"I believe Oswalt acted alone."

The Reds faced Oswalt.  You know the drill.

Goat of the Game

Francisco Cordero.  SoSo gave up three runs in the 9th inning to blow the game.

Key Plays

  • The Reds couldn't string hits together.  They had eight hits and two walks, including two hits apiece by Alex Gonzalez (who's rounding nicely into form) and Unstoppable Joey Votto ("I'm the Joeggernaut, bitch!" -- nah), but only managed to produce one run.
  • Cueto was nails again tonight, going 7 innings, striking out five and only walking one.  It was a better performance than Oswalt.  His only mistake was giving up a home run to Lance Berkman, which I guess means he's officially a Red.
  • Chris Dickerson was removed from the game after doing a heada into Tejada.
  • Only 12,365 in attendance tonight.  To put that in perspective, 14,832 people went to see the Los Angeles Sol beat the Washington Freedom on March 30.  Yes, those are women's professional soccer teams.

It’s a beautiful evening in Cincy. Then again, if they know that they’re going to be subjected to BP and Edwin in the lineup facing Oswalt…

from the riverfront park below:

They actually do open the bridge one day a year, for guided walks. St. Patrick’s Day. You can’t go all the way across, because the walkway is not finished. (They limit everyone to one green beer, to make sure no one falls off.)

I went Friday also

park on Main St between 4th and 5th st - $8 garage parking. or park at the levee for $5 and walk across the Taylor Southgate bridge…the kids love that.

bring your own food and drinks to the ballpark. each person is allowed to bring a soft sided cooler. your food cost is greatly diminished.

but your biggest cost was the overpriced ducats. almost any other weekend you can get tix for well under $20 each.

by obc2 on Apr 28, 2009 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

you can get 4 tix for $20 total at the ticket window

and kids don’t care where they sit in a ballpark – they just like to be there.

so we’ve decided that four people can go to a ballgame for $22 total plus whatever the food they brought from home costs.

problem solved.

Anyone think Edwin may still be hurt?

Remember, Edwin had a Wrist and a Shoulder injury in Spring Training. Well the Fay reported this nugget:

Look, I love EdE, and the fact he wants to stick out the injury. But if it is hurting him to throw, surely he is doing something different on his swing. If he was hitting at all, I could see trying to play thru it, but he is not. Maybe give him a DL and a rehab stint? Give him 5 or so days off, let him do a rehab, and get him back on track by mid May.

The Reds have Rosales and Wes Bankston raking at AAA. Bankston has played 1B, 3B, LF, and RF this year.

Block quote didnt take...but it was from CTR not Fay
As for Encarnacion, Baker thinks it’s just another slow start.

“His timing’s off, he’s not tired,” Baker said.

Encarnacion’s injuries in the spring threw off his plans.

“I guess he’s a slow starter, after three years in a row,” Baker said. “We wanted to get him as many bats this spring more than he ever has before, like I did with D. Lee when I first got there because he was known as a slow starter. D. Lee went on to win a batting title and 46 home runs. I wanted to do that with Edwin, but I couldn’t because he hurt his wrist and then he hurt his shoulder, which didn’t help. He couldn’t play in spring training as much as I wanted him to.”

Baker pointed out several Hall of Famers were slow starters Eddie Murray (.271 career in April, .287 career) and Ryne Sandberg (.230 in April, .285 overall).

“Some guys are April, May hitters and in July you can’t find them,” Baker said. “Some guys it takes time to get their timing going — going to AAA isn’t the answer. John (Fay) might think it’s the answer, but I don’t think it’s the answer. He needs reps.”

Baker said his shoulder doesn’t hurt when he swings, but does when he throws.

Excuse me, Mr. Baker.

Over his career, June has been Edwin’s “best month.” Here are his career average stats in June:

.292 / .389 / .492

Here are Edwin’s Aprils:

*2006: .288 / .387 / .550
*2007: .221 / .294 / .260
*2008: .287 / .374 / .564

Here are Edwin’s Mays:

*2006: .242 / .343 / .396
*2007: .286 / .366 / .476
*2008: .172 / .228 / .247

Dusty remembers the most recent “early month” of Edwin’s and remembers that he was lousy and then just lets the diarrhea fall out of his mouth.

his first year with Dusty was his first year with the Cubs.

I know this because I spent so much money on him at the fantasy auction people thought I was nuts. When he exploded in April, people thought I should up with the “I told you so’s.” I believe the term asshole was added to that pretty liberally, as well.

wow... I'm using RR too much...

I definitely just “rec’d” one of my friends’ statuses on facebook…

They seem to be slightly confused.

keeping score question...

when a player hits a single its marked as a single line _
lets say next player grounds to second 4-3…runner advances to second
next batter singles and runner scores from second

how would this look on the scorecard ??
do you circle the run on the original batter or the batter who gets the RBI ?

Score so it makes sense to you.

I’ve seen so many variations, and have over time developed my own way of scoring…

I write FC 4-3, and move the runner up to second. I circle the run on the runner that has scored.

That's the way to go.

The only thing I have yet to really perfect is what to do when a team bats around. Never enough space for that.

Only 12,365 in attendance tonight. To put that in perspective, 14,832 people went to see the Los Angeles Sol beat the Washington Freedom on March 30. Yes, those are women's professional soccer teams.

So who would you rather watch?
this

Or THIS

or this

I want to be there when a trailer full of coffins slams into a an ambulance full of terminally ill Bolivians. Or when the Reds win a WS..whichever comes first....

im not down on this loss

didnt get to follow it, but I like how cueto’s pitching.

It’s rough against oswalt and our bullpen was due for a loss, so meh. Hoping for some batting turn-around against wandy.

Oh really?

Against this Wandy?

Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?

yeah

hoping for a turn-around

by cokane on Apr 28, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

This sums it up for me

We know that there’s no room for error with the offense. When two key hitters are slumping like EdE and BP, we’ll struggle to score. We don’t necessarily know what to expect from Cueto, so it was great to see him throw peas at the knees.

Also, is it too early to start thinking about flipping Arthur Rhodes? Before he forgets to pay the geriatric reliever witch?

by ken on Apr 28, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

you kidding?

ive already had dreams of trading Rhodes and Weathers in a package deal for a young SS and a few young pitchers.

Consider the Eskimos.
