Spring Game 27 Thread: Reds at Yankees
And finally we've reached the point where we don't have to wonder if the Reds are on the radio anymore. For the rest of the season, it is true. The Reds are on the radio.
Tonight Aaron Harang keeps working out the kinks for spring. For those of you that are concerned with Harang's performance so far, I give you this link that 'nukkah dropped in my inbox yesterday. Seriously, read it. It will give you insight into what pitchers with rotation spots locked up are doing during the Spring. Plus, it makes me sound smart.
The Yankees should be worried about tonight's starter CC Sabathia though. He's 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA this Spring. I hope Yankee fans are stewing over that one unnecessarily.
See the lineups after the jump.
Game time is 7:15pm. The Reds are on the radio today, or you can check them out on Gameday.

Well, all I hope is that
good ole Jonsey doesn’t make the team. I actually am rooting for Keppinger to get moved to another team too and for the Reds to keep Rosales. But so far I have not received a call from Wayne for advice on roster moves.
Looked for a picture of Jonsey from the Alien movie, but decided it was too obscure and that I am too lazy.

good to see you back Verka
1. Agon should be back in a few days, or so he says. call me incredulous.
2. Dickerson/Gomes looks to be a formidable LF monster this season. i think they’ve all but sealed that deal.
3. Owings looks to have the 5th spot locked up, with Homer going to AAA.
4. Masset will be the long man in the pen, though some have questioned why it shouldnt be Homer. personally, i think Homer has too bright a future as a starter that i dont want him sitting in the pen pitching every 10 days or so. let the Masset hound clean up those scraps.
5. next question.
6. the only real surprise so far is that it looks increasingly likely that Bray will start in AAA and DR Herrera will be in the Bigs. im cool with it, as it looks like Bray has some shit to work out.

well I am studying it in grad school and it i find it very interesting.
My main focus though is religion and politics, and I am debating on my dissertation being about the role liberation theology has played in developing nations political theory. At least it is today, tomorrow it might be on the buoyancy of squirrels.
where ya schoolin'?
sounds like really interesting stuff. i dabbled in lib-theology a bit in grad school, but i did my dissertation on age-based discrimination and voting rights. i basically argued that old people shouldnt be allowed to vote.
My millions are unconventional!
by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 27, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Really, that is definately a counter-intuitive stand.
What was the rationale behind this, and what was your post grad studies in?
Oh and I am schoolin at Harvard Divinty School for now.
Thinking about moving though .
i studied social theory
the rationale was:
we want our voting franchise to be made up of rational people
we define “rational” people as those who act (and vote) in ways that are both for the good of the community and good for themselves.
it is difficult to measure rationality in a person, so we substitute age as a predictor of rationality. children often act in irrational ways, so we restrict children under the age of 18 from voting.
therefore we can restrict the voting franchise using age.
old people often vote in irrational ways, because often times what is best for them is not best for the community as a whole (here is where i list a number of examples of how old people vote for short-sighted initiatives that hinder future development).
therefore, we should restrict the voting age not only at 18, but also at 65. or 70. or 75 or whereever we feel comfortable setting that bar.

Fortunately I've already got one
But I’ll be doing the degree while teaching, so my head just might explode
Interesting. I think Jefferson would have been on your side.
The idea scares me a little, only because so many decisions that we assume are based on rationality, really never are. For example, if Thomas Kuhn is right, in science which is supposed to be the epoch of rational thought, theories are often adopted because of the novelty of the answers they provide or old paradigms are kept solely because of the aged researcher’s resistance to change. Yet almost all people regard scientific progress solely based on empirical data.
Yet I am appalled when I hear about the reasons why people vote the way they do. So I do appreciate what you are saying. It is fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I tend to be a Rawlsian myself.
i used some Rawls in my research
“Theory of Justice” informed a lot of my definition of rationality. i was also reading a lot of Peter Singer at the time.
and i should say that cutting out old people isnt my hard-and-fast conclusion. i also got a bit into weighting votes for peak-age workers (25-45) because they have the most at stake, in both the long and short terms. you could also weight votes based on family size, but then you start giving weird incentives for having kids. it was huge fun, and it was surprisingly easy work.

It does sound interesting.
It would be an interesting read for sure. If you ever want to share it, I would love to glean some information off of it.
It's funny,
But I think restricting geriatric voting is constitutional, but weighting votes would totally not be.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
Now now
There might be some merit to making some people’s votes only count, say, 3/5ths as much as other people’s votes.

Still a weird reference
Because in the 3/5 agreement, it isn’t as if slaves got to vote at ALL.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
haha nice.
I cringed when I saw that picture. She would definitely qualify as one of those irrational people. I think the French call them NUTSO!
I always saw that
As a reflection of the gradual way people achieve “personhood” in our society. Unborn children don’t have the same rights as those who are born. You don’t have the right to drive until you’re teenager. You can’t drink until you’re 21. You can’t be a senator until you’re 30, and you can’t be president until you’re 35.
We generally don’t take away rights once they are granted, though.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I think you have a point there.
There is a definite Enlightenment-tinged understanding of ‘personhood’ as an individual arriving at an age of reason or possessing rationality. I think that there are issues that would arise from this rationality requirement for full fledged citizenry. For example, what if someone suffers a traumatic brain injury that affects his/her emotions, would such a person loose the right to vote? Also qualifications for voting in general scare me. Wasn’t such reasoning how the courts kept African-Americans from voting due to the assertion they were 5/8 human?
things change
and since we are developing ways to make people’s bodies last longer (but aren’t quite up to doing it for their minds yet), we really should rethink the way we do certain things. for instance, allowing seniors to continue to drive when they are a danger to those around them.
the pics are great

Lots of NCAA watchers, I'm guessing
…but the quickie update:
Harang after 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB, 0 HR. Had to grind through the third after an error on a Cherry throw and a couple of jonesy “i’m new to 1st base” plays. Terrific catch by Darnell McDonald to begin the inning.
Through the 4th, Harang gave up a Nady double to set up 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Later in the inning, BP botches a double play ball to let in a run. Harang crosses up his new catcher, and the wild pitch lets in another run (oddly, this happens immediately AFTER a visit to the mound). By the end of the inning, per John Sterling, the Yanks score 3 runs on 1 “legit” hit.
