Holding my breath...
I live in the Cincinnati area and today I heard on 700 WLW P Doc was saying how he wants to "Ride this wave of winning" and "get completely pumped up." Where as I am just as excited as him and a lot of other people, still I hold my breath. I remember maybe 4 seasons ago I'm not sure exactly what season it was but the Reds were very decent at the start. I think through 20 games they were in first place and it seemed that we finally had a good team to cheer for and the feeling was all positive. Almost the next week everything went to hell in a hand basket instantly. I'm not saying I think this will happen again with this team. I'm just afraid of letting myself get too involved because of what Cincinnati teams have done to me in the past and the high probablility of it happening to me again. I don't want to feel that extreme dissapointment again. I used to live and die by the Bengals until the 2006 season tore me to shreds. The reds have done this to me before as well. I feel like if I don't get my hopes up and "get pumped" than I'll be a bad fan wich we have an abundance of in Cincinnati. There in lies my dilemma....
Get pumped or to not get pumped? That is the question.
Any sports fan wisdom would be appreciated especially if you're from the 513.

I mean, Harang and Cueto probably aren't sustainable at this rate
and Votto may not be. Bullpen is going to crash and burn eventually. But everyoneelseontheoffense will at least get a bit better.
Optimism is fun, I agree, but it ought to at least be tempered. But this may be the year and blah blah blah, right?

614 here, but i will lend my perspective
I can see the Reds being competitive for portions of the season, possibly nipping at some heels in September, but I don’t see them leading the division or being front runners for the wildcard for more than a week or two cumulatively over the course of the season.
The offense will eventually level-off at a mediocre level. Lots of question marks here. Will Bruce step forward? Will Votto keep up something like this? T-Virus, aging vets, and Dickerson. I think we have probably seen the best that EdE and BP have to offer, and they will drift towards their career numbers. My only guess as to how it will all shake out is: nothing to write home about.
The starters will keep the Reds in a lot of games, but the youngsters (and Arroyo) will occasionally get rocked — and I do not foresee many four, five run deficits being overcome
(partly because) I have to believe, with Cy, that this bullpen will have some serious ups and downs. I think Masset will eventually force his own release, as for Rhodes, Weathers, and Lincoln . . . we’ll see. plenty of potential help at Louisville if any old men have to hit the DL
I could see the Reds flirting with .500, but I don’t expect it. I say watch the young guys and keep an eye on Louisville and Carolina. I am sure we will see a lot of guys in September.

bottom line
if they stay healthy…especially the rotation.
the rotation is strong.the lineup is suspect but IF they stay healthy and make some strides…it can be interesting.

hmm
Where could this team possibly go from where they are now? Are they going to falter as we are all expecting and waiting for? Is it smart to “ride the wave” as Dougherty says. Personally I think this team has some serious ass kicking potential. But how long can Cordero keep this up? How long untill “Stormy” Weathers shows how he got that nickname. Owings obviously can’t be a starting pitcher unless he gets 8 runs in support, this team aint doin that. Will Taveras keep getting on base all the time? Will Votto hit .300 this season? Jay Bruce shows random signs of excellent patience and quick contact hitting at the plate but sometimes he looks like hes just some random guy up there off the street without a clue. I know Hernandez won us a game in Houston but seriously, we need a catcher who can hit the damn ball and not ground out every at bat. I’m not asking for a .300 hitting catcher, just a decent .260 y’know? And what really erks me almost more than anything is Edwin. What kind hitter is this guy? Honestly, what does EE do on a regular basis? He is a contact hitter yet one of his big stories from last season was that he was focusing on hitting a bunch of homeruns and now he is focusing apparently on patience at the plate. Somebody needs to just tell this guy to go out there and get hits and be comfortable.
Is Joey Votto better than Chris Sabo?
Lots to think about with this team…
by Sukottosan on Apr 24, 2009 12:13 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Joey Votto is MUCH better than Chris Sabo
Sabo’s best season (1991) wasn’t as good at Votto’s rookie season. The only advantage that Sabo had was he played a harder defensive position, but he didn’t play it well enough to make up for the offensive difference.
We all know that the bullpen is going to have some slip ups, just as we’re all fairly confident that both BP and EdE will start hitting again. I think this team will fluctuate back and forth and likely end up plus-or-minus 5-games around .500. There will be stretches of dominance and there will be stretches of misery. Right now, they are on the positive side.
I say just ride the wave and enjoy it while it is going good. There’s probably a bad stretch sitting right around the corner, but for now things are fun. Bask, I say! Bask!

REDS REDS REDS BLAH BLAH
Just for a moment lets talk bowling…
Although the Madisonville Comets took 3 out of 4 tonight, your RR representative, MADS was not on his game
I am ashamed to even list my scores but feel the need for an internal purging;
130
168
188
There now you know even Madville can have an EdE kind of night, a BP AB, a Mike Lincoln inning…
Oh and by the way Joey Votto is better now than Chris Sabo and will be in the record books long after Sabo’s name is remembered like Gene Freese’.
I predict, and not even boldly that Votto and Bruce will go down in Red’s History as one of the great 3-4 hitter in club history..
Back to bowling…you don’t know what its like to be so close to winning the league then only to slip – once, twice suddenly we are in 5th place (out of 14) and go into position round with only a faint chance of getting as high as 3rd.. Those of you who are still young..mark my words – Bowling is a terrible addiction fraught with old smelly men – women who are thin and stretched or bulbous and loud and also the oily lanes that reduce you to a whimper..
these 20 something girls are being eaten alive by bowling addiction

just a 650'er here, watching Extra Innings
I’m optimistic about a modest goal: a winning season. I think we’ve got a decent shot at 82 wins, and I would count that as a Very Good Thing — especially since there’s more help on the way in Alonso, Frazier, Stubbs, Thompson, etc. It’s not too hard to see 2009 shaping up as barely above .500, and 2010-11 being playoff-contention years.
Now that’s exciting.

Honestly, I have only been in the LA airport.
Ok, but seriously…
I suppose we would need to begin by defining the terms “harm” and “good” and “development.”
“Development” as we currently know it tends to do more “harm” than “good” in the sense that it is harmful that the gap between those that have too much and those that have not very much is increasing. The majority of the world is not being included in any sort of “development,” and many of those that are face exploitation and environmental degradation.
That said, go, experience it and decide for yourself what those terms mean.

that's something that might be hard for many Reds fans to stomach
but the Reds are going to have to trade some of these prospects we’ve been drooling over. It’s almost a necessity, otherwise it would be a waste of talent. Look for Walt to try to work deals to bring in pitching some time in the next two years. The good news, if the talent we have keeps developing positively, there should be plenty of depth in the pipeline to deal.

The team starts winning consistently, improving attendance and revenue. Then Waly pulls the trigger on a huge deadline deal in 2010 or more likely 2011, landing a huge name who then signs an extension, ensuring many winning years thereafter.
And everyone lives happily ever after.

I think what the Brewers did last year is the more likely path
Trading for a big name for the stretch run and then losing that player to free agency.
This is why I think it is very important to lock up young players before arbitration hits. Get that cost certainty so that you know what you can afford to do on the trade market.

Along those lines,
What do you think the odds are the Reds follow the Tampa Bay route and lock up Votto (Bruce if he develops this season) for 6 or 7 years for a 40 million or so deal? Maybe do the same with Cueto, but pitchers are obviously a riskier bet.

Just as an interesting example of how winning colors perception
I was listening to Mark Packer’s radio show yesterday (Billy Packer’s son), and the producer of the show is an enormous Cubs fan from Chicago. And he and the whole crew started talking about how the Reds had a really potent offensive team this year. Nothing about pitching, nothing about how terribly over half the lineup is hitting, just that the offense was great.
It was strange to listen to.

Well, they just handled Zambrano.
Now ready yourself for the next four days during which the limited offense goes up against Javier Vasquez, Derek Lowe and Roy Oswalt. At first I thought, “Hey, at least they’re not facing lefties.” Then I checked the Reds splits and discovered that what little mashing they’re doing is coming at the expense of left handed pitching. So I don’t know what to expect between now and Tuesday (when, by the way, they face Wandy Rodriguez who just shut them out.)
I like this team (even Gonzalez and Hernandez) but I don’t know what to expect in the short run (ie 2009). I don’t think I’m getting excited for anything more than a run at .500 (maaaaybe 85 wins) until Jockety gets us another hitter. And I don’t think

I do not know the factual answer to that but I'll riff with it.
I would suspect that it was organically derived from some sort of sport nomenclature, perhaps horse racing? Seems to me that sport diatribes lend themselves to more excessive exaggeration when comparing one thing to another that has no universally accepted means of comparison (my example: “Babe Ruth was better than Ty Cobb and it isn’t even close”). And the rhetoric needs to be outsized to match the champion boast. I really have no idea, but I gave it a whack.

Joey Vott vs. Ted Kluszewski

No No No
The real question is between Big Klu and The real Mayor – Tony Perez
Votto’s has a long way to go before he becomes as personable as Tony.
Or as creep as Dick Wagner

I didn't think I'd get an answer on that one.
I just want to see where Joey Votto sits y’know? Theres a lotta old school guys on here what do you guys think? Is Joey Votto the real deal or not? Is he anything like young Lee May or youn Klu? I don’t know if theres any that are that old school but I’m guessing there is people who can answer that question.

From my perspective as a 60 yr. old guy who started taking the Red's seriously at age 8
Votto is the real deal. Period.
His confident demeanor, his no nonsense, disciplined approach to the game is more developed than either Lee May or Tony Perez were in their 2nd season. I really don’t remember Klu so i can’t say anything there…Votto stands like a major league ball player…he wills himself to hit the ball…he’s not too high not to low always seems to be even keeled. But not with out a sense of humor.
Oh yeah – the guy can fucking hit. He is disciplined and intelligent in reading the pitchers, their pitches and can hit the ball where it is pitched with authority and power.
He’s a little wooden as far as being personable but so was Lou Gherig…(although Votto is not him.)
He’s the real deal, a keeper and will be a productive better than average hitter and defender for a long time to come.
I guarantee it.

well
Klu’s career OPS+ was 123. Votto’s last year was 128. Klu’s TotalZone has him rated as an average-to-below-average defensive 1B, but those numbers only go back to 1955, so they do not account for the beginning of his career. Votto’s UZR last year rated him as a solidly above-average defensive 1B.
so you make an argument that Klu was a solidly average 1B over a number of years. that’s not Hall-worthy, but its still valuable. Votto played like a slightly-above-average 1B last year, in his rookie year. he has the potential to get better, but probably not perennial-all-star better. in the end, we just dont know about Votto yet. he’s got his entire career ahead of him. but if he plays like he did in his rookie year for 10 years or so, then Votto > Klu.
Consider the Eskimos.

I'd have to agree
My only objection is that guys like Klu and Perez seemed to just have got it done, period. Constantly I might add. I’m worried we’re all giong to see this from Votto but then see him slip into Jason Larue type hitting because he reminds me of Larue sometimes. Not the .200 average but just in his aproach and overall contact style. If I remember right wasn’t Larue excellent in his early years and then struggled? This team badly needs consistant hitting. Not just consistant slugging but consistant contact and RBI production. I say Votto has got it as long as he doesnt slip into the Jason Larue/Brandon Larson sickness.

LaRue put up one OPS+ over 100 in 2005
other than that he was pretty below average for a position player, and probably about average for a catcher, but he made up for it with a lot of pass balls.
