Spring Game 31 Thread: Yankees at Reds
It's the second-to-last game at tired old Ed Smith Stadium. Try to keep from getting too misty.
Today we'll see Micah Owings take on Joba Chamberlain. Owings had 5 walks in his last start, but managed to only give up just one run in his 4 innings pitched. The big issue for Owings right now might be that he has yet to finish 5 full innings this Spring, the only one of the remaining 6 starters not to have done so. Barring anything catastrophic, he's probably made the team as the 5th starter and this is likely his last start of the Spring.
The Reds last faced Chamberlain back on March 10th, when they managed to get 3 hits off of him and score 1 run over 3 innings. With the way the offense has been struggling this past week, don't be surprised if we see much of the same today.
The good news for the Reds is that Edwin Encarnacion is back in the lineup. He was the DH in a minor league game yesterday where he went 3 for 6. The fact that he's playing today means the Reds feel he is likely healthy enough to play on Opening Day, otherwise he'd be playing the minors to allow them to back date his eligibility if he goes on the DL. They'll continue to play Alex Gonzalez in the minor league games for that very reason.
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 1:05pm. The Reds are on the radio today, or you can check them out on Gameday.

They must still be worried about EdE's health
The lineup has Dickerson cheating in from his LF position to be a second thirdbaseman.

Looking at that Yankee lineup
This’ll be a pretty decent test of Owings.
It’s good to see EdE back. He’d be way harder to replace offensively on Opening Day than AGon.
This is as close to an Opening Day lineup as we've seen so far, I think

2008 was ugly with injuries
But his 2007 line (.265/.372/.462 OPS+ 120) is most likely a better line than any of our OF’s can do this year. Bruce could come close, but no way he could touch Sheff’s OBP and ability to take more walks than strikeouts. So if he is healthy and could come close to hitting that, it would be a good move. I’m not sure how it hurts you defensively, but one would think he would be better in left than Dunn the last several years.
Also, how much would having a guy like Sheffield hitting between Votto and Bruce help in their continued development? You couldn’t really ask that question last year because Dusty always had them split up in the lineup. Obviously Votto would get pitched differently. How many RH pitchers this year will pitch around Votto to get Brandon Phillips to pop out on the first pitch?
Find me on MySpace- http://www.myspace.com/mixfmkyle
i dont know
the last time Sheff played in the outfield on a regular basis was ‘05 when he posted a -26.8 UZR in RF for the Yanks. Dunn’s averaged around in the LF the past 4 years (when he turned from a tad below average to awful).
so Sheff hasnt played the field in 3 full seasons, and the last time he did he was worse than Dunn has ever been. and if Sheff puts up a line like he did in ‘07 as you suggest, he’d be a notch below Dunn’s production there too. this piece at BtB says his projection for this season has him at a shade over replacement level.
i’ll take GomerDick every day of the week.

Taveras/Dickerson
Phillips
Votto
Sheffield
Bruce
Encarnacion

Shortstop Of The Day
Pitcher
Find me on MySpace- http://www.myspace.com/mixfmkyle
Perhaps,
But it would kill our OF defense, and there’s no way they platoon Taveras after giving him 6 million dollars.
But does it make our franchise better?
Unless you can argue that his offensive differential over whom he would replace would catapult the Reds into contention, then perhaps we are better developing players in a growth year.

wouldnt you have to back out the bunt attempts/hits to get a true representation of the swinging gb/fb ratio?
"I've actually never had a drink before, tonight I might try it out. We'll see."

why?
do bunts not count as ground balls? their point is that he doesn’t put the ball on the ground enough, not that he doesn’t swing the ball on the ground enough.
FWIW, his non-bunt GB/FB is still 1.23

I guess what bothers me is that Taveras already puts the ball on the ground half the time he puts it in play
and he already has zero power. Asking him to put it on the ground more will likely lower his power AND increase his outs. They essentially want a one trick pony to turn into a half-trick pony. Why?

They built Quincy Plaza while I was living there
I lived on Quincy St., just about a block from that place. The Randolph Towers are also right there, just across the street. They’re really close to the Ballston Mall, which has some “trendy nightspots” around it. The Washington Capitals have their practice facility at the ice rink there, and a lot of the players live in the area, as do some DC United players. It’s pretty much equidistant between the Ballston and Virginia Square Metro stops.
The Courtland buildings are in Clarendon, which has a lot more in the way of restaurants and bars. They’re a little bit closer to DC, not too far from Georgetown. I might recommend these, but both are good. If you happen to be an Ohio State fan, there are Ohio State alumni bars in Clarendon and Georgetown.

virginia is yuppy-land with all the chain stores you could ever want. you can rent a nice row house in shaw-u street for about $1500 a month if you’re budget conscious which is near everything. there are also decently priced apts on connecticut avenue up the red line. i’ll be around that area, i think.
Shaw is nice
It has a bad rap, but it’s been getting a gentrification makeover. You can find good value, and the neighborhood is much safer than it’s reported to be. I typically park in Shaw every day, and never had any sort of problem with break-ins or anything.

i lived there for two years and loved it
i had to move because i couldn’t find a roommate once the other moved out. i had a small backyard and grew my own spinach and lettuce and had a wonderful garden and grilled out every night in the summer. the neighbors were amazing – i lived next to the tuba player in the national symphony orchestra.
for a lot of people, the fact that white is a minority makes it a “bad neighborhood.” my friends who lived in yuppyland used to say i was in the ghetto when they came over, which was ridiculous. it took me 20 minutes to walk downtown to work. i’d live there again in a second if i found a roommate – can’t swing that rent on my own just yet.

Owens has done that well?
When I saw him he only gave up 1 earned run in like 5 innings but he was getting hit pretty hard and he threw a lot of pitches.

That's the danger of trusting your eyes in one game to make a judgement
I saw Josh Hamilton make this ridiculously amazing throw one time and thought, “This kid is gonna be somebody!” Oh, how wrong I was.

fun stat/ bottom 3 OBP with 40 or more ABs in Spring.
Keppinger .155
Jones .149
Patterson .125
We could still have all 3.
Another fun fact
Out of all players with 20 or more AB’s this spring, guess how many of the bottom 8 players in OPS are either Reds or Patterson.
C’mon, guess.
Close
N. Hopper CIN .335
M. Ordonez DET .304
C. Patterson WAS .300
J. Keppinger CIN .296
D. Richar CIN .292
J. Jones CIN ..263
W. Valdez CLE .249
L. Marson PHI .224
4 Reds plus our favorite former Red.
I didn’t realize Richar was so terrible this ST.
At what point does this kind of shit stop being a coincidence?

At least they're all off the roster now
(Not actually certain that Richar is, but if he starts the season on the team, I’ll eat my hat).

the defense sounds atrocious this inning
EdE gets beat on a bunt, though no error.
BP throws one away for an error.
Masset falls down trying to make a play with an error

The shortstop threw someone out at home?

why would they say that?
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
taveras, hernandez, return of gonzalez, getting rid of griffey and dunn
it was in an article last week – reds were tied with deadbirds for best, and they said reds had best bullpen in the division, too.
I still ask
why would they say that? The only real improvement is on the outfield corners and shortstop if Gonzalez is ever actually healthy. I don’t see how that takes them from last in the NL last year to best in the Central. I think people are overestimating how good this defense will be. It will be improved, but BP remains the only real threat for a gold glove.

bad news about browning - i hadn't heard
didn’t know he was a deadbeat. that’s a real bummer. http://redlegnation.com/2009/03/31/browning-jailed/#comments
He's not necessarily a deadbeat.
He got arrested, not convicted. And until he is convicted and misses time from his coaching job in a way that might hurt the team, it’s not news, and it’s none of our business, IMO.

deadbeat fathers are the scum of the earth
deadbeats are a societal problem and very much our business.
why should browning be any different than anyone else? you go to jail, you lose your job. that’s the way it works in this country which houses one fourth of the entire world’s prison population.
Unless they're your kids, I'm pretty sure it's not your business
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....
I'm blessed, but that ain't the reason
In my lifetime I have had three fathers, three mothers, and a six total names.
As with our finding out that Homer is an avid reader shows, we don’t really know these guys. I can’t even tell you how many kids Tom Browning has or what their names are so I’m not willing to pass judgment just yet. If this is true, there’s absolutely no excuse for him not supporting his children and I’d be the first to condemn him for it. The problem is it’s incredibly easy in this country to drag someone into court under false pretenses.
As far as deadbeats go, you’re right. It is a problem for both men and women. In a perfect world it would be both parents’ responsibility to take care of their children but the US legal system doesn’t see it that way.
That said, this probably isn’t the place for this discussion. I’d be happy to engage you in email and regale you with even more stories if you’d like.

Deadbeat dads might be the scum of the earth, but he has not been convicted of this crime.
Someone could tell enough lies to get you dragged into court on a completely bogus charge of rape. That would not make you a rapist. And it certainly would not be any of our business, unless you are convicted. Even then, not really the business of total strangers who don’t live in your area.
And it certainly shouldn’t be on the front page of ESPN.com.

realize this team isn’t built on Speed & Defense. Spring training or not, this is looking like little league ball.

Let's remain (somewhat) calm
The mighty Yanks made 3 errors, themselves. This is probably a combination of weather conditions (wind, glare) and end of camp boredom.
Is it a league leading defense? No— but it’s not as bad as the numbers today might suggest. One of the errors is on a pitcher. Bruce’s error is on a ball that he called for, then was so windblown that he was forced to attempt a basket catch on the infield dirt.
If you want to panic, look at the offensive OBP and offensively high strikeout totals of our offense across the entire camp, not today’s error total.

AP story on this game
mentions Dusty’s ejection.
Reds manager Dusty Baker was ejected by plate umpire D.J. Reyburn following a heated argument in the sixth inning. It was an unusual outburst by Baker, who was ejected only once last season.
The blowup came after someone in the Reds dugout yelled something at Reyburn, who turned and said something back. Baker, who was seated next to the dugout on a folding chair, got into an animated exchange with the umpire and was ejected.
Instead of leaving the field immediately — Baker would have had to walk along the right-field foul line and leave through a gate — he told crew chief Charlie Reliford that he was going to watch the rest of the inning from the dugout.
“I said, ‘Hey, man, I ain’t leaving right now because I ain’t walking down there,” Baker said. “It’s a long walk. I wasn’t going to hold up the game. I told Charlie I’ll leave after the inning.”
Fay says the person who yelled from the dugout was Chris Dickerson, asking where a pitch was.
And I don’t think Dusty’s leaving immediately would have held up the game. They continue playing while the players are walking down the line and leaving through the bullpen.
