Keppinger flat out traded to the Astros for PTBNL
Fay tweets us with the news. I guess this means that Rosales has made the team. Weird that they would make this deal though with Gonzalez being gimpy. Then again, I suppose Janish could be the man at SS. I'm all confused now.
UPDATE: Reds also re-assigned Pedro Viola to minor league camp and option Josh Roenicke to Louisville. Roster stands at 30.

Okay, fine, I'll say it again.
Does this mean we’ll get to see more Hairston errors at short when Gonzalez is out?

probably
unless Janish makes the team and gets the starts. But, I’d guess it’s Cherry Hudson Jr. time!

I think they might be tossing that possibility around
He’s been hitting so far this spring, but surely Walt wouldn’t give a guy a major league roster spot after exactly one spring of being anything other than a crappy hitter, right?

well
if you are adamant about strong defense up the middle, you may be willing to sacrifice offense there. The problem is that Gonzalez gave the best balance, even though his offense is weak, it’s still better than Janish and his defense is definitely better than Hairston.

How many errors does he have in ST?
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Hairston has 3 at SS in Reds camp in 41 innings
Kepp had 3 at SS in 45 innings
Janish has 1 at SS in 77 innings
Gonzalez has 0 at SS in 37 innings
Rosales has 0 at SS in 7 innings

I reiterate:
Rosales looked strong at the plate (Uh Oh say all sabrmetricians in unison) he drove in some runs, made good contact and was patient at the plate. He has a bit of pop and was stinging the ball when we were down in Sarasota. I hope this opens a slot for him to get some more MLB experience.
Kepp was going nowhere with the Reds and this spring sealed the deal.
Jannish on the other hand certainly can field and certainly can’t hit.

The way his bat’s looked this spring, he probably belongs up there. And he’s at the very least, better than Kepp (and probably Hairston) defensively.

I’ve seen a couple of those guys play at Lexington. Leandro Cespedes looked good when I saw him pitch. A very live arm. And Collin DeLome hit the cover off the ball. Well, we don't have to worry about opening up a roster spot for Gomes now
"I can eat mayonnaise with a spoon." - Jeff Brantley
I like this move
Keppinger was tradeable, and I for one think this actually is selling high on him. He’s shown that he can play for more than one season, so his production is decently known. The temptation was there to give him more playing time when he’s best suited coming off the bench. We needed to open a roster spot for Gomes, and Keppinger and Masset were the two players we were trying hardest to move. I’d gladly give up the utility infielder (especially given what we have in camp and what’s coming up through the system) over the relief pitcher, humdrum though he may be. Plus the Astros really needed a third baseman. Hopefully Walt put them over the barrel and maximized his gain as best he could. I’d love to get something useful from this.
feel bad for kep
Before he cracked his knee cap he was a very valuable player for the Reds.
But either he is still not right physically or has lost all his confidence.
Could be a good move for Keppinger
He’ll get another shot at playing everyday and even thoght he’s NOT an everyday guy (IMO) I’m betting that Jeff thinks he can and should be in there everyday…so good luck to him and good luck to Rosy.
Its good to have at least one Adam on the team at all times.

His numbers were in line with his minor league equivalancy.
After the injury he lost all ability to drive the ball and it appears that has continued in Spring.
It would be interesting if bat speed numbers were recorded but I would guess Kep’s bat speed was much slower after the injury.

Coming off the sidelines
Hi everyone,
My name is Tony and I’ve been lurking for a couple years as a huge reds fan (also Cornell grad student, so I get to root for two reds), and I thought I should enter the forum with opening day coming up. I’m very excited for the season, and hopefully being on RR will make it more fun.
I also like how in the article about Kepp being traded, MLB.com thinks that Walt Jocketty is still the Cardinal’s GM.
“Houston pursued the deal,” Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty said. “They needed an infielder who hit right-handed. It’s a better situation for him.”
Wonder if he has any other jobs we don’t know about….

Joaquin Arias
TR Sullivan, a Ranger beat writer, is reporting the Reds are interested in Ranger IF Joaquin Arias. Arias has had an excellent spring and would be the Rangers utility IF if not for them wanting to keep Omar Vizquel to mentor Andrus. The Rangers would be looking for a RP. Probably someone not on the 40 man roster.

Interesting that the Reds would want to replace Keppinger from outside the system, as it’s been generally assumed that Kepp being traded would mean Rosales or Janish makes the team. And yeah, I’m thinking Masset is perfect for this deal as well. Or Bray, perhaps?

we have valaika and frazier to move up, too
i’m assuming valaika is starting at louisville this season? am i wrong? isn’t frazier starting at Chattanooga Carolina? they haven’t moved him to third yet, have they?
yes on where both will be playing
Frazier will not be playing 3rd though, at least not regularly. El Nino Destructor will be playing 3rd for Carolina so that he can have easy access to children in the front row. Roar.
As far as I can tell, Fraizer will either being playing SS or OF in Carolina. That roster is stacked.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
maybe
the problem is that none of these guys project to be regular shortstops in the big leagues. Offensively they could be pretty good, but defensively they are questionable. I have a feeling that Jocketty won’t stick with them there if they can’t handle it defensively, and he probably shouldn’t.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
it may be safe to assume that this is edwin's last year
but there still aren’t enough spots to put them all. frazier’s going to be ready for big league ball next year, so’s valaika, and probably alonso, too. only way there’s room for them all is to put one at short or move bp there, which they don’t seem willing to do.
The 3B situation is interesting.
If EdE sputters along again this season while Bruce, Votto and the pitching staff continue to develop, Jocketty surely cannot keep him. And if we are to believe that the Reds are positioning themselves for a run at 90+ wins in 2010, then surely Jocketty won’t replace EdE with an even younger slugger at third.
But if EdE starts hitting, it will be great to have him and keep him next year but he’d be playing out his contract on a division winner and of course that would be fantastic but then Jocketty would not be able to get anything for him other than compensatory draft picks (maybe?).
And then… Let’s say the 2010 Reds win or lose the NLCS and/or win or lose the World Series. How do you not bring Edwin back for 2011?
"What wrath, Daddy?"
by Fat Vegas Alan on Apr 1, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions
EdE still has a year's arb eligibility left after his contract is up
so no picks are to be had, since he wont be a FA.
we also have to remember that El Nino Destructor may be ready for the Bigs soon as well. so that’s Frazier, EdE, END (even his acronym is forbidding!), Votto, and Alonso for 3 spots. it’ll be real interesting to see how it all shakes out.
My millions are unconventional!
by Charlie Scrabbles on Apr 1, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions
right
and after that there’s soto. we’re loaded at 3B for years. that’s why i think edwin will be gone sooner rather than later. not that i want that to happen. and i also think valaika or frazier remains at short, because how can you have valaika, frazier, alonso, and francisco in the same lineup and not have one of them at short? there’s already not enough room for them. it’s a very fun problem to think about.
But here's my point..
If the Reds are building to win in 2010/2011, I think that the third baseman is going to be either the late-blooming Edwin Encarnacion or someone Adrian Beltre-ish.
"What wrath, Daddy?"

Frazier has never played above Single-A and has 14 career games at 3B. I’m not saying that your not right, but I think if anybody is considered the 3B of the future right now, it is Francisco, who has also never played above Single-A.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
True, I guess I could have selected Frazier or Francisco
I’m just saying that perhaps Walt thinks one of the young guys is close enough for next year that they would be ready in less than a full season, if EdE were to be traded

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Viola is probably fair value
but i still cant see why the Reds would go for someone like Arias with Janish, Rosales, and Hairston in house.
My millions are unconventional!
by Charlie Scrabbles on Apr 1, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Arias is probably better than
Janish and Rosales with the bat and the glove. The only problem with Arias is his arm strength. Additionally, Arias is only 23 and controllable for 4 more years. Do you think Hairston is going to repeat last year’s numbers?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
i dont know about that
career minor league batting line:
Arias – .293/.319/.401
Rosales – .288/.340/.465
Janish – .252/.324/.387
Arias looks to be every bit as weak with the stick as Janish is, and isnt even close to Rosales. i dont know of Arias’ defensive reputation, but Janish is a certifiable whiz at SS. Rosales is below average for a SS, but he appears to be very solid at 3B and 2B. and he would probably be a pretty good SS overall if his bat is close to his minor league numbers. as for Hairston, ive been skeptical of him from day one. i dont think there is any way he replicates his performance from last year, and i think he’s more than likely going to be a complete waste of $2 mil.
but regardless of Hairston, there is no way i would take Arias over either of Janish or Rosales. especially if it means we have to give something up for him.
My millions are unconventional!
by Charlie Scrabbles on Apr 1, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions
What is the mood thier in Cinci?
Do they feel they have a chance to win the NL Central? I agree with you on Rosales. His stick is better than Arias, but, Arias has shown he can hit in the MLs. (I know, small sample size.) Do you think they are interested in Arias in case Hairston realizes that he is … Jerry Hairston Jr?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
I honestly think any interest in Arias is to help fill up the minors
not that he would never make it to the Majors with the Reds, but they traded their would be AAA 2B in Justin Turner for Ramon Hernandez and if both Rosales and Janish make the team (a possibility with Alex Gonzalez still ailing), then they are going to be thin up the middle in Louisville. They may be interested in Arias as a long-term possibility, but I’d imagine the immediate need they are shopping for in this case is Louisville.
As for the mood, sure they think there is a shot to win – veterans like Jocketty and Baker always think there is a shot – but I doubt they think 2009 is really the year it will all come together. Jocketty was very conservative over the off-season, which leads me to believe that he wants to let the youngsters marinate for a year before really making a push to fill major holes.

I'm flat out disappointed
that Jocko is taking away all my favorite white scrappy players
from Richard Justice:
Anyway, Wade’s acquisition of Jeff Keppinger seems to make a lot of sense. It’s not a great deal and it’s not a terrible deal. I’m not completely comfortable trading another young guy, but as long as Uncle Drayton is in charge, the goal will be to win this year and worry about next year later on.
I mention young guy because the Astros originally said Drew Sutton was sent to Cincinnati in the deal. Then they said it would be a player to be named later or cash. So who knows?
if the PTBNL is indeed Drew Sutton, this deal would be very good for the Reds. the Astros have no depth on the farm and Sutton, though not a true hot-to-trot top prospect, is one of the best guys they have. he’s a 2B who John Sickels sees as “a useful role player due to broad secondary skills.” i dont really know much about him, but maybe one of our resident Minor League gurus could lend a hand?

I am far from a minor league guru
But here was what Kevin Goldstein said about Sutton before spring training:
8. Drew Sutton, 2B
The Good: Sutton has many ways to beat you offensively. He has a good approach, sound hitting skills, and showed much-improved power in 2008. He’s a solid defensive second baseman, and an average runner with excellent instincts on the basepaths.
The Bad: Sutton played three infield positions during the regular season, but he fits best at second; he lacks the range or arm for the left side. At 25 years old, he was a bit elderly for his level, and he has no projection left.
Perfect World Projection: He’ll be a solid starting second baseman.
Glass Half Empty: His age bothers a lot of people, and he may be more of a minor league performer—basically the next Brooks Conrad.
here are Sutton's stats
last year he killed the ball, hitting .319/.409/.524 in 521 ABs. of course, he was a 25-year-old repeating AA, so that isnt exactly sparkling. his minor-league career line looks like this: .282/.378/.456. he’s a switch hitter, and he handles righties better than lefties, with a 100-point difference in OPS between the two. he seems to have pretty good plate discipline, as he doesnt strike out much and walks at a pretty strong rate. his career K/BB is 353/267, which is pretty damn good for a guy with a decent amount of pop.
but of course, he is 25. i would say his likely major-league career would look a good bit like Jeff Keppinger’s. if he is in fact the PTBNL, this looks like a pretty good deal. getting anything for Keppinger, let alone someone of Sutton’s quality (as limited as that is) is a win.

I agree
Anything for Keppinger after his miserable spring training is a win. Here’s a comment off of Sickel’s blog.
To a poster that said Sutton should have been downgraded for his D, Sickels replied
sutton
I’ve seen him…I dind’t think his glove was tHAT bad…not good, but not horrid.
Not like a ringing endorsement, but if he can hit just a little bit he’s a useful guy to have in the system.

Here's what our friends have to say about Drew Sutton
over at Rotowire: (subscription)
2009 Fantasy Baseball Outlook
Sutton had a big year with Double-A Corpus Christi, hitting .317/.408/.523 with 20 homers, 39 doubles, 69 RBI and 20 steals (27 chances) in 520 at-bats. He’ll turn 26 in June, so the fact that he’s never been above Double-A limits his upside. Last year’s success could allow him to compete for a job with the big league team in spring training, but more likely he’ll end up starting the year at Triple-A Round Rock.
2/12/09:
The 26-year-old will get a long look for a utility gig with the Astros during spring training, following an impressive run in the Arizona Fall League where he hit .315 with seven homers and 24 RBI.
He was an All-Star with Double-A Corpus Christi.
Considered an organization player by most scouts, Sutton is old for a prospect but does a lot of things right, drawing walks and showing some pop. He could be a useful bench player, and given the thin nature of the Houston farm system he could get a chance sooner than people anticipate.
He is on the 40-man roster, FWIW.
