Fay tweets us with this news this morning:
Hopper, Thompson optioned to Louisville, Jacque Jones re-assigned to minor league camp.

So, finally Jones is gone. Still 8 more cuts to come, by my count.

So why wasn't he optioned to Louisville?

Do they think that more work in minor league camp will help him stop sucking?

We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.

Mark Sheldon says he hopes that the same thing that happened to Hairston will happen to Jones

Hairston was reassigned last season and began the season in Louisville. Then he came up and had the best season of his career. So Dusty has his rose-colored glasses on and is hoping that happens again. Jones is looking to possibly catch on with another team (ha!).

We have enough maybes

so let’s skip the probably nots (Jones).

by Matt McWax on Mar 30, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

So now

instead of worrying about him taking a roster spot, we can worry about him taking ABs from guys like Dorn and Stubbs…..great

It’s still a relief that he’s not going north.

by nycredsfan on Mar 30, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I take this outcome and run.

So much better than actually having him on the major league roster for Dusty to abuse. There’s always the chance that Jobs winds up surfacing at the major league level again, but he will actually have to outperform Dorn, Stubbs and Hopper in AAA in order to do that.

Having Jock Jobs around Dusty is like putting a bag of potato chips within reach of a binge eater.

with Jacque Jams in AAA, i would bet Dorn stays in AA to start the year. fucking incredible.

it would be ineffibly sad if Jock Jams took Louisville PAs away from Dorn, to put a melodramatic spin on it.

a player has to be on the major league roster to be optioned to the minors

Jones was a spring training invite, so he is not on the 40 man roster, thus he is just reassigned rather than optioned, with that he has the right to refuse it.

by justin007000 on Mar 30, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Does he have the right to refuse?

He’d have the right to refuse if he was on the big league roster, but he signed a minor league contract. I don’t he has the right to refuse assignment to the minors, unless that was written into his contract.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Mar 30, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe he had some kind of escape clause in the contract

Something like, if he’s not on the big league team, then he can ask to be released during the first week of the season.

by BK on Mar 30, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

That explains it, then

Not an uncommon clause for veterans of his standing.

Brad Wilkerson bailed out from the Red Sox yesterday using such a clause.

Nick Green had a clause like that last year, but didn’t use it. He ended up playing on the Yankee triple-A team the whole year.

Then there’s Carlos Pena. He opted out from the Yankees Triple-A team in 2006, using a clause that allowed him to do that if they didn’t call him up by a specific date. The rest is history…

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Mar 30, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah i think most veterans get it written into their invite

like Mercker had the right to refuse a demotion last season, and said he would only play if he made the team out of spring training.

Jones

I think he only has a minor league contract so options aren’t applicable. I would actually give Hopper some PT at Louisville, even though usually it should be saved for the prospects. Hopper is still .316/.367/.371/.738 lifetime with a good walk/k ratio. He needs some regular time to get on track and can replace McDonald if he doesn’t pan out.

Cheers to fourrunhomer for being the first to post this glorious news

Now down to 33 players

So who are the final eight cuts? My guess, barring a trade:

Wilkin Castillo, Nix, McDonald, Janish, Rosales, Roenicke and Viola.

Final cut: Homer Bailey. Since Mass-suck is out of options, they’ll keep him on the team.

by cesarhernandez on Mar 30, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Five outfielders are...

Bruce, Taveras, Dickerson, Gomes, Hairston.

After Bruce and Taveras, it’s hard to tell whom I would consider the “fifth” outfielder, since in my mind the other three are not starting OFs. (That being said, I am far from thrilled that Taveras is a starting OF.)

And Adam Dunn's spirit, ranging for revenge / With Ate by his side come hot from hell, / Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice / Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war...

by Paul Householder on Mar 30, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

If you count Hairston as an OF,

Then you need an extra infielder, because the only backup is Keppinger.

So if those are the 5 OF, then Rosales or Janish makes the team in addition to Kepp. It seems more likely that it’s either Kepp or Rosales/Janish, and Nix or McDonald becomes the 5th OF with Hairston considered an IF/OF

by nycredsfan on Mar 30, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I think this would leave us with 13 pitchers

I don’t think there’s any reason to keep that many right now. Your roster would be:
Pitchers
——————-
Harang
Arroyo
Volquez
Owings
Cueto

CoCo
Burton
Weathers
Rhodes
Lincoln
Bray
Masset
Herrera

Hitters
—————-
Hernandez
Hanigan

Votto
Phillips
Gonzalez
Keppinger
Hairston
Encarnacion

Dickerson
Gomes
Taveras
Bruce

I think either Bray or Herrera aren’t there (unfortunately, I think you are right that Masset gets a spot) and one of Nix/McDonald/Rosales/Janish gets a spot, with Rosales being my favorite to win it right now.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Mar 30, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Not sure it matters at this point who that last spot goes to

Assuming Kepp isn’t traded and is on the roster, whoever doesn’t make it will be waiting in AAA. It’s not a bad thing to have some depth for those last roster spots so when something inevitably happens there’s a real player ready to come up instead of Ray Olmedo or Manos de Oro

by nycredsfan on Mar 30, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't really mind if Masset gets a spot.

he is an okay long reliever, and I would rather see Bailey get regular work in Louisville than mop up in Cincinnati. My biggest concern is how Bailey would handle a demotion. Will his new mature attitude continue?

I would agree with you

but the Reds haven’t stretched out Viola. If they stretched him out so he could give 2-4 innings in relief when needed I would agree. They don’t really have a guy down there who can come in during the 2nd or 3rd inning and get to the 6th or 7th.

Yes, but

Don’t many teams go with 13 pitchers early in the year? If there’s an injury, they’ll have to make a roster move, but again that’s something everyone deals with.

I also don’t think it’s quite as big of a problem since Hairston will play everywhere, and only EdE or Gomes will need to be pulled for defensive purposes.

by BubbaFan on Mar 30, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

nah, I think most actually go with 11

there’s usually a 2 week break or so before you really need a 5th starter, so teams can be more flexible.

by Cy Schourek on Mar 30, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

not the Reds

they’ll be using a 5th starter in the first week. They have the day after OD off, then 8 straight days of games. Then an off-day and then 13 straight days of games. Seems like the fewest off days they’ve had to start the season in a while. Kinda nice, actually.

Plus, Baker is leaning toward 12 pitchers:

MANAGER DUSTY BAKER tipped his hand a bit Sunday by saying, "We still have to get (closer) Francisco Cordero together a little bit and find out who our long man is, but we’re leaning toward keeping 12 pitchers early in the season."

That Viola is still around is very interesting

Particularly in light of Dusty’s comments that they are “viewing him as a reliever now”. Perhaps he sticks. He could chew up quality innings at the back of the pen himself, in a psuedo long – relief role.

Affeldt

Viola does look more like an Affeldt replacement than anyone else but I’m pulling for Herrera. Viola in AAA (where he hasn’t yet pitched). We have a promising bullpen if the vets hold up.

What's great about this discussion

is that we can even have the discussion. It’s great that no matter who makes the club, there will be at least 3 or 4 solid young arms in AAA ready to go should anyone suck or get hurt.

Spring OPS - Remaining Hitters

Spring OPS

1.068 Hanigan (so consistent)
.917 Gomes
.878 McDonald
.861 Bruce (big April ahead)
.838 Votto
.834 Dickerson
.773 BP (no hr’s)
.743 Nix (kinda tailed off)
.734 Janish
.701 Taveras (attitude on track .395 obp)
.690 Hernandez (few ab’s)
.635 Rosales
.599 EdE
.583 Gonzalez
.563 Hairston (few ab’s)
.543 Castillo
.306 Keppinger (sample size getting alarming too)

Cubs have 8 guys over .900, 4 more over .800, and D.Lee is not one of them. Milton Bradley is at a handsome 1.435. My point is that some of the Reds’ numbers would be good in the regular season but aren’t as impressive in the spring. I’d really like to see Dickerson at the .800 mark or better, Taveras at .700 or better, and McDonald at .725 or better during the season.

by Matt McWax on Mar 30, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

Me, too
I’d really like to see… Taveras at .700 or better

Considering he’s been over .671 for a season once in his career, I’m not counting on it.

Are we really sure that Francisco Cordero is healthy? With the way he’s pitched this spring, I’ll bet ya he’s really hurt (beyond just the ankle thing) and he’ll land on the DL sometime in the next month or two.

Then Rosales is the next scrappiest – good scrappy ABs from this kid.
