Gomes cut, not sure if he'll go to Triple A
From the Fay:
===
The Reds cut Jonny Gomes. He has an offer to go to Triple-A
"I'm not sure," he said.
Gomes seemed like a semi-lock to make it.
"I'm a little surprised," he said. "I had a good spring. I played left, right. I went to first base with open arms. But it didn't work out. They can't keep everybody."
That would seem to indicate Darnell McDonald and Laynce Nix both made the club. It also indicates that Jerry Hairston Jr. will probably platoon with Chris Dickerson in left.
Update from BK (11:50AM): Rosales was also told today that he'll be starting the year in AAA, via the Fay's twitter. By my count this leaves 28 in camp, with 3 cuts to go today. Could this mean something else is in the works? Stay tuned...
Update from BK (12:30PM): Janish has made the team. Also, Bray sent to AAA, probably means Herrera makes the roster. Congrats Danny Ray! 2 more cuts...
Update from BK (2:25PM): Castillo and Bailey are the last two cuts. McDonald made the roster over Gomes because Willy's sick.

I must say

Me too
His production has kind of dropped off after his hot start in the spring, but as a platoon partner for Dickerson, he was the ideal guy, plus an electric personality that would go really well in this clubhouse. I’d say this opens the door for a Geoff Jenkins signing, but he’s another lefty.

Has to mean
we are signing a player or two:
Assuming 13 position guys on the roster, we Currently have
Catchers (2)
Hernandez
Hanigan
OF (3)
Bruce
Taveras
Dickerson
INF (5)
Votto
Phillips
Gonzalez
Hairston
Encarnacion
That’s 10 spots…. Only 3 guys we haven’t heard from is Darnell McDonald, Lance Nix, and Paul Janish. Surely Gome would have made team over McDonald or Nix. I say Walt’s up to something.

by Geki on Apr 5, 2009 12:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well for the most part you are right
but Bray hasn’t been healthy all spring, and hasn’t been all that great. Herrera has. I understand that move. Comes is arguable. He was on fire the first 2 weeks of camp, but has been not hitting the last couple of weeks. Still, I think he is a more viable option than Nix and McDonald. However, if Walt brings someone else in, it could be a better move IMO.

yeah, I don't have a beef with sending down Bray
He wasn’t pitching well, and I don’t think it would be doing him any favors to throw him out there to get shelled. Herrera won, fair and square.
Bray can get straightened out in Louisville, and come back when he’s ready. It’s not like we’re losing him.
Gomes, I don’t understand. Unless there’s a trade in the works.

It's spring training.
I honestly couldn’t care less about the actual results. Bray shouldn’t have had to earn a spot on this team in ST, he did that last year. If he’s hurt, put him on the DL. If he’s not, let him pitch in a game that actually matters before you send him down. He’s too good to send to AAA for fucking Danny Ray Herrera.
I love that there isn’t a single player on our bench who can hit even a little tiny bit, though. Nix and McDonald should feel lucky if they get a job in AAA somewhere, and now they’re on our major league team. Hanigan’s a generic back-up catcher with a pretty weak stick. Hairston isn’t gonna hit anything like he did last year. I’ll call it now, Hairston won’t beat a .700 OPS on the season. And while I like the defense Janish brings, the fact that we might ever call on him to pinch hit scares the hell out of me. He’s Juan Castro.
If Walt doesn’t make at least two additions by tomorrow, then I think it’s pretty much already been decided where this team is going this season.

Makes sense
I think they’re worried about Gonzalez holding up and want a real SS on the roster, lest we repeat the olé fest of last year.
Gomes seemed like a cool guy, but I don’t think it makes a big difference whether it’s him or Hairston as the RHB-half in RF. Hairston probably wouldn’t hit as well as Gomes but would make up for it with the glove.

Rotoworld
has this to say:
Congratulations to Cincinnati on having an athletic bench to match it’s athletic lineup: Jerry Hairston Jr., Darnell McDonald, Paul Janish, Laynce Nix and Ryan Hanigan. The one member of the group with any power has a career OBP of .274, so manager Dusty Baker won’t ever have to worry about the bases being clogged up.

GABP built for speed?
Ya think Walt would try to load up on power hitters if the home ballpark was Petco?
I guess speed and defense is kind of devalued currently and maybe they’re trying to go against the grain. I still dont a terribly talented defensive team (3B, SS, CF, C have issues).

I don't think speed and defense are devalued at all.
If anything, the Reds are late to that party, which is why we’re stuck with replacement level players like McDonald, Nix, Taveras, and Janish to fill the speed and defense role instead of players who actually provide value along with speed and defense (actually, the Reds strategy seems to be speed or defense. How many players on the team actually provide both?)

But this likely means that Dickerson will be starting all the games in LF
which, don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a nice player, but there has to be some power in this outfield besides Bruce. Maybe I’m not buying into the whole HAVOC mentality as much as Dusty and Walt are, but did Darnell McDonald and Laynce Nix deserve to make the team over him?

What worries me is how much pressure they’re putting on Hairston (and Dickerson, to a lesser extent). Call me unconvinced that Hairston can handle starting 4-5 days a week for an entire season (which is what could happen if Dickerson can’t hit lefties and Gimpzalez returns to form).

I'm wondering if the bean counters have taken over
A lot of teams cut back on their spending with the economy going bad. Maybe the Reds decided that Gomes wasn’t worth even his under-$1 million contract. Nix and McDonald are likely the cheaper options. It would be different if the Reds were going to contend this year, but it seems pretty clear they’re not.

Taveras was making the roster no matter what
He has a two-year contract. If the Reds cut him, they still have to pay him his $6 million.
Gomes’ contract was only if he made the roster. If he had, he would have earned $600,000 plus incentives, while Nix and McDonald will probably make minimum wage.

he’s done that just twice in his career. GABP will help him some, but it’s not going to had more than 2 or 3 on his total. So yeah, maybe 15-20, but if that’s our #3 power bat from the right side, well, that sucks. Especially since our #1 and #2 are probably 25 HR guys at best.

And from what it sounds like from Fay, Arroyo’s meeting with Walt today to see if he needs to go on the DL, and if he’s hurt, then Masset and Bailey both make the team. From this article, however, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen, so we’ll likely have one more decision toady.

He seemed like a real character, but also fiery and passionate. He seemed to have the ability to keep a locker room loose, but to also give guys the verbal (or physical) ass-kicking everyone sometimes needs. Personally, he reminded me a little of Greg Vaughn in that regard. I was really looking forward to having him on the team. I’m pretty baffled that Nix has a spot.

Gomes is not worth it
because he is a bad defensive player.
If this is sign the Reds are committed to fielding a marked improved defense team- I think its a great direction going forward to pair with their young starters.
Playing Hairston/ Dickerson in LF means the Reds will have a big plus number defensively at LF, SS and probably RF. Doesnt add up to the TB upgrade last year- but definitely good be plus 50 runs.

Dickerson will be a plus fielder in LF.
Gonzales/Janish will be around a 20 run improvement at SS from last year.
And Ed E will be horrible at 3rd just like every other year he has played there.

Plusses
Votto and BP. Thats it.
All the other positional players are average or below average (without doing statistical data). I’d say EE is in the middle of the NL 3B pack and Bruce will certainly move to an upper tier RF’er in the near future.

If Arroyo would just let us backdate-DL him to March 29th,
then he could take his first start on April 13th, just 8 days later than he would normally. Instead, we’ll unnecessarily be cutting a player (Gomes) and will have one fewer arm in the pen for the first 5 games.

i HATE BP hitting cleanup? He’s a nice 6 or 7 hitter on a contending ballclub.
Did anyone catch Ken Broo this am? The dude from Baseball Prospectus says he’d hit Jay Bruce leadoff. And Wily 9th.
The problem with the opening day lineup is that there are 4 eight hole hitters in the lineup (Gonzalez, Hernandez, McDonald, Hairston).

You and everyone else.
BP is no cleanup hitter, but where else can we put him?
Remember: CF hits first, shortstop second. Since we have to alternate RH and LH hitters, he could only hit fourth, sixth, or eighth. Eighth is taken by either the catcher, leaving only fourth and sixth for EdE and BP.
And of course, EdE had higher OBP and slugging last year (and higher OBP the previous year), and hence needs to bat lower in the order.

If Dusty really thinks hard about it, sometimes he bats the LF second and SS eighth. So eighth is for either catcher or SS.
He prefers to keep it simpler than that.

by Gray on Apr 5, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm replying to this particular comment
since it is the best one here and I want to extend on the fluid logic rigid thinking of the management.
So many of the roster decisions are influenced by the (prolly properly) perceived fragility of Alex Gonzalez. If he could play 6 out of 7 days, Dusty would be content to let Rosales or Hairston sub as needed. But the prospect of either receiving significant playing time there is (understandably) frightening enough to necessitate Janish’s presence.
Since Hairston now gets NO shortstop AB’s, and when the Sea Bass plays he can’t always hit second because it is such a havocy spot and he is so sensitive, Dusty solves two problems in going with Hairston over Gomes in that a). he has a #2 hitter, and b). his below replacement value buddy gets a start where he cannot muck things up in the field too much.
Hairston’s imagined versatility in actuality hamstrings his team’s lineup construction options because while he can play many positions; he cannot play many of them well enough to justify his very average offense.
If Dusty would have just conceded to start Dickerson (who I’m certain is better CF than McDonald) in center for a day or two, we could have kept Gomes and fielded something like the best lineup we can possible field (which is of course an anti-viral one) on Opening Day; instead in front of those impressionable, expendable income-having faux fans, we field a getaway day lineup.
Tomorrow’s lineup:
McDonald CF
Hairston LF
Votto 1B
Phillips 2B
Bruce RF
Encarnacion 3B
Gonzalez SS
Hernandez C

Also idea for a lefty bench bat….Jim Edmonds. Not near as good as he once was, but I think he’d be better than Laynce Nix off the bench.

I don't think it's just because Taveras is sick
I think Taveras being sick made them think about what they would do in case of injury. Dusty’s on the record worrying about Dickerson’s durability, and if he’s not, he should be worried about Hairston’s. So McDonald is their CF insurance.
The problem is, I’m not sure he’s all that good a CFer. Actually, I think I’d rather have Bruce, even though he’s slated for RF.

Worrying about guys' durability...
would be pretty much the dumbest reason ever to risk losing a player like Gomes.
I mean, even without McDonald, we’d have Bruce, Dickerson, Taveras, Nix, and Hairston on the roster, all of whom could play CF. We’d have to lose a lot of guys not to have anyone who could at least pass for a centerfielder. And given what I’ve seen of McDonald in center, he’s not way above these other guys in fielding skills.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.

Not to rain too much on the sadness
dumbest reason ever to risk losing a player like Gomes.
Just to play devil’s advocate: You are talking about a guy with durability issues of his own, who was released from his former team, and, unless something happened in the overnight hours, couldn’t find another job.
I’m not excited about LF or this team’s ability to score runs and all, but it doesn’t make sense to treat Gomes like he’s an accomplished difference-making ballplayer when he is not.

Oh, I agree.
By “a player like Gomes,” I don’t mean “someone who’s consistently performed at a high level.” However, he has a lot more upside than any of our backup outfielders.

If they made these moves, or if they’d kept some of the people they sent down, either way the truth is they are going to suck.
The Reds have done nothing in the past three years to make me think that they are going to be good anytime soon.
I’ll still have fun this year because I’ll get to go to the ballpark. Also, we are going to get to see Bruce and Votto for a few years, so that will be nice. But, I’m going to the games to have fun…not with the expectations of the Reds winning.

Dear Teewrecks 44...may I call you Rexz?
There is a definable pecking order at RR. As soon as he gets a chance Slyde will post a graph with all kinds of lines and vectors and sabremtertic stuff on it so you’ll know who is who…until then just remember I’m the oldest guy who hangs around here and the only serious bowler. Other than that you’re on your own.

bad timing
You shoulda timed it so it was born in the off-season. No missing opening day for the kid’s birthday party that way. ;-)

Au contraire
with any luck, Opening Day will be the kid’s party.

Ah, but Brian B is smart!
Opening Day is quite late this year, thanks to the WBC. Most years, the kid’s birthday will be well after Opening Day.

Gomes against lhp
You can’t totally overlook that he was only .182/.281/.424/.705 in 99 at-bats in 2008. I think he would revert back to better form and I still wanted to have him over Nix. Still, it’s worth noting for a guy we wanted to platoon.
