Three Reds cut
Lots of fun Reds news coming out of Washington. Here's the breakdown:
1. Wily Mo Pena was placed on waivers. He's guaranteed $2 million this year, so that's the price for any team wishing to add his services.
2. The Nationals sent Corey Patterson down to minor league camp. See how easy that is?
3. Washington also assigned Javier Valentin to the minor leagues, but he refused the assignment and became a free agent.
There's the possibility for the Reds to bring back Pena and Valentin, although I doubt they would take a flier on either, considering the logjam for mediocre talent in the outfield and the signing of Hernandez. Still, More Reds news coming out of Washington than from Cincinnati.

How did Pena do in ST?
I assume he was lighting it up given that they placed him on waivers, but was he Jacque-level?

8 for 29, 1 XBH, 1 RBI
Harang probably could have done better

I guess that's why Valentin is hanging around the Reds today
But this I don’t get:
In a bizarre scene this morning in the clubhouse, Pena received the news, quickly made the rounds in the clubhouse, shaking hands, leaving behind a full locker, and departed without comment. “I’m not talking,” Pena said.
Why is that a bizarre scene? Isn’t that the usual scene when a player is sent down/DFA’d? Unless they throw a fit and overturn a few lockers, punch the wall, or leave in a huff without saying goodbye.

My only guess..
Aren’t players usually told at the end of the day so that their walk of shame is more easily camouflaged?

Not that I ever heard
The timing is usually based on roster issues, at least during the regular season. If they need the roster spot, the move has to be made before the game.
During spring training, I’ve heard the cuts usually come before the weekly checks are given out (to save money).
In any case, it’s usual for players to say goodbye to their teammates before leaving.

i take from that
that maybe it was bizarre that he left without clearing his locker or talking to the media

That's how Bubba left
He was too upset to talk to the media after being cut from the Yankees, even though he knew it was coming.
And when he was cut from the Reds, he left Saturday afternoon without clearing out his locker, then went back early Sunday morning to get his stuff.
Brian Bruney was also too upset to talk to the media before he left last year (and he was only being optioned down to the minors).
Then there was Kelly Stinnett, who refused a minor league assignment and said he’d rather sit at home watching TV and playing with his kids than play in the minors. Since he’d get paid the same either way.

Three Reds to be released:
Jacque Jones, Lance Nix and yes (tears up a little) Johnny Gomez. These guys were consistently over matched both at the plate and in the field. Meanwhile Stubbs was wandering around the dugout.

I like Gomes
but after watching his performance in in Fla. – he was consistently overmatched in all 3 games.

Do you remember if you saw him facing RHP or LHP?
Because he is almost worthless when facing right-handed pitching.

not sure what games he went to
but as far as I can tell, the only lefty he faced while Mads was away was CC Sabathia. I read somewhere that he’s pretty good. Gomes also only had 5 total plate appearances while our guy was down there, so uh, small sample and all that.

I'll review my notes and get back to you on Gomes
But his swing was so constricted and choppy,,I never saw him get good extension and I’ll check and see who he was up against. And yes CC is damn good but if Johnny is going to help us he’s gonna have to be able to challenge guys at Sabathia’s level.

I think they're hoping to stash him in Louisville in case of emergency
Jonny Gomes will probably make the team.

By the way.
I think Wily Taveras is trying to get all the walks out of his system in spring training.

Does any other team's fans have this sort of connection with ex-players?

Ex-Reds
This should be just the beginning now that Bowden is out. Kearns has got to be next to go.
by Brian B on Mar 29, 2009 12:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Kearns is actually having a pretty good Spring - .281/.410/.500
I know that means little for the regular season, but I doubt they’ll cut him, not with what he’s being paid.

Do you think he'll play at all?
I only said that because Bowden’s ex-Reds are getting the axe. But Austin’s facing a lot of competition.

I don't know
they still owe him $9M, I can’t see them eating that just because he was a Bowden guy. I would have to think they would try to trade one or two of their outfielders, and I’d guess that Kearns would probably be on top of the list because of his salary, but I’m not sure he’s got a ton of value at $8M this year. I’m guessing they could get more for Milledge or Willingham unless someone looks at Kearns’ spring numbers and his defensive ability and is willing to take on the salary if it doesn’t mean giving up too much.
Honestly, I’m amazed every time I look at the Nats roster at how many outfielders they have. What in the world was Bowden thinking?
