Win a copy of The Machine in the 2009 Red Reporter Predictions Contest
A lot can happen over the course of a season. Players can have unexpectedly good years. Pitchers can suddenly forget how to throw strikes. An ill-timed slide can end a player's season in April. The season of baseball can be very hard to predict.
But we try to do it anyway.
The year, Red Reporter is offering up a chance at perhaps the greatest book ever about perhaps the greatest team ever by perhaps the greatest sports writer, well, ever. Joe Posnanski's new book about The Big Red Machine - aptly titled The Machine - doesn't even come out until August 18th September 9th, and already it's being hailed as one of the finest works of non-fiction ever. I mean, I'm assuming it has, at least by Mrs. Posnanski.
Red Reporter will be giving away a shiny new copy of the book in November to the reader who can best predict the final standings as well as the playoffs and post-season awards. I know that it will be nearly 3 months after the book is released, but you are going to be so busy with the Reds playoff hunt that you won't have time to read the book until then anyway, so chill out. Besides, it's not my fault they are releasing the book so far before the end of the season.
So here's how you win. Between now and 11:59pm on Monday, April 6th, fill out the order of the divisions based on how you think they will finish at the end of the season (be sure to mark the Wild Card winners). Then choose who will face each other in the League Championship Series and then who will face off in the world series followed by who will be the world champion at the end of the season. Also pick the winner of the league MVP for each league, the CY Young winners, and the Rookies of the year. Whoever is the best prognosticator wins.
Scoring explanation and an easy to fill out chart after the jump.
Scoring
- You will receive 1 point for every team whose position you get right within their division.
- You will receive 2 points for each correctly identified Wild Card winner.
- One point is taken off of your total for every position a team finishes away from where you predicted their final finish. For example, say you predicted this:
1. Reds
2. Astros (WC)
3. Brewers
4. Cubs
5. Pirates
6. Cardinals
But it ended up this way:
1. Reds
2. Cubs (WC)
3. Brewers
4. Cardinals
5. Astros
6. Pirates
You would receive 1 point each for the Reds and Brewers, and lose 1 point for the Pirates, 2 points for the Cubs and Cardinals, 3 points for the Astros, for a total of -6 points. Don't worry, hopefully you can make up those points in the playoffs. - You will receive +5 points for each team you get right in the League Championship Series.
- You will receive +7 points for each team you get right in the World Series.
- You will receive +10 point for correctly predicting the World Champion.
- You will receive +5 points for each correct prediction of the 6 main post-season awards.
- The tie breaker will be who can most closely guess the total number of runs scored by the Reds offense in 2009 (we will not be playing Price Is Right rules on this tie breaker, so you can guess too high and still win).
The reader with the highest score wins the prize.
To enter, just fill out this chart in the comments by Monday, April 6th at 11:59pm.
