Reds complete Kepp trade
From Rob Butcher:
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced IF Drew Sutton as the player to be named later in the March 31 trade that sent IF Jeff Keppinger to the Houston Astros.
Sutton will report to Class AAA Louisville. To make room on the Reds' 40-man roster, IF Danny Richar was outrighted to Louisville.
Sutton, 25, last season was named Class AA Corpus Christi's Most Valuable Player after hitting .317 with 20 HR and 69 RBI. He was named a Texas League mid-season and post-season All-Star and led all Astros minor leaguers in batting average, hits (165), runs (102), walks (76), doubles (39) and extra-base hits (63).
Prior to this season, Sutton was named the Astros eighth-best prospect by Baseball America. In 5 games so far this season at Class AAA Round Rock he was hitting .267 with 2 RBI.
My take: This is more than I expected for Kepp. Sutton is old for a prospect, but he could be a better player than Kepp right now. He can definitely provide some nice depth down in AAA. Nice move.

Better than Keppinger, eh?
Keppinger’s gotten a hit in all five games in which he’s played this season. I look forward to seeing Sutton top that.
I don’t get sending both Richar and Sutton to Louisville, though. Will that require sending a couple of guys down to AA? Will both of them be expected to play?
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Is it true that he's a shortstop, like that COMMENTER FROM FAY'S BLOG said?
Because I for one think it’s pretty awesome to have a prospect that could actually stick at shortstop AND has a pretty good bat.
According to
this, well…
Sutton is a natural second baseman, but he did play shortstop and third base in 2008. If he continues on this torrid pace, the Astros could give him a chance to win the third base job in Spring Training. These are all big ifs, but Sutton should be on your radar from this point forward.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Hmm
Oh well. He still seems pretty good.

But this team doesn't like to move people around...
So at best he’ll just camp out in AAA until we trade BP.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Yeah, that got me thinking
I checked out his stats at BB-Ref and he certainly looks a lot more like a second baseman. So, that makes him about the 10th guy in the system that can handle second, while no one besides Janish is a legit shortstop. With Gonzalez mired in a pretty bad slump (and also not signed beyond this year), what’s it going to take to at least experiment with moving Phillips over? He’s got the range, I’m pretty sure he’s got the arm, and he’s definitely got the bat. With so many prospects in the pipeline for second base, it just makes sense, dammit!

He has no range.

He is a switch-hitter
which I like. He had 76 walks and 98 Ks, so the plate discipline is pretty decent. Baseball America says "he isn’t a true shortstop, though he has enough arm for the position and could fill in there. Primarily a 2B, but has also played SS, 3B and CF.
Anyway, he’s still a far better return than I expected for Kepp.
You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris
definitely
I’m interested to see where he fits with the Reds. Kinda looks a lot like a switch hitting Rosales at first glance, though Rosales gets credit for playing in AAA last year.

On my Google search of "Drew Sutton"
I found a FanShot from the Crawfish Boxes site from the day Kepp was traded. Sutton was rumored to be the return and everyone there was gnashing their teeth saying that if he was the player Cincinnati got, the trade would automatically be a loss for the Astros. One poster even said something like, “If this is true, I quit.” Some overreaction? Possibly, but it’s making me like this deal more and more. Awesome job by Walt to hold a team that really needed a 3B over the barrel until he got a nice piece in return.

Crawfish Boxer, here
Here’s a profile on what you just got from us.
All in all, I’d say your GM did a good job of exploiting the fact that our back was against the wall when it comes to 3B. I’ve been rooting for Sutton, and I hope he does well for you guys (except when you play the ’Stros, of course).
Guess we’ll see you guys at Minute Maid Park soon. Feel free to come on over and comment on our game log.

Rotoworld likes the deal for the Reds
Here’s their comment:
Brutal. Keppinger was of use to the Astros, but it certainly wasn’t worth giving up one of the organization’s better prospects for him. Every move Houston GM Ed Wade makes seem to be focused on short term and the short term only. Sutton was outstanding in Double-A last year and even better in the AFL, hitting .315/.425/.611 with seven homers in 108 at-bats. He doesn’t have great range at second, but if last year was no fluke, he has a chance of making it as a regular third baseman.
You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris
interesting
So maybe it’s EE who’ll be moving, not BP.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Sutton is hardly the best 3B prospect in the system
he’s probably not even in the top 3

I'd have no problem with that
Except where do you move him? Left field? That reserved for Votto and if I have to choose two out of three with the three being EdE (hi Ash!), Votto, & Yonder, Edwin’s hitting the road.
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....

"Screw it. We've got bigger problems than a butter shortage."
Yonder has not shown me shit and he bats with the wrong hand
i gotta roll with my boy E; especially if it’s destructor at 3rd and edwin goes to left. You just cannot have Nino 3b, Votto LF, Bruce RF and Yonder 1B. That is too left handed.

Why is that too left handed?
Hypothetically, we’d still have BP, plus (presumably right handed) guys at SS, CF, and catcher.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Because there are left handed pitchers that the best left handed hitters cannot even sniff

and the same cannot be said for right handers. I may be off base here, but that is just this inkling I have. There is really no such thing as a “right-handed specialist”. Ask a manager if he wants his four corner dudes to be all lefties. It just ain’t natural, man.

i dont think you have to worry
Francisco is a long way from the major leagues. his plate approach is still incredibly raw. i could see him spending a full year in AA this year and a full year in AAA next year. he can smash low-minors pitching, but i think he’s gonna struggle a bit against higher-level stuff. i like him as a prospect, but i wouldnt count on him to contribute for a while.
on the other hand, Frazier (a big righty) looks to be all but ready right now. i would not be surprised to see him in Cincy this season. he’s the horse to bet on for 3B.
and honestly, all of these guys are still big question marks. so projecting a lineup even as far into the future as August is more alchemy than science.

Amen
If anybody has to move anywhere in the foreseeable future, it’s Encarnacion to the OF to make room for another hitter. The willingness to give up on 25 year olds in favor of 23 year olds is the downside of a more sabermetric, economic focus on the game. Encarnacion is a player with some upside who can contirbute this year and next. Let’s not trade him in favor of the “flavor of the month…from the bus leagues.” (h/t Crash Davis)
Alonso is still a year plus for the majors and Francisco is a LLOONNNGG way from being ready (barring injuries and setbacks)
works for me
he probably wont ever amount to much more than what kepp is worth right now, but who knows. he could be part of a nice package for an impact bat or a young arm for the pen
If he can play third and is so desirable
why didn’t the Astros just put him at third instead of trading for Kepp?
Reds fan for 40 years!
He's still a project
He’s never played above AA, and most of the time there he played as a second baseman, not third. He also didn’t start significantly raking til last season. It would be a really big stretch to plunk him down at third base in the majors right now.
by Brendanukkah on Apr 16, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
Even though he’s a project (and likely never will be a stud in the majors), he’s still one of the best prospects the Astros have and possibly their best hitter. Granted, the ‘Stros cupboard is pretty much bare, but it’s always nice to take one of the best farmhands from your divisional rival.

My amusement here is unrelated to the politics involved, but...
it’s pretty funny that the recount in NY-20 was halted because one of the party officials took the day off to go see the Yankees get killed by the Indians.
Daniel French, a [party 1] official with the Dutchess County Board of Elections, said that they couldn’t complete the recount because [party 2] elections Commissioner David Gamache was attending a Yankees game this afternoon with John Ciampoli, an attorney for state [party 2] chair Joe Mondello.
