Opening Day can only do so much for a lack of offense; Reds lose 2-1
The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Johan Santana - 5.2 IP, R, 3 H, 7 K and 4 BB.
Key Plays
- The Reds had 2 runners on in the first inning, but failed to get anyone home when Jay Bruce flied out.
- The Mets loaded the bases in the fourth, but Harang coaxed a pop up out of Johan Santana to get out of the jam.
- The Reds had 2 runners on in the fourth, but failed to score when Ramon Hernandez swung at the first pitch after a walk and grounded out to shortstop.
- Daniel Murphy hit the first HR of the year in GABP in the 5th inning off of Harang to put the Mets up 1-0. The Mets threatened for more in the inning, but Bruce threw out David Wright at home plate and Harang managed to get out of the inning.
- Daniel Ray Herrera walked a couple of hitters in the 6th to load the bases and the Mets tacked on another run on a ground out. Mike Lincoln was brought in to snuff out the rally.
- The Reds finally got on the board when Darnell McDonald havocked his way to third base and scored on Brandon Phillips sacrifice fly.
via FanGraphs
Other Notes
- Harang was playing a lot of bend, but don't break throughout the game. He threw 114 pitches in his 5 innings of work, something that he will definitely have to improve if he's going to a workhorse this season.
- I'd say the offense looked anemic, but that would be an insult to all those nice people with iron deficiencies out there. They did draw 5 walks on the day, clearly clogging the bases in the process.
- Darnell McDonald didn't garner a lot of fans in this game. His defense was somewhat lacking in the outfield, but he did have one of the Reds 3 hits and scored the only run for the whole team.
- At least the weather wasn't too nasty at BW3s.

That sucked.
But on the plus side, I finished off one mediocre beer + a 22 ounce bottle of New Belgium Mothership Wit, and I’m feeling a lot better.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Also:
Jay Bruce flied out. COMMON!

And because I'm back at work after three beers...
What’s with the “545” in the middle of that graph?

I can't remember..
.. I know Bruce hit one off the wall in the middle innings but how high/far/hard was his fly out in the first?
I seem to remember him impressively fouling off a Santana pitch or two with some quick choppy defensive swings but I don’t remember the out itself.
I do however remember Votto’s K in the 8th.
I think in 2010 the Reds win this game 4-2.

I dunno. Let’s just imagine that JB is a year older, wiser and better. He knocks in his RISP in the first Same with Votto in the eighth. And let’s imagine that Edwin has finally blossomed. And let’s imagine that Walt has signed a free agent or two so that none of us have to get all weepy or indignant over anything having to do with Gary Sheffield or Jonny Friggin Gomes.
My point is.. this team is going to be better this year than last and will very likely be better next year than this.

Oh noes!
The Reds are averaging 1 run(s) per game!
… on the other hand, they’re at 2 runs allowed. :)
Reds record while I'm in attendance: 15-0 (lifetime)
Can someone score me some tickets? :)
They are averaging 0.4 runs a game fewer than their projection.
"Like I always tell people, I'm a baseball player, it's what I do." - Jonny Gomes, Free Agent
Silver lining
Hernandez’s hacking in the 4th aside, I was very encouraged to see the Reds draw 4 walks against Santana. He’s not a Schilling in terms of his walk prevention, but still, to draw 4 against a guy who averaged 2.1 per 9 last year is impressive.
Santana + cold = low run scoring environment, so we shouldn’t get all bunched up about scoring 1 run. Volq will return the favor on Wednesday!
My thoughts:
I’m not really sure what to think of Harang’s outing. He looked pretty sharp, but he really racked up the pitches. Could’ve been worse, but I’d like to see less baserunners and a bit more control on the breaking ball. His fastball command was real sharp, though, and the movement and velocity were pretty good.
Darnell McDonald showed why having a guy make his first opening day squad in an 11 year career is a bad thing, not a good thing. Hopefully some of his terrible defense was just a result of the sloppy conditions, but it looked like he was getting some downright awful reads on balls. Hairston’s defense was pretty terrible today as well. Both were extremely unimpressive at the plate.
Aside from those two butchering everything that came near them, the rest of the team did a nice job defensively. Gonzo, Edwin, and BP all made some nice plays, and Bruce showed off his cannon.
I still have no idea why Danny Ray is on this team. Can someone please explain why anyone thinks he’ll be a decent major leaguer? I’m just not seeing it. He’s tiny, his control is mediocre, and I just can’t see his stuff tricking a whole lot of major league hitters for very long. I see him giving up a whole boatload of homers if we leave him in the LOOGY role for very long. Bring back Bill Bray!
I’m not really worried about it long term, but Votto had a couple embarrassing at-bats today. Bruce looked pretty nice, though.
Edwin showed some nice discipline and he crushed the ball for one of his outs.
BP wasn’t swinging at everything, but he was still doing the silly swing for the fences routine when he did swing. Ugh.
Ramon Hernandez had an ugly day at the dish, but hey, at least he can catch a ball from the outfield.
Aside from the obvious Hairston/McDonald debacle, Dusty didn’t really do anything to piss me off today. I guess that’s a good thing.
Santana was pretty clearly not on his game, at least early on, so I was pretty disappointed that the Reds did nothing to capitalize on it. It’s tough to score runs on a pitcher that good and it’s tough to score runs when your lineup sucks, so you’ve gotta take advantage of every opportunity you get. That didn’t happen today.
Did anyone else notice just how girly David Wright runs? He looked ridiculous right before getting gunned down at the plate.
Not much HAVOC today. They should’ve sent Dickerson when he got on in the 8th, Putz is a hell of a reliever and with K-Rod coming on in the 9th, I think we needed to take a chance to try and get the tying run across. Edwin’s baserunning blunder was irritating, though slightly understandable thanks to Church pulling an Edmonds on that ball and making the play way harder than it should’ve been.
I think Wednesday will be more telling than today’s game. The weather should be better, we’ll have our best pitcher on the mound, T-Virus should be back, and we won’t be facing Johan. Hopefully we’ll manage at least 3 or 4 runs.
Harang
I noticed his velocity as well—seemed like in the early innings he was sitting 91-92 as opposed to the 88-89 from last year. I didn’t see any spring training games; does anyone know if his velocity was up in the spring?
Not sure if it’s a good thing, considering he was wild, although it seemed to me it was more the slider he was having trouble with.
I was impressed with his fastball command
When he was missing with that, he was missing on the corners, and he was hitting some real hard to hit spots. The slider was pretty consistently taken for a ball, though.
When I saw Adam Harang in ST, the next to the last week
His velocity appeared to be significantly off. Although his ‘numbers’ didn’t show it, the game we saw him pitch he was getting hit hard – but right at our defenders.
He had movement and was poppin’ it in there today…hopefully he’s back.
Its probably going to happen - bend over
it looked like early
that Harang had crazy movement on his fastball, and it was just running off the plate.
His velocity was normal. It did drop off a bit at the end, but i mean pitchers aren’t at full strength on opening day and because of spotty control and bad defense he threw a ton of pitches.

Sadly no one seemed to be in charge in the outfield today…these guys haven’t played much together and the weather sucked but still – a simple “Mine…or I got it” could have changed the game.
EdE made a nice play and so did BP but in general the defense (at least today’s line up) was, as we all know, dreadful.

Maybe it's just me
but I like low scoring games. The problem will be if this team is THAT much like last year’s post-Dunn team, i.e. mediocre pitching AND no offense. in that case, one they were down 4-1 the game was over. Dusty’s batting order doesn’t help very much….he like to spread the out-makers all through the line-up, thus preventing any chance of those pesky rallies.
Then again, a team counting on Jerry Hairston, AGon, Hernandez , and Taveras on offense, a team with Brandon Phillips batting 4th instead of sixth, a team whose number one RH PH is a pitcher probably doesn’t have much chance to put together a rally.
Baby steps, though. Some time this year, Walt will make a move to bring some offense in.
just found out gomes was cut
wtf is up with that? didnt nix sign a minor league deal? And mcdonald looked like shit out there, sure the catches he missed weren’t easy, but him over gomes is just plain retarded IMO. Hairston in CF and Gomes in LF would have been a much more solid opening day lineup (that is, if you want to call that “solid”).
I have some confidence in this team, but it’s waning for sure.
Minor League transactions
From Baseball America:
Cincinnati Reds
Released: RHP Derrick Conatser, RHP Enrique Garcia, RHP Justin James, RHP Luis Pardo, LHP Ron Flores, LHP David Torcise, C Eddy Rodriguez, OF Adam Greenberg, OF Jacque Jones
Recalled: OF Norris Hopper
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Josh Roenicke, RHP Daryl Thompson, OF Norris Hopper
Outrighthed to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: OF Norris Hopper
I guess Adam Greenberg’s feel-good story isn’t going to have a happy ending, at least not in Cincinnati.
Also, Eric Milton was released by the Dodgers, then re-signed to a minor league deal. He’ll be playing for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
And the Orioles purchased the contract of one of their minor league catchers yesterday. No, not Matt Wieters. Chad Moeller.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
After today's debacle
I hope that Rosales gets called up and soon. Jannish is a great defender but we are going to need all the offense we can muster. Rosales can spell Gonzo and more importantly come off the bench and actually make contact with the baseball with his bat.His bat speed in Sarasota was impressive.
Poor Darnel…he waits 11 years for today and just about everything that could go wrong did. The McDONALD was overmatched today (even though he got a hit and scored) defensively and for the most part at the plate.
Tough For Danny Hererra too. He started out throwing strikes and was just not getting the calls Then his day crumbled too.
Well enough of that…send Darnel down asap and give Danny one more shot…
Its probably going to happen - bend over

I have a feeling he is going to latch on someplace and become the next Jorge Cantu.

Rosales
Make contact? He’s not known for making contact. Janish probably makes more contact (and has more patience). Rosales’ long suit is his power.
It was one game. Against Santana, no less.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yeah
It’s not like Janish vs. Rosales made a difference in this game (or is likely to in other games).
What bugs me is the outfield. They looked really bad. Yes, Taveras will be back, and will be an improvement over Darnell. But Hairston didn’t look that great, either. I guess it’s too much to expect Dusty to play Dickerson against a lefty. In which case, I’d like to see a right-handed reserve OFer who is solid in all three outfield positions. And I don’t think Nix and McDonald qualify.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
McDonald really doesn't sound like a good defender
based on what we’ve heard from ST and today. I thought he looked bad in Zebulon last Friday. And I just found out that he’s 30. Really wondering what the upside is of having him on the roster.

Near as I can tell
McDonald’s forte is baserunning. Not sure that’s worth a roster spot. Though I guess it is, if your game plan is based on havoc.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
he made a baserunning blunder today
and was bailed out by a bad throw.

based on an admittedly small sample size
He seems to get away with that kind of thing a lot. Maybe his speed forces bad throws. Or maybe the other team just can’t believe he’s actually going.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
It wasn't really a bad throw
It just happened to hit him in the leg and bounce over Wright. Otherwise, he was out by a mile.
No offense, but...
That wasn’t vintage Johan Santana tossing against the Reds today. Based on my research, this was the first time since July 2006 that Santana had allowed as many as 4 Bases on Balls in fewer than 6 full Innings Pitched. He was wild and it wasn’t “effectively wild”. His fastball was mediocre. His breaking pitches weren’t falling in for strikes and his change was a coin flip.
The problem is that there are only a couple hitters (if that many) in the Reds’ lineup that require even a modicum of care from opposing pitchers. It’s a low-OBP unit capable of very little and one that requires the Reds to chance into Runs rather than actually produce them against even the most average Starting Pitcher. Santana was barely that today and we saw the result.
No, Santana wasn't dominant.
But take a look at what he did between the Reds’ threat in the first and the sixth when he evidently ran out of steam:
2nd inning:
- Edwin walks (No, you wouldn’t usually want to walk the leadoff man but EdE has hit Santana well in the past. Santana’s gonna wanna face Hernandez whose career numbers against him look like this: .214 / .267 / .214 w/ 4Ks in 15 PAs)
- Hernandez lines out. (Edwin caught HAVOCing between first and second.)
- Gonzalez strikes out
3rd inning:
- Harang strikes out
- Hairston lines out
- McDonald pops out
4th inning:
- Votto looked silly striking out looking (and looking and looking)
- Phillips flies out
- Bruce crushed a ball to the wall. (Rock rock, ya’ll)
- Edwin walks (Again, EdE can hit Santana.. Hernandez cannot.)
- Hernandez grounds into fielder’s choice.
5th inning:
- Gonzalez strikes out. Again.
- Owings strikes out.
- Hairston lines out.
Now, unfortunately this recap goes a long way to reinforce your point that the Reds lineup is not going to make most legitimate MLB pitchers nervous, but I’m gonna give Santana credit for a well-pitched game today. Dominant? No, but for these four innings he did pretty much* exactly what he wanted to do.

Griffey ties mark for Opening Day homers
MINNEAPOLIS — With one swing of his bat in the fifth inning Monday night, Mariners right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 612th career home run and tied a Major League record for most Opening Day home runs.
The home run off Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano leading off the inning was the eighth of Griffey’s career, tying him with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson for the all-time high.
The home run to right field also was Griffey’s 399th with the Mariners, which ranks first on the franchise’s all-time list.

Dusty's not worried
About the outfielders, about Danny Ray, or anything.
—Dusty Baker wasn’t overly alarmed with the bloopers that fell in the outfield: "Guys are learning each other, they blooped some in there, some guys are learning the field."
None of two bloopers that fell led to runs.
—On Danny Herrera, who walked two including pitcher Johan Santana, leading to what would be the winning run scoring: "He was (nervous). The pitch to Santana was close. He’s going to be all right."
—The biggest positive: "(Alex Gonzalez) playing nine innings. It’s good we have an off day tomorrow."
—On the game in general: "There weren’t many negatives. They played a good game and beat us. There’s 161 to go."
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
It's embarrassing

Oh look at that . . .
Dunn homered, doubled, drove in 4 runs, and STRUCK OUT AGAIN today and his team LOST. . . . that’s why he’s a loser.
Thoughts on Opening Day
1. The Reds offense sucked, but that is to be expected. Cold weather + Johan Santana + Hairston/McDonald at top of lineup = misery.
2. And speaking of McDonald, he’s terrible. He has no business being on a major league team, and batting him No. 2? Really? Thanks, Dusty, for giving us Corey Patterson v2.0.
3. Harang had his moments, but struggled too much with his control. He was nibbling too much, but the ump also had a tight strike zone. Reds were lucky not to lose by much more with all the runners the Mets left out there.
4. I don’t care how good of a hitter he is, if Micah Owings is your best power bat off the bench, then your bench sucks, and your team’s management has failed.
5. Still don’t understand the Gomes decision.
6. David Wright looked like Sean Casey rounding third before being thrown out at the plate. I thought he had some speed. I could’ve made it home faster.
7. Herrera….not impressed. Already of sick of hearing about his guts, and how he has “the heart of a lion.” Gag.
8. Rhodes and Weathers looked solid…..too bad Cordero is still shaky.
9. It’s just one game….at least we won’t have Hairston/McDonald leading off Wednesday. T-Virus and Dickerson can’t do any worse, can they?
You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris
I hate to say this
but McDonald is making me miss Corey Patterson. At least Patterson was reasonably competent in the outfield.
David Wright stole 34 bases in 2007. He fouled a ball off his toe in a WBC game; it might be affecting his running.
