Spring Game 11 Thread: Blue Jays at Reds
It's deja vu all over again, but this time from Sarasota. The Reds take on the Blue Jays for the second day in a row, hopefully avenging their 7-2 loss from Saturday. Micah Owings makes his third start of the Spring. So far he's looked good, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing on 5 hits and one walk while striking out 6. Bailey and Masset have pitched well in their last two starts. Hopefully Owings can continue to match them.
Owings will be facing off against David Purcey. He's a big, 26-year old left-hander, who had a cup of coffee last year with mixed results. He pitched pretty well in Triple-A, but had been less impressive the previous two years, likely due to an injury.
What's up with Encarnacion? He hasn't played for four days and I can't find any news on him. Anyone?
Game time is 1:05pm. The Reds are on 700WLW today, so potentially you can receive them at other outlets as well. If you don't have them on air, jump onto Gameday or just follow along right here in this very thread.

I'm afraid that statement will be repeated many times this season
my sunday is fantastic. the furnace is turned off and Chez OBC’s windows are open.
"Hey! Look at the kid in the sombrero!"
Lettin' the smell of Dusty's burnt butter lineup blow away?
(Actually, I think 2-5 can put something together for us.)
This Purcey kid might be the biggest highest-drafted left-hander that you’ve never heard of but he can wing it a little bit.
I’m posting this pic just because those Jesse Barfield-era unis used to be among my favorites as a pup.

Agreed.
(Even though I pooh-poohed Hal for pooh-pooh Cueto in another thread, I’m not looking forward to some of the five-inning stinkers Johnny will give us this season.)
I’m just so happy about having young pitchers competing for the spots in the back of the rotation. And I’m just so happy that those young pitchers (Masset included) are meeting and exceeding expectations.
And couple that with the worldwide badass performance of our favorite Canuck and this is the best I’ve felt about our boys since they climbed to within ten games of .500 under Pete Mackinin.

one more thing…is it just me, or does anyone feel that we would be more well suited if Kepp started at SS instead of Gonzo? Kepp can flat out rake and his D is not going to hurt us too much….he makes the routine plays
right now I think Kepp is #1
Gonzo has yet to prove he can get back, let alone stay, on the field
90 wins in 09!!
Thats what I figured
its just most things i have seen is that its Gonzo’s to lose….i was never that impressed with him tobegin with…always thought he got way to much money. I think i remember seeing someone on MLB TV say that he was this amazing defender…and he had alot of pop in his bat….does my memory fail me? i really dont remember this at all
They did say both of those things
His defense is getting by on reputation now, but his bat was decent in 2007. He hit 16 home runs in 110 games. He can occasionally get to 20 HR, which would be nice to get out of the SS position.
It depends
If Keppinger’s knee has healed and he can move, then I might be okay with it. I just remember him looking like a statue out there last year and being enraged by his lack of range. If he can’t move, then his defense does hurt us that much.
I’m not sold on Gonzalez either, but I’m willing to give him the entire spring to demonstrate that he deserves the spot.
I think Kepp
has healed faster than Gonzo. And I really wouldn’t mind seeing one of the youngsters make the squad
90 wins in 09!!
I don't want Kepp at SS
He doesn’t have the range for it. He was worse after the knee injury, but he wasn’t good even before it. Keppinger is not a SS.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
word.
I’d rather have Jerry at SS until he proves ‘08 was a fluke. I’m in the “please let Gonzo prove his averageness” camp, because that sure beats a Jerry/Jeff/Rosales/Janish/Valaika shitshow

Basically
Dusty’s stated that he wants to cause havoc on the basepaths, which means that we should be looking forward to a lot of stolen base attempts. This was especially sparked by the acquisition of Willy Taveras and his 68 stolen bases last year, so if someone’s referring to a specific person as HAVOC, it’s Willy. Havoc as a concept just means running wild on the basepaths. Too bad we’re not actually very good at stealing bases. You’ve seen how often we’ve made out on the basepaths in the spring? Yeah, that’s going to continue all year.
ok...HAVOC it is!
thanks for getting me up to date….thats pretty much what i figured…..i love the idea of attempting more stolen bases….even though i am not sure how many guys should be trying it….
Taveras (I mean, that's what we got him for) and Phillips and that's about it
Maybe Dickerson. I just thank god Ryan Freel’s not on the team anymore. He and Patterson would get thrown out like clockwork. Most studies show that stealing bases is really only beneficial if you can do it at a 75% success rate or higher. And, uh, we’re not that good as a team.

The Jack Corbett Guide to West Virginia topless clubs uses a unique five star rating system to evaluate West Virginia strip clubs to save you valuable time so that you can find the clubs that serve your needs best.
Here’s the way it works. If I think a club averages 15 or more dancers per shift, this club gets a star as I believe the best clubs will be able to attract and to keep a large enough number of girls to provide variety to its customers.

OFF THE SUBJECT
so my girlfriend just said something to me when i told her i was on this site talking about the reds….she asked me in a shitty tone that if since i had all these answers to the Reds….what would I do if i was GM, like what would be the first thing i would do…..so what about you all?
The first thing I would do..
…is buy flowers and chocolates for all Reds fans’ girlfriends.

Seriously though...
You could throw this question in your very own FanPost and get a wide variety of answers to consider. Right now is a very interesting time for the Reds and Reds fans. Everything seems to be on the upswing but there is still a lot to be done to ensure that the Reds are gonna be able to chase down the Cubs and/or Brewers in 2010 and/or 2011.
It might pain a lot of Red Reporters to say it but a short and simple answer could be, “Keep doing what Walt is doing.”

You should go read
the Red Reporter wiki. It will bring you up to speed on many things that will make you informed enough to appear to be a Red Reporter regular in no time!
Thanks for the PBP today.

Not that its a big deal...
but I did the PBP … I didn’t see you here, no one else jumped and I had a free afternoon for once. :)
Typically I lurk, unless there’s an afternoon game… then I’ll throw out something here or there.
Glad to see more locals around here though. WV has a rep to restore. (or establish for those who think we never had one)

Can someone score me some tickets? :)
I meant to reply to you. Oops.
And thanks.

I didn’t get to pay much attention to the game today, so it was nice to have a recap in the thread. I love it when people step up to do that stuff!
Thanks!

Perhaps a a flatbed truck loaded with cadavers will explode in front of a Star Trek convention. One can only dream and hope.
