Opening Day Game Thread: Part 3
The Reds have one hit. The Mets have one run. That's kind of like a tie, right?

To reiterate - gomes looks good to me cause now that Owings is used, we have no one with RH power off the bench
Its probably going to happen - bend over
Look, wherever Gomes ends up..
..he’s gonna help the Reds only slightly less than he would have had he made the team.

I agree
That’s what I didn’t understand about yesterday’s roster moves. If they wanted to dump Gomes in favor of a no-hit, all-glove CFer, I’d have understood. As with Janish at SS, you want a solid defender in the position, at least off the bench.
But neither McDonald nor Nix is all that good in CF.

I'm pretty sure Dusty was watching TV yesterday
And saw the Filet o’ Fish commercial, laughed, and said, “That’s it, Darnell’s on the team! And fetch me a fish sammich!”
Another ball Hairston SHOULD have caught.

Johan
Looks like we’re not getting rid of Johan. He’s hitting for himself in the sixth. Even worse, he draws a walk.
And that's why you don't walk the pitcher
Harmless ground ball should have ended the inning. Instead, it lets a runner cross home.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
Yeah, but Danny Ray Herrera kinda sucks.
So it’s not his fault.
Attention Red Reporters: Many of you have fallen victim to the same crap that you complain about our management doing — falling in love with a subpar player because he is scrappy/a good story/had a good spring.
Pitchers with his kind of stuff just don’t make very good relievers, especially since he’s gonna be used as a LOOGY and he’s gonna be better against righties than lefties because his only two halfway decent pitches are a screwball and a change.
MLB.TV
There’s a big time lag between MLB.TV and the actual game. Reyes is batting right now on my screen, but Yahoo of course has the Murphy RBI in the bag.

"If I ever find a pitcher who has heat, a good curve, and a slider, I might seriously consider marrying him, or at least proposing." - Sparky Anderson
You know... for what its worth
Our pitchers have done a damn good job stranding runners. If our offense is going to be this pathetic all season, then it is going to be mentally draining on our pitching staff. The Mets are a good team and we’ve held them to only two runs despite numerous chances. It is time for our offense to do something!

McDonald led off the inning with a single and then Votto followed with a single. Brandon Phillips was coming up and he’s pretty good. Let’s let him do whatever he’s gonna do. Worst case scenario? BP gonna swing for Kentucky and end up GIDP. That leaves McDonald on third with Bruce coming up. Bruce’s contribution to the ‘nothing all day’ was solid contact in the first and a dent in the left-centerfield wall in the fourth.
The best case scenario? Edwin grand slam.
Fuck havoc.

KCord!
One out in the 9th…. well… it would have been cool if we had gotten those 2 runs last inning.

And! by doing so, helped me win tickets to see them open for the Cribs. I kind of prefer Ryan Jarman when he’s being a guest on Nevermind the Buzzcocks.

Let's get out of this inning and at least give ourselves a chance

Most blogs lead lives of quiet desperation
Red Reporter, on the other hand, is pretty loud.
jeff: but i shudder to think of the bullpen analogy to sending the runner
Good to see you.

Did you catch what he did last year?

Boy.... we're really putting a scare into them in the 9th

Yes.

I dunno.
This game went about how I thought it might. I didn’t think we’d get shutout but I didn’t think we’d be just a play or two away from winning it.

Its not just that we're going to lose a lot of games this season
… it’s more that we’re going to lose a lot of games in a really boring fashion this season.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
Yeah, but on Opening Day with two aces going, you're gonna have 2-1 games.
And I kinda like that. I don’t like losing 2-1 but I like 2-1 games on Opening Day.

At least the pitching (other than DRH) was solid
If Harang or the ‘pen had gotten beaten around, I’d be depressed
Is it Wednesday night yet?
Also...
Three or four of the hits credited to Adam Harang were Chicken McNuggets.

Aw, c'mon.
I know the Reds got pwnd by the likes of Johnathan Sanchez last year but they’re facing a young pitcher with a high WHIP on Wednesday and I think they hit em a little bit last year.
Quit yer mopin’ until they’re at least two games under .500!

Yeah, just ask the Yankees
Despite splashing out half a billion dollars in the off-season, they lost to the Orioles. And it wasn’t a pitcher’s duel, even though Sabathia was on the mound.
