guy who gets on about 30% and might hit 10 homers.
by Dave from Louisville on May 11, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously?
It depends on what you’re looking for off the bench. If you’re bringing a pinch hitter off the bench in a high leverage situation, you’re saying you’d rather have Norris Hopper bunt a runner over than Gomes potentially hit a double or home run?

Most of the time (Slyde will bear me out, I'm sure0
A PH is used to fucking drive in runs… a double or home run is usually what we’re looking for….Norris would have to learn to hit the ball out of the infield to do that.
We need a mano y mano guy like Gomer..A guy who’ll stand in there beat the shit out of the pitcher if he strikes Jonny out.
Never Try and Never, ever Care - That’s the Madville Way
Yeah i disagree
How is he gonig to beat the shit out of a pitcher if he doesn’t make it out of the batter’s box.
Gomes is a fucking distraction, he is going to come in here like he’s somebody and act like he knows how to play baseball. Gomes sucks, i would be surprised if he hit over .230 in the majors again. This team is full of guys that do not call attention to themselves and get their work done. I like that. Gomes would fuck that up. Not to mention, he can’t play defence. We already have a fucking crocket wicket at 3B and now you want to put a flat-foot alligator armed mother fucker back to back him up. Our LF defence needs to be better because what we lack at 3B.
Let’s not forget the fact that Gomes was fucking horrible off the bench and had a pissy attitude last year he lost his starting spot. I bring up Stubbs before Gomes, that is unless Gomes starts hitting .280/.340 then I have a higher tolerance for his bullshit.

How many fights do you think we'll get into?
Whether you see Gomes as a loyal teammate or a distraction, I don’t think his pugilism will affect whether this team wins or loses. To me this has become Votto’s team. If anyone sets the tone for the club (and to the extent that matters), it’s Votto with his his no-BS attitude and stern Northwoods stoicism. Not the 25th man.
Rays were good because of pitching/defense
which was why Gomes was on the bench. Are you seriously giving the credit for the AL pennet to a guy that got 154 ABs and hit a whopping 0.182?
Now did he “have their backs” or was he an instigator. Either way, I want a smart players that don’t say shit like “it’s not over.” That crap is bush league.

yes, that is exactly what I think
Jonny Gomes is the reason the Rays won pennant. Or perhaps I was disputing your point that Gomes is a distraction to his team. Nope, I just reread what I wrote. Gomes gets the credit for the Rays.
And his quote in that article was “To tell you the truth, I kind of doubt [it’s over].” That’s not exactly, “it’s not over.” I read that quote to say, “there’s some bad blood being created here between us and the Yankees.” Hell, even Posada agreed.
Here’s the thing. In a spring training game, Shelley Duncan slid like this into 2nd base (did I mention it was a Spring Training game):

If you want bush league, there you go. I love that Gomes went after Duncan for that, not because I love fights, but because what Duncan did was bullshit. What you call a distraction, I call a player telling his teammates that they don’t have to take that shit from the Yankees.

We need a guy who can hit the ball over the wall, a RH hitter with pop, a situational hitter…plus any guy who can beat the shit out of the average 25-30 professional athlete with an IQ of 109 – I like having a guy like that on my team. He’s not a distraction in any way shape or form. And Dave, in HS or on my Select Soccer teams, a guy like this would be a distraction (and inappropriate) .but at the level of competition that is MLB.. well Gomes is a great fit fit for a team like the Reds.
We have Jerry Jr. Jannis, Hanigan… we don’t need McFlurry, or C-Dick or NoHo, they are not what this team needs, they’re soft.

About Time Someone Said It!!!
Who the hell is McDonald anyway? Baker likes to keep at least one washup on the team at all times. No one will forget Pattersuckass! Hopper should have been on the roster at the beginning of the year. All Baker preaches about is small ball, speed, and defense. Hopper can do all three. The guy was great two years ago. Seems like Baker has something against him. Herrera blows as well. His 80 mph fastball isn’t the most intimedating. Bring up Bray or someone who pitches faster than a high school pitcher.
just for the record
here’s the deal with Bray. his arm hurts. he’s on the DL.
as for Herrera, .190/.261/.190. that is what lefties are hitting off of him so far this year. the guy kills lefties, and it’s actually up to the manager to make sure he doesnt face righties. Herrera isnt the best pitcher in the bullpen, but that is more a testament to the quality of the rest of the guys. he’s pretty good. and as a loogy, he’s really good.

I'm in the camp of Gomes over McDonald
vs. LHP:
Gomes – .348/.464/.783 (3HR in 23 ABs)
McDonald – .353/.421/.353 (6 singles in 17 ABs)
It’d be wonderful to have a little power on the bench. When Hairston is on the bench, he’s the only HR hitter there (with 3 this year, which is half-way to his career high of 6 last year).
