Spring Game 35 Thread: Reds vs. Futures
We've finally reached the point of the last exhibition game of what has seemed like an excessively long Spring Training this year. Just two more days until Opening Day!
Johnny Cueto hopes to redeem the big league squad after being embarrassed by the minor leaguers yesterdy by a score of 12-4. As you know, Cueto has been outstanding so far this Spring, only allowing 7 runs in the 30.2 innings he's pitched for the entire Spring. He did walk 4 batters in his last outing, including 3 in one inning, but he had walked only 3 batters in the previous 25 innings to that point. Hopefully he can maintain a little more focus this start. Unlike Arroyo last night, Cueto knows many of these hitters as he was teammates with some of them in the minors and has faced others in Winter League. I expect him to be a little more on his game today than Arroyo was last night.
Pitching for the futures is Jordan Smith, a 23-year old right-hander who finished the year in Chattanooga in 2008 after pitching very well in High-A Sarasota. He pitched a couple of times in Spring camp with the big league squad, giving up 4 runs in 3.2 innings pitched while striking out 2 and walking 2. He's not a major prospect, but if he can manage to maintain his precise control, he could have some success in the future.
The game is being broadcast on 700WLW and possibly other Reds affiliates. If you can't get the audio, this should be the Gameday link.

Does this game count?
Can they still backdate him if they decide to DL him after all?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i think i heard
that if a game is against minor leaguers, it doesn’t count as a game and they can backdate it.
And I think...
this is the actual Gameday link.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
they switched the teams up
this morning they had a directory set up for the other game. Now they have both. bastards.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Gomes
Did I really see that Marty said the last roster spot was down between Jonny Gomes and Laynce Nix? Is Gomes really a question mark at this point? Is Hopper going to make it instead?
Hopper is not going to make it
He’s already been outrighted to Louisville.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Oh, I forgot about that.
I thought Gomes was a sure thing since he was the right handed platoon option. It just doesn’t make sense that he’s on the bubble. What do they want him to do?
well
Is it possible that Marty doesn’t know what he’s talking about?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yup.
But it’s also possible that Marty is just regurgitating whatever minor detail the organization has offered him. We all think of Marty as ‘telling it like it is’ but surely there are times when he just goes along to get along. To do otherwise in this situation would require him to offer insight, perspective and maybe even nuance and Marty don’t play that.

I was watching the Mets take on the Red Sox in brand new Citeh Field
The Metros were getting shellacked, 6-0 in the 4th. Nothing was particularly standing out as threatening about them, except that David Wright is apparently a pretty decent defender. Who knew? Also, their left fielder made a really nice play in the corner to dig out a Pedroia screamer down the line and throw him out by a mile at second. But since Sheffield is likely to be in left when they face us, it doesn’t really matter.
Thom says Zach Stewart is going to be a starter this year?
really?

Yeah, Frazier screwed up on the bases, but hung in the rundown for a while.
Then the runner on third broke for home and was out trying. Havocy.

I need to know about C-Dick’s condition, and tHom is talking about the parade on Monday.

Yeah, I've worked broadcasts before.
But even if tHom has no news, he should come back from break saying that there was an injury to Dickerson, and he’s being checked out by the training staff. “And we’ve dispatched someone to the clubhouse, and as soon as we have an update, we’ll pass it along.”
