Spring Game 28 Thread: Reds at Rays
And so we start the last weekend in Florida. The Reds are 1-2 against the Rays this Spring and will be facing them both today and tomorrow. Edinson Volquez takes the mound for the Redlegs. As you probably know, he has yet to surrender a run during Grapefruit league play in 14 innings pitched. Stupid WBC screwed up his chance at a shutout for Spring.
The Reds take on Jason Hammel for I believe the second time this Spring. These two pitchers faced off on March 18th, and even though Volquez looked better than Hammel, the Rays got the win because Bill Bray surrendered 6 runs (1 earned) in the 5th inning and the Rays went on to win 7-3. Here's hoping for a better outcome today.
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 1:05pm. The Reds are on the radio today, or you can check them out on Gameday.

yes, which would still ruin his chance for a shutout
but he did give up an earned run in a scrimmage game against the Marlins for DR.

LLM
is available. So is Willy Mo. With Bowden gone, former Reds are going to come up with a new gig.
WMP
I have this completely irrational reluctance to give up on Wily Mo. Maybe it was his heroics on his own bobblehead night back in ‘05. I think he needs to find a team willing to play him full time in AAA, preferably an AL team, where he can try to figure his hitting out. Let’s hope Juan Francisco isn’t the second coming of Wily Mo.
i wish he would have went to a team with an outfield shortage
where he could have played full time.

Reds trail 1-0 after 5.
Voltron’s line (Assuming he’s done today):
5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K.
Take away 2 walks, and it’s a great outing.
Havoc’s line: 1 out of 3.
Bruce SB
Willy Mays Havoc-us: PO, CS.
Counter-intuitively, should we root for Willy to NOT be on the bases so he doesn’t run into outs?

Voltron's Grapefruit League ERA update: 0.47.
Didn’t Josias Manzanillo have a ST ERA of 0.00 in about 9 IP circa 2001? IIRC, some busher pen arm made the trip north based on some fantastic sample like that.

I dislike weather like this
because I never know waht time it is.
And opening day lineup, fwiw (minus Janish, obvs.)
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
another question:
anyone else here use Opera as their IP? I have to because I have some goofy thing wrong with my computer, and I think I’m having a lot of trouble here on RR because of it.

Hanigan
Hanigan homers.
Right or wrong, the Reds might have been persuaded to go north with Hanigan/Castillo had they not made the Hernandez move before spring training. Turner wouldn’t have gotten the at-bats that he got with the Orioles in camp but you have to admit the seeming necessity for a trade would’ve been diminished by Hanigan’s showing.
Hanigan had a walk, too
I’d like to see him get a shot.
And Janish went two for four, with a ground rule double.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Masset
Finishes off the Rays (backups by the time he was in). He’s not out of the picture for the bullpen with his lack of options and good showing in ’08. Hopefully some scouts were watching.
Quick question:
Which batter leads the REDS in Spring Training Ks?
Bonus:
What two REDS’ hitters with at least 30 ABs in Spring Training have more BBs than Ks?
Reds fan for 40 years!
I'm gonna guess Adam Dunn for the first one
