2009 - Adam Wainwright 3-1 4.08 1.61 30 20

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Edinson Volquez 4-2 3.47 1.29 35 25

Hi folks!  I'm back from my exciting tropical vacation and ready for Reds baseball in (partly) sunny and hot lukewarm Cincinnati!  When I left the Reds were starting to falter, had just drawn under 10k at GABP for the first time ever, and were in danger of falling back below .500.  Having been away, I assume that that trend has continued and the Reds are as bad as ever.  Lemme check the standings to confirm...

ZOINKS!

I go away for a week and the Reds throw 4 shutouts in 6 games!?!?!  And now they are on the verge of sweeping the first place Cardinals and are only 1.5 games out?  And they drew over 40 thousand fans last night?  What have you guys done to my nice, predictable Reds???

I probably don't need to tell you this, but Edinson Volquez has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings pitched.  That streak has dropped his ERA all of the way from 6.20 down to a solid 3.47 (though still no where near Cueto's 1.59 ERA, jch24).  Also, Volquez has allowed just 9 hits over his last 4 starts!  9 hits in 4 starts.  9.  Yowza!

Despite making 20 starts last season with the Cardinals, Adam Wainwright did not face the Reds once all year.  Brandon Phillips is the only active Reds player with a hit off of Wainwright (1 for 10).  Wainwright has pitched well so far this year, but he was roughed up in his last start against the Phillies, allowing 9 hits and 7 runs over 6 innings pitched.  He gave up 2 home runs in that game, but has only allowed 3 total home runs on the season, so small ball should be in full effect today.

It's Mother's Day today, so be sure to give a big hug and a kiss to the one who birthed you, if you can.  It's also my son's 3rd birthday, so I probably won't be around much despite the fact that I missed you all immensely.  It's bad enough that I've got to be nice to my entire family today, but to have to miss the Reds game too is just unfair.  Hopefully I can squeeze it in to my busy schedule.

I thought we just needed to get rid of Adam Dunn and EdE to be successful

now I realize we need to get rid of Slyde, too. Get him!

Yes, it would appear that the Reds can finally enjoy the game

without me taking so much away from it with my sabermetrics and such.

Votto's out again today.

Taveras CF
Hairston SS
Bruce RF
Phillips 2B
Nix LF
Hernandez 1B
Rosales 3B
Hanigan C
Volquez P

Per Fay’s back-up.

I think the absence of Jo-eh has made everyone else in the lineup realize that maybe they can’t just sit back and watch him singlehandedly win games.

Assuming that Janish is back to feeling well...

I find it kind of sad that Rosales is in the lineup but he isn’t. Then again, Rosales hasn’t been quite as bad the past couple of games.

He was on Baseball Tonight (?) this morning saying, um, something about the Reds. I’m still not exactly sure what. But I watched Baseball tonight for the first time in forever.

the WHIP is so high because of all the walks

by Charlie Scrabbles on May 10, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, based on numbers to this point...

Votto’s hitting .370 and something much higher with runners on. He’s had 23 RBI through 100 ABs, so a little bit behind Pujols, but to this point of the season / if he were to hit .340+, maybe it’s more comparable, or I’m talking out of my ass.

by jsl413 on May 10, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Votto is beyond superlatives right now

but realistically this kind of production cant last. he was worth 38.2 RAR last year according to FanGraphs, and i could see him improving on that to the tune of something like 50-60. but to think he could produce like Pujols is…well come on man, im a dreamer too, but that’s just bananas.

go look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls

Bananas are tasty.

I don’t think his Pujols-esque, yet, but Pujols is also 5 years older than his Dominican birth certificate gives on. Votto will still get stronger, and could perform at a .330/30/110 clip annually pretty easy. Bat Bruce behind him with 50-HR power, and then Phillips can hit somewhere natural for him, maybe we find a way to get Votto and Alonso on the same team, and everything goes nuts.

oh yeah

Votto and Bruce are both serious dudes, but Pujols has been worth about 80 RAR every year since ’03. Pujols is a legitimate threat to be the best player ever by the time he is done, and that is not hyperbole.

Votto and Bruce are gonna be great, all-start level guys, but Pujols is the Grand Canyon.

And the ball was hit really sharply. Rickey Henderson wouldn’t have been in any position to break up that double play.

And, oh yeah, the double play didn’t happen anyways. You’re insufferable.

by Reynard on May 10, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, it should have been a double play.

And that has nothing to do with Ramon Hernandez, it has to do with Adam Rosales being an expert at hitting the ball directly to the shortstop.

by Madville on May 10, 2009 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

Wait... what?

We took 2 of 3 from the Cardinals and arguably should have just won today. We ARE competing; we’re doing better than competing. We’re winning! I’ll take a 66% winning percentage at home all season, especially with how well we’ve played on the road. This might not be a World Series team, but it’s a helluva competitive one.

by jsl413 on May 10, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I continue not to understand...

why Dusty trusts Burton in high leverage situations, but not Nick Masset, who has been much more successful (this year, at least).

Sigh.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

by Gray on May 10, 2009 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

today was kinda rough

but i mean 2 out of 3 from St. Louis is good. Hopefully they can role on through arizona. Owings is the man!

Now somebody please explain why Hairston bunted in the 10th? I mean the way the infield was charging in I would have had him swing away because a hit would not have been that hard to achieve. You know in a strategic chess game sometimes the best thing to do is nothing, while the opponent pushes all sorts of buttons, and let him fuck up. I really don’t like a Dusty TLR matchup of wits.

Hariston just looked completely lost.

He bunted at and swung at 2 pitches about shoe-lace high. It doesn’t matter what he was asked to do given his effort.

by jsl413 on May 10, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Folks this team will come back to earth sooner than later if:

!. We continue to count on Defelice McFlurry
2. If Gonzo is rushed back and not DL’d…we really need him to play at above league average OF/DF
3,Plus we can’t hope that Rosales if going to be anyting but streaky
4. And CoCo is an implosion waiting to happen
5, Nix is obviously the choice for LF but Dustballs PH McFlurry for him? And Nix is limited
6. MAYBE EdE finally wakes up…I don’t see it
7, and We Can’t compete without a consistent LF and 3B hitters with some pop
8.The player with most offensive upside is Micah, he’s at best a #5 as a pitcher, Put him in the pen, let him start to work on playing LF or 1B and GET HIS BAT IN THE LINE UP.

This team is fun, passionate and winning,,,but playing out their asses, over their heads,,,they could keep it up with just a bit of help…they have the pitching (although Cordero is really a bust for the bucks)

This team as it stands just can’t sustain winning long enough without a bit of help. Especially if Bronson is going to be as up and down as Bronson is wont to be.

I’m excited and positive but cautious about getting to excited and optimistic.

Ultimately I love optimists
!
