Farmers Only: Apparently everyone affiliated with the Reds took the day off on Thursday
All three Reds minor league teams playing Thursday night lost, and no home runs were hit. Not very exciting for a Reds off day, if you ask me.
- Louisville was rained out. Matt Maloney and Sam LeCure will take Buffalo on in a doubleheader, with Game 1 starting at 5:30.
- Carolina lost 3-1 to the former Reds affiliate. Dallas Buck pitched three innings for the Mudcats before leaving in the 4th with an injury, according to the Mudcats broadcast. No word yet as to how bad the injury is. Ruben Medina and Alexander Smit pitched two innings of scoreless ball each before Derrik Lutz blew the lead in the 8th to lose the game for the Mudcats. Michael Griffin and Eric Eymann had two hits each for the Mudcats. Up next: Travis Wood takes on those traitorous Lookouts, 7:15 ET.
- Sarasota came back from being down 5-2, but lost 7-5 in 10 innings. Matt Klinker allowed 5 runs in his 6 innings of work, and former catcher Ben Davis gave up the walk off home run in the 10th. Kevyn Feiner led the S-Reds with two hits, and Justin Reed was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI. Up next: Travis Webb takes on St. Lucie, starting at 7:00.
- Dayton lost to the Beloit Snappers, 6-4. Lance Janke picked up 2 2/3 more scoreless innings in long relief, lowering his ERA to 1.62. Carlos Mendez, Kevin Coddington, and Frank Pfister had two hits each for the Dragons. Up next: Matt Fairel is the scheduled starter against Beloit, first pitch at 7:30.

No recap up of yesterday's game yet, I'd imagine we'll have more info when that comes out

From the Dragons game recap (h/t to RLN)
J.C. Sulbaran will be starting for Dayton tonight. Woo hoo!

The Mexican League
has suspended play due to swine flu.
They had been playing in empty ballparks, but they’ve decided to suspend play instead.
Soccer will go on, though. They’ll play with no fans in attendance, so people have something to watch while confined in their homes under quarantine.

I'm think I'm missing something here
Swine flu is new, so there is no vaccination to prevent it.
It’s affecting ‘healthy’ people 20-40. Hmm, since it’s new, it would make sense that no one would have built up a resistence to it.
But the symptoms are like the normal flu, and a number of flu drugs currently available seem to work fine. It’s not like this is untreatable.
In the United States, there has been ONE death from this. And in Mexico, a couple hundred or so. Meanwhile, the regular flu has already killed more than 10,000 in the U.S. this year, kills about 35,000 in the U.S. every year, and around 250,000-500,000 worldwide.
Now I understand them wanting to contain it so it’s not too widespread. And I understand being smart about taking steps to avoid it, but overall, I believe this will be ultimately known as the Great Swine Flu Hysteria of ’09.

That's the goal...
And I understand being smart about taking steps to avoid it, but overall, I believe this will be ultimately known as the Great Swine Flu Hysteria of ’09.
If we only remember this as hysteria, then everyone did their job.
You’re right that it’s not a particularly virulent or deadly strain—the problem is just that nobody has immunity. But even a boring, everyday flu kills thousands of people, and that’s when we keep it from sweeping through the entire population by immunizing lots of people. If it really does infect a significant chunk of the population, we’re certainly talking about thousands of deaths among children and the elderly. The way to head off all of those deaths (and the huge containment costs) is to shut down transmission of the virus early on.
Now, whether these measures actually achieve that is another issue.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
I wonder if it'll make it Madagascar before they close the ports

It's early yet
It’s affecting ‘healthy’ people 20-40. Hmm, since it’s new, it would make sense that no one would have built up a resistence to it.
What’s worrisome is that it seemed to be killing healthy people 20-40. Usually, it’s children and the elderly who die of the flu. If young adults are dying, that suggests something different is happening. Perhaps a “cytokine storm” – where your own immune system ends up killing you by overreacting. This tends to happen among the young and healthy, because they have the strongest immune systems.
At this point, it’s probably too soon to say if that’s happening. The news coming out of Mexico is kind of confused and may be unreliable.
I believe this will be ultimately known as the Great Swine Flu Hysteria of ’09.
Could be, but it’s way too early to say. This is H1N1, just like the “Spanish flu.” (Which might actually be from Kansas, but never mind.) The Spanish flu first appeared in spring, and seemed relatively mild. It came back in the fall, and was much worse. That’s when most of the deaths occurred.

Flu viruses mutate rapidly, and I think that’s what they’re worried about, as much as anything.

I'm a little disappointed
in the lineup tonight.
No Janish. and BA is pitching. It has been the only opp Dusty has been giving him, but not this time.
No Nix. I realiize it’s a LHP, but I want to see what he can do. He’s been hot so let him prove or disprove himself.
At least Hannigan gets his every 5th day start.
Agreed
I’d much rather see Nix in there over Hairston, who’s completely sucked lately.

But you know Dusty is never, ever going to start him
against a LHP.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Yes, I realize this.
But, sometimes I think Dusty overthinks match-ups. If Cherry were on a hot streak, I probably would not question it. I like Cherry, but he is struggling.
looking at the weather forecasts, I really doubt this game gets played anyway

Arrrgh are you serious?
I need my baseball
Dusty Baker said it was the first [triple play] he’d seen in person. When he was with the Dodgers, they hit into one, but he was in the bathroom.- C Trent

Doesn't look good
Rain and thunderstorms predicted for Pittsburgh tonight.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Dusty shouldn't start him against a LHP
Nix career against lefties: .178/.215/.256
I’ll take Cherry
Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?
Eh, he basically hasn't had PAs against anybody since 2005...
and Cherry isn’t looking great against RHP or LHP this year, also with a small sample size: .440 OPS in 19 PAs vs. RHP, .614 in 24 PAs vs. LHP.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
That said, I'm not too torn up about it...
I’ll be more annoyed when Dickerson starts the next time we’re up against a RHP.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
