Spring Game 29 Thread: Rays at Reds
Just three more games in Sarasota for the Reds, including this one. It's the last time this season they'll face the Rays and it's a rubber match of sorts as the teams are an eeven 2-2 against each other this Spring.
Pitching for the Reds today is Bronson Arroyo, who I believe is throwing to Ramon Hernandez under game conditions for only the second time this Spring and the first time in over a month. It'll be interesting to see how they click, though I don't expect Arroyo to perform all that well. It sounds like he's still trying to wear his arm down so that it's not tired during the season.
The Reds will face Scott Kazmir, a pitcher that Jim Bowden and crew passed up on for Chris Gruler in the 2002 draft. Of course they also passed up on Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, Jeremy Hermida, Kahlil Greene, Cole Hamels, James Loney, Jeremy Guthrie, Jeff Francouer, Joe Blanton, and Matt Cain, all of whom were taken in the first round of that draft. But, they did get Joey Votto in round 2, but only after taking Mark Schramek with a supplementray pick. Don't worry, I won't mention that Brian McCann, Jon Lester, Jonathan Broxton, and Jesse Crain were all taken in the 2nd round as well. There was a ton of talent in that draft and the Reds somehow managed to miss a lot of it despite having the 3rd pick in the draft. Any wonder as to why the Reds had such a dearth of home grown talent for so long?
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 1:05pm. The Reds are on the radio today, or you can check them out on Gameday.

Anyone else starting to worry about Edwin? You would think by now the Reds would know a shoulder injury if they saw it. At this point, I don’t see how Edwin doesn’t land on the DL for opening day.
I don't think mobile commenting is going to happen that quickly
they are changing their development process though and hoping to roll out changes much more frequently. Hopefully mobile commenting will be a priority soon.

yeah, it's starting to get beyond being cautious
my guess is that Kepp starts at 3B on OD and EdE sits out the first week before going on the DL.

I still don't think Kepp has this team made
I tihnk you could see Janish AND Roasles on the club in some scenarios.

I don't see what scentario where that's possible
Unless Kepp gets traded, and either Gonzalez or Edwin (or both) go on the DL.

That's the word they use in baseball
It means a game being rained out.
If it’s raining, the players wander around the clubhouse asking each other, “Game banged?” Meaning, has it been canceled yet.

Fay also says Kent Mercker will be in the radio booth tomorrow and might win a part time gig during the regular season. Could be interesting. If it means less Brantley, then I’m all for it.
Then he has this to say: —Baker hinted that the Reds’ won’t let options affect the final roster. "We’ll try to let options affect it."

Fay said
that the Rays games have been attracting 7,000 fans. The second Red Sox game I attended got less than 6,000, so that’s a lot for a spring training game. He thinks they’ll try to avoid canceling the game for that reason.
(What happens if a game is rained out in spring training? They usually don’t make them up, so I guess they have to give back the money?)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i doubt they give back the money
they just give them a rain check for the final two games at ole ed smith.

Gruler
I thought Gruler was a great pick at the time. I remember Bench saying he had a better curve and changeup than Tom Seaver, who he was compared to due to build and 95+mph gas.
Its sad he didnt really get a shot due to injury. Then again the same thing happened to Marc Cornell (out of OU) a couple years ago.

From listening to the first few innings it would appear that

Arroyo and Hernandez aren't on the same page
if only someone could have predicted that.
"I’m trying to get dialed in with Ramon, which is nearly impossible after only seeing me six innings in whole life," Arroyo said.
Arroyo admits that he’s difficult to catch because he works backward when compared to most pitchers, i.e., his breaking stuff sets up his fastball.
"When someone’s on the same page as you, they know what you want to do," Arroyo said. "For instance, anybody can call a inside fastball. But he doesn’t know if you want to paint it in or open with a cutter. All those little variables. You need someone pulling on the same rope as you.
"Until he sees enough pitches, it’s almost like throwing to a stationary target."

Why not use someone who doesn't suck who's already on the team?
He’s pitched to Hanigan twice through ST so far (and Ramon one other time, and Tatum twice, fwiw). Assuming Hanigan will probably get one start every 5 days, why not pair him up with Arroyo so he can stop bitching about Ramon? And if Arroyo knew he was difficult to catch, why hasn’t he been working with the same catcher all throughout ST to get acclimated? Isn’t that the purpose of Spring Training? Is nobody else on the Reds asking these kind of questions right now after reading that?

The whole gist of Arroyo's bitching
is that the new starting catcher went to the WBC and he couldn’t work with him. He is not unique enough to warrant a personal catcher. Apart from forbidding Hernandez to participate in the WBC, I don’t see what the Reds could have done. I don’t think they are negligent or culpable here.

I don't like that "personal catcher" thing
You want to be able to put your best lineup in, no matter who’s pitching.
However, I agree Hernandez should have been working with Arroyo more in spring training. Hernandez has hardly played at all. Is he injured? Or do they just not want to wear him out?
Being a catcher new to the team, he really needs more time with the pitching staff, so he can establish a rapport.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

I'd forgotten that
if I ever knew it.
I guess that explains it. Venezuela hung in there for awhile, unlike, say, Canada.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
But Ramon should be catching Edinson and Cueto
May as well align his off days with Arroyo’s starts. Anyways, Hannigan and Hernandez are close enough offensively that you’re not really sacrificing your best lineup in starting one over the other.
RACIST!
i recall reading Edinson liked throwing to Hanigan and his catcher ERA is low and whatnot. Edinson at least is proficient in English. Why does it matter?

I disagree
I think that the amount of trust in that relationship can really change how a pitcher pitches. If there’s some bs between the two, and the catcher walks to the mound after a walk…yikes. That won’t end well.
If Hanigan and Arroyo get along, great. There are limits, of course — we don’t want Paul Bako back, but between the two of them, let the pitchers figure out who they like.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
I don't think there's necessarily any bs involved
It’s just a matter having the time to get to know each other.
And if Hernandez really is bad with pitchers, then it’s probably better to pair him with a veteran like Arroyo.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Or perhaps it's better to pair him with whomever reseults in the most effective battery in actual games.
I agree that there might not be any bs, but I don’t care if Bronson is comfy, or if he feels like bitchin’. Heck, I wonder if ge might pitch better while he’s battling against Ramon a bit re: pitch selection. He might not, cuz he can be a bit candid (read: candy ass complainer). But the proof is in the pudding. Let’s see if these two jokers adapt.
And honestly, if Bronson really cared that much about battery co-operation, why hasn’t he learned Spanish by now? I accept no excuse for middle infielders, pitchers, catchers, coaches, managers, agents or scouts to not be at least minimally bilingual at this point given the composition of pro ballplayers.

He has six points, six rebounds...

That has more to do with how good or bad he is.
I'm just saying that I'm not sure what calls he could be getting
given how mediocre his results were.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
Really?
A lot of no-calls on Hansborough, and a lot of quick whistles on Oklahoma. This really isn’t anything new, as it’s been the trend with him for a couple of years.
I'm not arguing that he's gotten quite a few calls...
but you picked just about the crappiest game to hold up as an example of that.
This one seemed pretty tightly called, with lots of light fouls on both sides. The UNC advantage was that they had multiple big guys to throw at OU, but all of them racked up fouls. They were just able to rotate them through more than Oklahoma could.
We want to build long period of time. I didn’t come here for the shot run.
