Now that's a road trip! Reds beat Cubs 7-1 for their 7th victory on the trip
The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game
Aaron Harang. 7 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. The man is a machine.
Honorable mention: Joey Votto - 4 for 5, 2 doubles, HR, 2 RBI
Key Plays
- Jay Bruce singled in the 4th to drive in Chris Dickerson who had tripled earlier in the inning.
- Willy Taveras singled to lead-off the 6th and then went to third on an errant pickoff attempt. He later scored on Votto's double.
- The Cubs scored their only run in the 6th inning when Alfonso Soriano singled and then went to second on Chris Dickerson's error. Ryan Theriot followed with a single to score the run. That was the closest the Cubs came to a serious threat all day as they only had 2 other innings where multiple batters reached base.
- After a Brandon Phillips walk and Ramon Hernandez single, Alex Gonzalez managed to finally have a big hit this season with a single that RF Micah Hoffpaiur mishandled. Both runners scored to give the Reds a 4-1 lead.
- Votto tacked on another run with his 3rd home run of the season in the 8th.
- The Reds capped off the scoring with a 2-run Dickerson single in the 9th that plated both Ramon Hernandez and Willy Taveras.
Other Notes
- Harang was outstanding again today. Not only did he prevent the Cubs offense from getting any traction, he did it very efficiently. He pitched into the 8th inning and threw just 105 pitches. That's the kind of outing I'd like to see from him every time out.
- In one game the Reds scored almost twice as many runs for Harang as they had all season to this point. So he won't have to beat the crap out of the dugout today.
- Joey Votto is the awesome.
- I can't say enough about how great a 7-3 road trip to start the season makes me feel. Just an incredible way to start the year.

We can build on this!
But seriously this seems like the type of team that, because of all the youngsters, needed to get off to a good start to build up their confidence. Its like in a basketball game when you let a team hang around and they actually start to believe they can win. Hopefully the Reds are starting to believe and this will continue.

Yes, we've got youngsters and yes, winning is better than losing.
But Joey Votto needs confidence building like George Clooney needs FarmersOnly.com.

Its amazing what having 5 starters who can keep you in a ballgame can do. Unfortunately, the Reds only have 5 hitters who can keep them in a ballgame, too.

I don't think Votto really even has a shot
Unless he hits 3 or 4 more home runs, I’m not sure he’ll register on the list. Going into today, he was 20th in AVG, 32nd in OBP, 27th in SLG, and 26th in OPS. His best category is RBI, and he’s 9th there. He’s been impressive, but there are too many other players having better starts.

Plus he is backing an expansion effort for MLS in St. Louis
Although since the latest clubs were awarded to Vancouver and Portland, the most likely bet would be to get a relocated team. Say, one that couldn’t get a stadium built, and was playing in a delapidated football stadium that they were losing tens of millions of dollars in. Like my beloved DC United.

I don’t really suspect him of PEDs any more than I’d suspect any MLBer at this point. The guy is just solid, and doesn’t look unnaturally huge or anything. Plus, he has had some injuries to this point, and at age 29 is still in his prime. If he’s still OPSing 1.000 six years from now, then I’ll get suspicious.

Before Cueto, Harang and Weathers shut ’em down like GM, the Cubs were averaging 5.5 runs per game and had not yet been held to fewer than two runs in game.
Cubs fans probably believe in the Reds a little bit more than many of us.

I’m physically tired of some of the roster/lineup/position debates that go on here. I just want this team to do well and play winning baseball. All the guys on the 40 man roster are major league caliber players (mostly) and should be able to get whatever job Lou gives them to do done. I don’t care who does the job….I just want it done.

but blogs generally reflect the personality of their editor. If one of the morons from Fay’s or Doc’s blogs or the message boards formerly known as “The Lot D” was running RR, it’d be bleedcubbiebleed.

there is no SB Nation style
There are several baseball blogs on SBN that are not sabermetrically focused. That’s their prerogative. JD wasn’t much of a stathead either.
BCB is what it is, and RR is what it is. Neither site is necessarily better than the other. People who read RR do so because (a) they want to talk about the Reds and (b) they like the personality of the site. The same can be said of BCB. Of course people on RR are going to think BCB sucks – we are not the audience Al is going for. Believe it or not, I’d bet the BCB crowd probably has similar opinions of RR.

Votto won't
hit at this pace forever, though I suspect strong production throughout the season. I’m glad Bruce is coming along—that alone will help ignite the RH batters, specifically Phillips and EdE, who ultimately the team needs if they want to maintain this strong start. Still, with such strong pitching, I think the Reds will be in many more games this year. And who knows: if they’re competing in July, a RH bat in left field might be acquired…but, we’ll wait and see.

2nd'd
I really think Dickerson will be ok in left. That Wrigley OF is tough, and the last time I was at a game there, (in 2002, saw old man Rijo beat the Cubs and Kearns’ first MLB homer, sweet game), I was in the LF bleacher seats and a 10 year old kid spent the entire game yelling at Dunn, “your mother doesn’t love you, Adam!” Seriously, he must’ve shouted it 300 times.
Point is, that has to be a mentally and physically tough place to play, especially for somebody who is essentially a rookie. Give him more than 10 games to judge his fielding.
by nycredsfan on Apr 24, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was at that game
That was one of those lovely April Wrigley games with worse weather than the Bears get all season long.
I realize now what a bittersweet—I was quite convinced that Dunn and Kearns would be perennial all-stars for years to come. At least I got to see my childhood pitching hero get the W.
