Spring Game 33 Thread: Pirates at Reds
And so, the end of the Reds run at Ed Smith Stadium is here. They are a combined 99-84-2 as the home team at Ed Smith, so a win today will put them at the century mark in wins with a winning pct of .543. During their 12-year run in Sarasota, the Reds have managed an 846-937 record during the regular season for a .474 winning percentage. So, Ed Smith has been kind to the Reds, to say the least.
Edinson Volquez makes his last start of the Spring. He has yet to pitch more than 5 innings in a game, so hopefully we'll see at least 6 today. On the plus side, he's only given one run in Grapefruit action, which came in his last start this past Saturday. His Grapefruit League ERA is a svelt 0.47. If there is one concern about Volquez, it's that he's surrendered 8 walks in his last 13 innings pitched. Obviously that ratio can't hold up if he's going to be successful during the season.
No word on who is pitching for the Pirates as of noon today.
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 1:05pm. The Reds are on the radio today, or you can check them out on Gameday.

Second!
I’m gonna miss these threads during the season. With me TiVo’ing all the games, I’ll rarely watch a game live.
I’ll have to make a nuisance of myself in other posts.

Petey can obviously answer for himself, but
I’m guessing it’s because the EST games start at 4:00 for him, so he’s probably still doing work, or eating dinner, etc. while the games are going on live.
i thought it was something like that
but i couldn’t remember where he lived.
well, petey, you can watch them on those west coast trips! and houston and colorado aren’t that far ahead.
Best case scenerio
is that I get home early in Los Angeles at 8:20 pm EDT, and can catch up to the live part of the game by 9:30 pm EDT, assuming I don’t eat and ignore my family.
Mostly it’s not worth the hassle. Once home. I’ll watch as much of the game on delay as my son wants to see, then put him thru his nightly routine, put him to bed around 11 pm EDT, then hang with the wife until she falls asleep around 12:20 am EDT. Then I can retire to my Tiki Lounge for the remainder of the game, which I can finish at around 1:30 am EDT.

I just imagine they are talking about Ken Griffey Jr.

An odd set of conversations today
things I’ve noticed said today:
“This offense has had trouble scoring runs this Spring.”
“This is not a team that is going to be waiting around for the 3-run home run.”
“Dusty Baker has a lot of adequate options on this roster (on offense).”
This statements seem out of sync with me.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Sorry, that second statement needs the context of they were saying it as a positive thing
but Marty and Mercker seem concerned that the Reds won’t score enough this year, but at least they won’t be waiting around for a 3-run home run. It should be okay though because they have plenty of good options, even though they won’t score any runs. And they should sign Sheffield because they need some power in the lineup so they could, what, wait around for a 3-run home run?

A lot like what they said with Dunn and BP.
They could have put Dunn at first, but they said it wouldn’t work. Dunn then goes on to play 19 games at first for the D-Backs and is going to be the starter at first for the Nats.
They could have tried moving BP to short, but they have continually insisted on keeping him at second even though moving him to short would help solidify the defense up the middle.

I wouldn't use the Nats' decision as a guideline
They don’t exactly have a great track record of talent evaluation. Besides, the only reason he’s playing first is because they have a full outfield.
