Red Reposter - 4/9/09
- I was shocked (shocked!) to see that Jerry Hairston Jr left the game last night due to injury. He fouled a pitch off his left ankle. No word yet on the severity of it, but he will not play this afternoon.
- In case you didnt see it here, here, here, or here, Jonny Gomes has accepted his assignment to AAA Louisville and (barring anything unforeseen) will likely be starting for the Bats when they open their season this evening. My guess is that if Hairston's ankle is bad enough, Gomes will be the one recalled to replace him.
- Alex Gonzalez played another 9 innings last night and says he's A-ok. He also made a game-changing error, which Dusty likened to a good Gus Van Sant film or total lunar eclipse: "You may not see that again in 10 years."
- FanGraphs has been ranking minor league systems, and the Reds came in at #12. This is higher than where Baseball America (#14) and Baseball Prospectus (#19) rank them, and is a bit more in line with where I would personally rank them. They also name them (along with the Red Sox) as the farm system "most likely to improve significantly" this year.
- I know we are only 2 games into the season, but check out these batting lines from our 3 and 4 hitters: Votto - .500/.556/.875 Phillips - .400/.556/.600 Ohhhh yeah.
- Joe Posnanski interviewed Michael Schur, who you may know from the Office and "Fire Joe Morgan" (he was Ken Tremendous). He's funny, and he knows a lot about baseball.
- BA has ranked the minor league parks of America (from RLN) and Fifth Third Field in Dayton (home of the Dragons) and Louisville Slugger Field (home of the Bats) rank 7th and 9th, respectively. I plan on seeing a few games in Dayton this year myself, and I would encourage you to do the same.

wow
Bright House Field is 10th on the list? That’s about the best ballpark I’ve ever been to, based on design, amenities, etc. And Dayton and Louisville are better?
I wonder what their criteria was. I really like PNC Field in Scranton…because there’s hardly anyone there most games. I like having the park to myself. But I imagine that’s not something on their list.

I haven't been to many minor league stadia, so I can't rightfully compare
But Fifth Third Field (Dayton) is rad-tacular! Especially for Single A. The only thing that would make it better is if they made flames shoot out of the dragons on the scoreboard after a strikeout or home run or something.
Watching Adam Dunn and Wily Mo Pena take shots at Mendelsson’s was pretty awesome.

what's so great about it?
Just the scoreboard?
I will say that Scranton has the best food offerings I’ve seen at a minor league park. They’ve got everything. Healthy stuff like roasted vegetables, and not-so-healthy stuff like blooming onions, blooming potatoes, cheese cake, a million different kinds of ice cream, etc.

It's a very nice, clean stadium
There are some luxury boxes and party decks. There’s a great lawn in the outfield that you can sit on. It’s incorporated very well into the city (not that there was much in that part of town to begin with). I got the only foul ball I’ve ever caught there. I wasn’t even at the game, but was just walking past, and someone hit a foul out of the stadium and onto the street, where I snagged it.
The scoreboard isn’t even all that impressive, but the stadium is routinely sold out, and always a good time at the park. I have a hard time coming up with one thing they do that’s outstanding, other than to say they do everything very well. It’s a very professional stadium, and for a Single A team in Dayton, OH, that’s pretty outstanding.

So, um.
If Gonzalez keeps hitting like this, we really would be better off with soft J at short.
And at least Hanigan at catcher makes me dislike this lineup slightly less…
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Gonzalez did get two walks yesterday
Though hitting in front of the pitcher might have something to do with that.

As for the ballparks...
The Greensboro stadium is on the list above the Durham Bulls stadium? Hrm.

I'm heading to the Dragons game tonight
I looked over the roster and the only name I recognize is Tyler Stovall. Anybody have any suggestions for players to watch tonight?
There aren't very many prospects on that roster
But David Sappelt is another guy to watch, in the OF. He tore up Billings last year. On the pitching side, it’ll be interesting to see how tonight’s starter Matt Fairel does, as there were talks of him starting out a level higher. There could be some guys to watch in that bullpen too, with Aguido Gonzalez and Mace Thurman making the futures game roster, and Curtis Partsch as well if he pitches in the bullpen instead of the rotation.

Wow. If this true..very sad story
TMZ and MLBTraderumors is reporting Nick Adenhart of the LA Angels was killed in a hit and run traffic accident last night. He pitched 6-shutout innings last night. Sad story, thoughts are with his family.

Wow
That’s terrible. What an unfortunate story.

holy crap
You wouldn’t think running a red light would end up killing three people in this day and age, but judging from the photo, very high speeds were involved.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
They say it was a minivan that ran the red light
I can’t imagine it had that much speed, but with that kind of mass, you don’t need a lot of speed to do a lot of damage.

This is doubly tragic for the Angels
A fan was beaten and died at the stadium on Opening Night.
Also, TMZ is reporting that another member of the Angels organization (don’t say if it’s a player or not) was in the car with Adenhart and also died.

charlie, lets not fly off the handle here
quality gus van sant movies (by my own estimation)
good will hunting — 1997
elephant — 2003
paranoid park — 2007
drugstore cowboy and my own private idaho get honorable mentions (1989 and 1991 respectively). the guy is talented, he just does a lot of crap
His appearance in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
was one of the best parts of that movie.
