Real Sports report on Robby Tolan
I had not heard this story until today when I saw Bryant Gumbel's report on the shooting by the police of Robby Tolan so if this has been discussed previously I apoligize. Robby is the 23 year old son of former Red Bobby Tolan and was shot by the Bellaire Texas Police Department in his own driveway. It certainly sounds, from the initial reports, that the police officer involved made a series of mistakes ending with the shooting. If you get a chance watch the report do so, or read this link, or this one, and come to your own conclusions. The final investigation of this shooting has not been released yet but is expected in the next few weeks.
My initial response is I am appalled at the treatment of this young man by this police department, the city of which they live, and pay taxes in.

agreed
I remember when this story broke and I was appalled. I hope the police department is held accountable.

It was discussed here
Back in January.
It happened in Bellaire, TX – Bubba Crosby’s home town. Someone posted on my blog that the shooting was about 2 miles from Bubba’s house.

I just had no memory of it. My wife and I caught a Real Sports when we got home from church. Disturbing stuff to be sure.

Why can't we take the guns away from these mother fuckers
I can’t describe how sickened I feel by this story. Paid leave for attempted murder. Fuck you.

Police
I know there are a lot of good cops out there, but apparently they’ll give a badge and a gun to just about anybody these days. Graduating from a police academy is way easier than getting a college diploma . . . which they also give to anybody just for showing up. It’s really a shame.

Its an unfortunate system that I think breeds abuse
I understand the need for police, but I think people who would want that sort of power over others are sick.

um, yick.
I was a Criminology major for two whole years, and folks like this are why I hightailed it out of those classes, even though its one of the most solid paychecks going forward as long as your competent (and, apparently in this case, not-so-competent).
Thoughts and prayers are with the Tolans. This just sucks.

That's racist.
And tells a lot about the intersection between race and class in the US, and who’s race and class interests the boys in blue are “serving” and “protecting.”
Robby Tolan was in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time. Ironically, that place was his own driveway.
Tanzen!
